5.01 "Conviction" - Airdate 10/1/03

I definitely agree with the poster (can't recall who) that said it felt like breaking in a pair of shoes, well said, i feel the same way. The villain of the piece was a little generic. Loved Lorne watching the case. Loved Angel biting the apple, loved Harmony. Though the end result was cool, the experiment that was done to Gunn looked like the venom scene in "Batman & Robin", which sucked. Noticed we got Angel in vamp face, I honestly can't recall the last time we saw that. I know Angelus used it a few times, but when was the last time our hero used it? Something that always bothered me: Angel using a rope. I know he went a great distance, but i'd rather have seen him hop and jump down a few building then come swinging in. Just minor stuff, overall a good show.

After a 3 month wait, this is what we got? From Joss? SERIOUSLY lacking in so many ways.

The teaser was funny, though the CGI effects looked lame (swinging in on the rope, etc.)

Eve. eh. She could take a hike. No big loss there. I'm sure we could drum up some other line of communication to the Senior Partners.

Angel and his new gadgets is just hilarious. The phone. The cars.

Wesley seems lost. Some residual pining for Fred, but don't see that going anywhere special. He needs to find something to do besides standing around with a mug in his hand.

Fred and Knox. Maybe. Probably not. Once she gets a good look at Spike, she won't be able to focus on anyone else. And did you notice how they're playing her up to be the BABE on the show now? Short skirts. Long legs. The way she was sitting while reviewing files in Angel's office?

It had to be an evil virus didn't it. Since 9/11, every show has had to do an evil virus. At least it's out of the writers system now.

Lorne - not enough to do. Need more Lorne. And PLEASE leave the Olson twins out.

Harmony? We had to bring back Harmony? Don't get me wrong, she's okay, but, Harmony?

Gunn becoming the law guy. Interesting move. I didn't see that one coming, but I liked it.

I knew we wouldn't see Spike until the last few minutes of tonight's show. And I knew he'd appear out of the amulet. Something about it just didn't seem right - almost like it was thrown in as an afterthought. At least he's here now. Hooray for us!

Overall, the beginning was great. The ending was good (could have been better). The rest of the episode. Well.

At least the previews of next weeks show look good.

Really Good!!!

Yay! Connor's gone.

Sniff, sniff... Cordy's gone.

Kicking my ass, for reading spoilers this summer. Never agan.

Even so, the arrival of Spike was still a rush.

We don't get the ep until tomorrow - so much for staying away until I've seen it! lol. I am just too excited and now I'm even more excited to see it! Yay for Angel. I miss Buffy but I'm glad that at least one of Joss's marvelous creations is still here. Don't know why but I thought Spike didn't show up until the second ep.

Sometimes I can't believe that there is this whole community out there united by a tv show! But it's great and I wanna say to all you great Angel fans - I'm stoked on spending another great season discussing eps and characters and everything Jossverse with you all!

Falcon

Great ep! and Did you see the way Pa Kent threw Clark out of the window?!!!!!Oh wait. Wrong show

Seriously, never thought I would soil myself just during the opening credits. Good riddance that the whiny insane brat and the good character that the writers messed up are gone, this is the cast that I want to see. And the ep just kept getting better and better, hopefully this will get the word of mouth that the show needs. Brilliant ep.

Eve and Harmony were both good additions. Eve might not be Lilah, but the actress did a very good job for the shoes she had to fill. I'm guessing that she will be a more subtle big bad throughout this season. And Harmony was hilarious thoughout.

Amy Acker was really hot in this episode, I guess they need someone to take the good hot chick role. Good for her, Nice to see the smart smart good looking girl take the forefront. Gunn was cool in this ep, but me thinks he will be going to the dark side soon. And it looks like Alexis Desof and Anyd Hallet are being put to the back burner for the time being. That really sucks because both are great actors. And David as usual did an awesome job, loved the whole Mercy speech.

And I Liked Spanky.

Did anyone else pick up on the two references to Angel being gay ??

First there was the remark to Spanky (after Angel knocked him across the room) - "I have no problem spanking men".

and the other with the Special Ops guy in the school after he said Angel was a 'small fairy' and Angel responded with "I'm not small".

What's Joss up to?

Remember "Carpe Noctem"? The guy that switched bodies with Angel also thought he was gay, but that's only 'cause Cordy told him to straiten things out with Fred.

