3D vs 2D Your Opinion

There seems to be to be a tidal wave of 3D movies being produced and released lately, and I was just wondering what my fellow Board members thought about the merits of the process as opposed to the more normal film process.

Personally, I feel that it is a process greatly overused. Most movies being made today really don't need and are in no way enhanced by the process. For something like "Avatar," the upcoming "Tron" sequel, and a few others, it certainly adds to the grandeur of the scenery, but for the most part, it's just a new toy that Hollywood wants to take out and play with at every opportunity.

Plus, and this is no small factor to me, the 3D glasses are very uncomfortable when stacked over my prescription glasses, constantly either pinching into the backs of my ears or sliding down my nose. Maybe if there were some sort of clip on lenses for those of us who wear glasses, I would enjoy it more, but until something like that comes along, I consistently leave the theater with a headache.

And as for the proposed 3D TV and disc players, I am most certainly NOT going to be at the head of the line waiting to buy one.

I agree with the for now.. though honestly.. you should gather the yungins and go see a 4D 'movie'
3D gives me a headache. I definitely do not want all TVs to become 3D while 2D ones go out of production. Bad sadly, I think that's what will happen. 🙁
 
personally, I think the 3-D looks really bad if it's not on iMax. Regular theaters aren't built for 3-D so it is awful. Plus, the glasses don't fit my face AND it gives me a headache. Also, it costs like 10 bucks more! It's ridiculous.
 
3D makes me sick, literally. And I know I'm not the only one. I'd really hate if this 3D stuff became even more mainstream...I'd have to avoid most of the big movies then!

I hate 3D I always have. I wear glasses and so its so annoying to put the glasses over mine they dont fit or break and its uncomfortable and gives me a headache. I would not want that at home.

Yeah, they really need to provide for those of us who need aid to see the film.
The only movie I specifically went to see in 3D, 'cause I was told it was utter cack if you didn't see it in 3D, was Avatar. And to be honest, I thought it wasn't really worth the money. I liked it just fine without the 3D, there was no need for me to shell out extra when I could have just paid the regular price and liked it just the same.

Plus, I wear glasses, so the 3D glasses don't sit right and they hurt my nose, so really, the whole thing is pretty pointless to me, and I'd rather just see whatever it is in 2D and save myself the headache that will no doubt ensue.
 
I did a speech on this in my speech class. I'm on the side of 2D.
Reasons 2D is better that 3D
1. Its cheaper
2. Those glasses give me headaches
3. The movies that are converted to 3D lose a lot of quality.
 
I dislike 3D because a) my eyes can't follow it correctly, and b) it forces directors and cinematographers to make creative decisions based on a gimmick rather than on the needs of the story or the work.

I don't go to see 3D movies anymore, and I hope it fades away like it did last time.
 
Give it time.. its just now on the brink of being viable technology. The upgrades they are making in the field will make a huge difference. You wont need glasses and it will be rather seamless. Just give it time and be patient. But I do think its here for the long term.
 
I truly don't get the hype for 3D. I'm all good with just the simple 2D because, to be honest, I don't think it's all that different. The only difference to me is that I have to take off my perscription glasses (which I do anyway when watching movies) and I get a huge headache when I have the 3D glasses on. I want 2D to forever stay with us but I doubt that's the case. Stupid new inventions.

I totally agree. Every movie I've seen in 3D gave me a blistering migraine, so I prefer 2D. If the movie is a truly good movie, having it in 3D is not going to enhance the movie THAT much, IMO. If a movie's REALLY good, you'll get sucked in and it won't matter if it's 2D or 3D.
 
Making movies 3D is extremely gimmicky in my opinion. It's also mostly for people who really appreciate special effects, movies like Avatar, Transformers, etc. that really aren't good unless you have really good CGI. I don't really watch many movies like that so I've seen very few movies in 3D, but the ones I have seen bothered my eyes.
 
I was talking to my dad and we came up with a great analogy. 3D is like Apple. People think it's cool and hip but really, it sucks. =]

Since starting this thread, I did some searching, just out of curiosity, and apparently there are clip-on 3D glasses available for prescription glasses wearers (They're available for sale at Amazon)

Now if we could just convince the theatre owners to have some available, we could at least avoid some of the inconvenience and headaches associated with these movies.

I still think that 3D is a waste of time, though. And for those who say, "Give it time, they're still just getting started," I saw 3D movies over 40 years ago, and they haven't improved a bit from then until now. Maybe the new process is simpler or easier to project, or some such, but the end product underwhelmed me then, and it still does today.
 
They're going to have to come up with a glasses-free version of 3D soon if they want it to survive. People are starting to lose patience with it, I think.

Agreed.


3D to me is greatly overrated. It gives me a headache and mostly annoys me, for most movies I don't even see a point of it and some movies just seem to throw in unecessary sequences for the hell of it just cause it'd look cool in 3D.

So nope, I avoid it in the theatres and should a 3D TV or disc-player be released I would only scoff in its general direction. Not for me. Both it and blue-ray (not to mention HDTV) can pack it in and say goodnight as far as I'm concerned.
