so Friday night I got a call from my mate Rich in Birmingham and he tells me that him and my friend Matt [who was up there visiting him] are wanting to enter the 48 hour film challenge that was happening in the midlands the next morning and could I get to Exeter by midnight for matt to pick me up.
So after a bit of a delay, we get to Birmingham at 5am
Get up at half 8 and try and find an hour of town shopping complex called Merry Hill, where the cinema we have to get to is. We get our assignment.
We had 48 hours to make a five minute film called 'Flat Battery' featuring the line "is that the best you can do"
It seemed pretty obvious that the plot should resolve around the van we'd been travelling in and we decided to rein act a previous filming adventure from the spring where the van had broken down leaving us stranded by the motorway for hours.
now seeing as "we went to pick someone up then broke down" wasn't really a pitch to bring in the masses I decided it needed to be a bit more exciting and used it as an excuse to be more self referencing then we usually get away with [well it is autobiographical...]
So rather than just having to go and pick up Richard we changed it to having him go Rogue. [Effects artists do it all the time, honest!] And defected to our mates over at Guksack productions [www.guksack.com]
Shooting was called off on the first day after the interior and van shots had been completed due to rain. We had no choice but to hide indoors and make an early start to the editing.
On Sunday the real Richard [who was playing Mr. Gray] was unavailable so we had to write his character out of the story. However he did leave us with talented camera minion and all round nice bloke Mark Danks to help us out.
we shot all the road side sections in front of some greenery outside Rich and Marks house before moving to a near by duel carriageway to get some footage of driving shots and of the van breaking down.
We managed to complete the edit by 2am and got the film in 46.5 hours after we given the challenge at half eight Monday morning.