I love "Conviction." Joss did a great job writing and directing this ep. I love how Angel tries to get a cup of coffee or some blood and he gets the hotline for sacrifices! Harmony is great. I didn't think I'd like her being so ditzy, but she's really funny. Great beginning to -- hopefullly -- a great new season.

Well I have to say I was quite pleased with this episode. Alot of the 'setting up' was done for the season, which is good because now we can really start to get into it! 🙂

Eve didn't do too much for me. Didn't dislike her though, I can't wait to see what develops there.

Agree Gunn looks like he's headed into some dark territory.

SPIKE! I didn't get to see any previews for the episode (we don't get previews here at all) so I didn't expect him until the last 60 seconds anyway, but YAY SPIKE'S BACK! 🙂

Harmony, good gawd I was not really happy about her being there but she had me in STITCHES! Her whole 'grieving' Cordelia speech..I just knew that was coming, because well hey, she IS a Vampire after all! 🙂

Lorne was good interviewing the employees..they're getting rid of the most evil ones! 🙂 But we DO need more Lorne and Wes!

Angel was a good bad a$$ fighter in this episode. Very raw. Loved it.

I can't wait for the next episode, and I can't wait until they start addressing some of the issues that took place in the last season of Buffy, which I think they will do soon now that Blondie-Bear is in the picture! 🙂

i dont know eh... it does sound kinda funny... but i think that the spaknig thing was just really a sarcastic/ironic remark that angel always does... kinda like,
"i kicked your ass didnt i?"
but in other words, yuh see what im getting at?

anyway for the fairy part, im not sure, but hearing angel say hes "not small" kinda makes me go rrrraaawww 😉 lol

but yeah, i LOVED this ep and i cant wait till the next one.... i wanna see spike and angel go at it again ^.^
im not sure im Eve pro... shes a b i t c ... you know..
and i loved how angel bit into the apple like "Im not scared o' you you lil tramp"
Gunn, YAY sexy lawyer guy... but im gunna miss his ghetto thug style 🙁, i always luved a ghettoliscious man.... but its cool
fred is fred, loved the poster LOL dixie chicks... Oh booooy!
and yes, we DO need more LORNE!!! i wuuuuuuuv him!!
And wes also... glad to see hes still wes..

as for angel..... oooo mama, this man is H.O.T when fighting and all, so i was glad to see my angel go at it again, (cant wait till next ep we'll actually see him in his BED!!!) anyway, yeah he could do with a hair cut, but hes still the sexiest man un-alive 😉
and spike!!! YAY!!! how WEIRD was it to see JM's name in the opening credits????? LOL but its cool! im lovin it! lovin harmony too, funny vamp-gal 😀

im just glad its FinallY back!

yay! cake for everybody!!!!::cakes::

I agree (just the rope thing). I thought it was like a Wolfram and Hart commercialn when he jumped buildings.

other then that the episode was fantastic. The fight seens and everything! then there was the 'chick bang' of the shotgun blowing off his head. that was great!

Eve.... shes cute but I'm not sure about her character.

'Blondy boo' ahaha that was great.

did anyone notice that Gunn (J augest) lost weight??? Also did you see Angels hair? that was weird. I;m used to the other look. Loved the part with the cars.

Then theres the 'I'm not small'. Nearly died laughing.

If anyone reading this and didn't see the episode. I feel so sorry for you.

just found this on another thread. 'The result of this is that they are having to come up with stories that can be told almost entirely in the W+H offices because they cannot afford to go anywhere else. David says a lot of effort is going into maintaing the classy look of the show despite the budget cut. They hope to so some Angel/Spike flashbacks to their history together but they might not be able to afford it, in which case the scenes will be of A + S chatting about old times in abar.'

This explains the CGI effects. Thought the spike reanimation thing was cool though

I just watched it on tape for a second time, and I noticed something else that's interesting about this season. There's new kinds of hidden stuff, or what I like to call rewind moments.

I guess you all noticed when they sequed from Gunn to a new scene there was a quick flash of the black panther.

That got me to thinking...Is there other stuff hidden in the seques? There is.

