That line always stood out to me. Wasn't Buffy slaying demons for 2 years in Sunnydale thus far? 1997-1999. Or for 3 years as a whole? 1996-1999. 4 years would mean that she was chosen at age 14. Do you think it was a mistake by the writers? Or is there something I don't know.
 
I think she's talking school years - that's how you think when you're that age. She had one year at Hemery, where she was called at least before the end of it. Then she's had three at Sunnydale High. It might not be four actual years, but school years can be confusing like that.

Yeah, I keep forgetting that she started slaying in LA, that had me confused for a second too 😛
