You look at some of those and tell me the kids wanted to dress up like that. It's for the parents and the parents' benefit. So they can win costume prizes and what not. Post their kids picture on their social media account showing how they are the 'best parents ever' and what not.

Some of them seem like the kids have a clear interest in the characters they are dressed as. Also, who cares if the big-headed parents enjoy it more - there's far worse things parents could be doing than enjoying dressing their children for Halloween.

No, like being the drunk Lady Gaga who vomits on Halloween night for ten solid minutes instead of being at home dressing their kids up! I have a lot of mum friends who palm their kids off to babysitters so they can go get wasted every weekend (not just Halloween). I'm always like :|

Point is; the show-off parents are hardly the root of all evil! It's just a bit of fun. Honestly, I look forward to it as a mother. My mum always made mine and my sister's costumes from scrap; she enjoyed it, we made requests, we all had fun and spent quality time together. That's the stuff I remember from childhood the most.

It's been a while since you were a kid right? Most kids love dressing up for Halloween and if the parents can put in the effort to make a decent costume for them then they really appreciate it. I have fond memories of costumes made by my mum. I imagine there are very few parents desperate to make a costume for their own benefit.

Most kids are happy with a store bought costume. The holiday is not about kids anymore, it's about adults and parents.

Store bought costumes are EXPENSIVE nowadays. I think it's a shame that people buy costumes now rather than parents making them.

But I agree with you that some of those costumes were clearly not the child's choice. Like Boy George. Does that kid even know who Boy George is?

Marie Antoinette? Dobby? Mouse Trap? Willy Wonka & Oompa Loompa? Leslie Knope & Ron Swanson? Calvin & Hobbes? Boiling Lobster? Duck Dynasty? Beetlejuice & Lydia?

I doubt any of them were screaming to be that. It was what the parents wanted. And you can't tell me that the time, effort and material it took to make the costumes would be less than it would be to go to the store and buy something to turn them into what they wanted to be.

I doubt any of them were screaming to be that. It was what the parents wanted. And you can't tell me that the time, effort and material it took to make the costumes would be less than it would be to go to the store and buy something to turn them into what they wanted to be.

But then a few of the kids like Dobby, Oompa Loompa and Boiling Lobster didn't seem to be at an age where they would express a preference either way and I hardly think their parents "fun" is going to traumatize them for life, so I don't see the harm. (As for Willy Wonka that kid was absollutely big enough to have seen one of those movies and liked the idea of that costume)

I just don't think that regardless of the, for a lack of a better word, "adult themes" presented in some of the costumes, it seems unlikely that the kids were coerced into it. Like they went "I want to be Elsa" and the parents went "NO, you fool! This is my holiday, MY HOLIDAY! And you shall wear what I decree!"

I mean maybe that happened... but to me at least it seems unlikely. Soon enough the kids will get to decide what they want to be but until them, probably, they're just enjoying the ride.

I hope not. That was the first thing I thought was I hope no parent let their kid watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Actually, that happens more than you would think. Especially in families with more than one kid. The same reason they have costume awards at the 'safe houses' that parents drop their kids off at for the night.

I don't think that it applies to this - the parents are just having fun with their kids. Which is disturbing is those children beauty pageants or that "dance moms" show; those parents do live vicariously through their kids.

There have recently been lots of children making videos on Youtube here, little stars of the Internet, and the parents when interviewed on TV always say that "while the child is having fun, it's OK. When she/he doesn't' want it anymore, it will be OK, too". Yeah, right.