One of the more interesting one's is after the fight in the school when Angel causes SWAT guy to blow his own brains out. If you freeze frame right at the beginning of that seque and single frame through it, you'll notice Eve is at the scene viewing the blood smear on the school wall. Cool huh? Yeah I know, you saw that all along right? Yeah, whatever.

I'm going to go back and single frame through all the seques. Not right now though.

Until that time, as Harmony says, "Creatures of the night, unite."

The plot was okay, but the dialogue was great! Harmony was fantastic and the appearance of Spike was great. Loved Harm's line "Blondie bear?". I don't like Eve too much. Though Lorne was hilarious as usual, we're not seeing much of him or Wesley.

My hubby and I noticed the scene of the girl in the school hall looking at the blood smear. He said to me "Who was that??" I said "I have NO idea!" Now I can tell him! Thanks!

Didn't notice the panther at all though!

I miss Cordy!

Okay, I honestly didn't notice the other one, but I definitely noticed the Eve one. I thought I was mistaken at first because, I think, the next scene had Eve in it and I thought they were just flashing to that. I was so glad I'd actually caught something interesting for once!😛

OK this episode was not the greatest, not lovin' the new environment.

Eve is a loser, they need to kick her off or kill her, whatever

Has anyone heard anything about Cordy? I miss her and the show is really lacking her presence. Harmony will NOT make up for that.

On another note, can I get a spike/angel sandwich or something? hehehehe

this ep was not only one of the best premieres ever, but one of the best angel eps of all time!

it had tons of humor, new characters, fighting, what else is there?

i feel bad for sarah thompson a little (eve), she's got really big shoes to fill. and i admit i already wont give her a fair chance, because as soon as i saw her, all i could think was "lilah's replacement......".

gunn as super lawyer was kinda strange, but i'll go with it for now.

didnt notice any in this ep, but i actually noticed one in s4, when i watched one on tape like you did. i paused it to see cordy's face with her eyes almost bulging for a sec. then sure enough, two scenes later, there she was doing that shot. those are in the credits too.

in s4 before cordy's intro, it has a hot shot of her staring into the camera with her hands in her hair kinda 😉 , NICE. and since i'm forced to tape every ep, i'll definitely pay more attention to them.

I only caught the opening sequence of the episode (I taped the rest and should watch it tonight or tomorrow night). At first it started okay - you know, Angel swooping in to rescue the damsel in distress. But when the employees of W&H showed up, with Angel wearing that WTF expression on his face, it became priceless. Can't wait to see the rest of the episode.

I don't think that's a 9/11 thing. Joss likes to copy stuff from movies, so I'd say it's a 28 Days Later thing.

🙂

Eh, I wouldnt say 28 Days Later. That was more of a mindless zombie movie. This was just a virus that would kill all humans. They showed pictures of what it would do to the skin.

In any case, I loved the premiere. One of the greatest premieres ever. It was definitely hard to get used to the new set. But then I remembered how it was when they first moved into the hotel. Same effect. I thought, this is too big for them. But it eventually settled in. The characters interactions were awesome. The dialogue had to be the best yet. All the jokes they threw in there were grand.

I'm not the biggest Harmony fan, and was quite confused when she was being...nice. She doesn't have a soul...what gives? I did, however, enjoy her in this episode. I could stand keeping her around for the handful of episodes she's set to do.

Eve...ick. I wasn't looking at her as Lilah's replacement. I was just looking at her as the new female character. She didn't hit my fancy though. Nothing stands out about her appearance...and her character is kind of annoying. Perhaps it will just take a couple of episodes to get used to her. But as Angels new love interest...? No.

The special effects were pretty good, I thought. I did laugh at the 'swooping down from a rope' bit. Everything else was great, though. He should definitely put those other SWAT guys in timeout for what they did. Me and my friend did notice the panther spot between the scene with Gunn. Got me thinking of Gunn's future with the team. Spikes return was pretty awesome too. I was so confused at the package that he never opened up in the beginning. I kept thinking, "wait...go back to the package...what's with the package". Then, with the last couple mintues left, when Angel grabbed the envelope...I knew something was up. Wham! There was Spike. That was sweet.

One thing I didnt get. When Angel realized that the "bomb" was inside that kid...why did he flip out? He got all crazy about it. I think I may have missed something on that subject. Angel never knew the kid...

Overall, I was in love with the premiere. Can't wait to see Angel and Spike's date to W&H's client.
