5.02 "Just Rewards" - Airdate 10/8/03

Could anyone give a detailed description of what happened during the last 20 minutes? I kinda missed it...last I remember Spike was overhearing everyone talking about freeing him from his ghosty thing, I had a phone call so I saw the rest on mute but I was so confused!
 
After Spike overhears the gang, Angel goes to bed (his shirt off) and get under the covers and suddenly Spike appears and tells him how Hainsley made a deal with him and how he didn't agree to make the deal with him because he doesn't fight for evil anymore. Spike tells Angel that he wants the eternal rest rather than walk around feeling tortured forever. They arrive at the cemetary. Angel is about to smash the amulet on the gravestone when he suddenly hits himself on the head (Spike: "Uh, you missed."). The necromancer appears and Spike reveals that he did make the deal. Commercial break.

Hainsley brings Angel back to his mansion and begins to give a speech. Angel says that the Senior Partners will notice if the CEO is missing. Hainsley replies that Angel will still go to work the next day, walk, talk, and run W&H, only it won't really be Angel, but Spike in Angel's body. He adds that he's never put a demon concious body before, so he reckons this will be extremely painful. Spike taunts Angel and tells him about the things he'll do at W&H and "maybe have a go with that Fred." Hainsley begins the putting-a-ghost-into-a-vampire's-body process and sticks his hand into Angel's stomach, causing Angel great pain. Spike's ghost is being tranferred into Angel's body and it has to go through Hainsley. Spike takes control of Hainsley and Hainsley/Spike hits the table. Angel starts fighting him, finally chopping Hainsley's head off. Spike is visible again and tells Angel that Hainsley was already dead once he hit the table. Spike just wanted to get a few punches in.

Back at W&H, Angel tells the team about how Spike approached him with his plan to get Hainsley. Fred exits into her office, where Spike is waiting for her. Spike says that she can give him answers because she's "science girl". Fred argues that Wesley is better since he was trained to be a Watcher. Spike tells her that when he disappears, he feels like the ground under him is cracked and his legs are straddling both sides, holding on. He says he can feel that place wanting to pull him in and it's not the place where heroes go. Not by a long shot. It's the other one. Full of fire and torment. He asks her to help him.

Great episode! Spike got all the best lines, and I love the converstations between him and Angel. If the dialogue for the rest of the series stays upto this standard I'll be happy.

One quick question - Spike's non-corporeal, right? How the hell could he sit in Angel's chair?
 
i was wondering the same thing and i think he had his feet uo on the desk! hmmmmmmm
 
I guess that he's like the First. The First walks on the ground without having only its head poking out of the ground. It's all an illusion for ghosts, I think. I don't really want James Marsters standing around in every scene. It's painful to stand for 12-14 hours a day.
 
this episdoe was soo good!! I love all the Spike/Angel arguing! they're so funny. I loved when they went to the necromancers house and angels like "i'm from w&H" and spike goes "i'm his date" haha. Also when spike came to angel right before he went to bed and he was talking about how he can't live like this and all that stuff..i felt to bad for him. I really thought he had gone all evil again there and i was really mad, but i'm so glad he didn't!! I loved the last scene w/ spike and Fred, i don't think they should get together but it was just a cute scene. The only think i don't like is spike is stealing the show, every scene he's in he's gets all the attention, i hope its not like that the whole season....

Harmony is conflicted in her feelings towards Spike. She wants him to get closer, then she wants him to go away. That's just Harmony. Actually I've met women like that.

So far I'd say this season is unusually self-contained for a Whedon season. The points of reference from previous seasons are well explained in this one. I'd recommend this season as a jumping on point even if you've never seen an episode of Buffy or Angel.

Actually Spike doesn't tell Angel he wants to die. What tells him is he can't go on without a purpose.

It's a trick. It's kind of like the one at the end of Buffy S-6 where the writers led us to believe Spike was seeking the Demon in the cave to have his chip removed. Really he sought to have his soul instilled.

Interesting though, because by saying he seeks a purpose, what Spike is really saying is he wants to work with the good guys. Translation: He wants to work for Angel Inc.

You got me... Can you live with it though, because if you can't you're going to have to start asking questions like: If a vampire can't breath, how can it smoke and talk? If it's heart doesn't pump, how can it bleed? If it doesn't cast a reflection in a mirror, how can you take it's picture, and on, and on, and on...

Some stuff, you just have to accept. It's like... There's no sound in space. That's a scientific fact. Yet have you ever seen a space epic where you didn't hear the starships explode, or the energy beams blast?
 
It makes more sense now.

I guess that Harmony is Joss's metaphor for the hurt girlfriend. Spike ignored her throughout their relationship and now she's still hurt, but it's comical.

I loved the bit where Fred is "scanning" Spike and tells the AI gang about all the signals she gets including "brainwave activity".

Showing Angel's jealousy is hilarious and makes this season really fun to watch

My take on that, is that he can control it. He's not a ghost. He's in-between. Since he is bound to W&H, he can touch anything he needs to...he really has no choice. But then when it comes to anything else (interactions with people), he's nothing. I think for the most part, it's unexplainable as of now. Even Fred couldn't determine what was going on...he had the visuals of a ghost...but none of the scientific signs. Some things just don't need to be explained to make us happy. 🙂
 
i wonder about that stuff too, and i've learned to just kinda go with it. because if i worry about it too much, i wont be able to enjoy it. fore example: ghosts like him cant kick people, but it's never explained why they can stand up, as opposed to falling through the floor.

Well, i think it's about time that Joss start dealing with the "hell" issues. It represents a large amount of what people worry about. Sadly the show has to be inconsistent and non-universal to keep it interesting. I'm very glad that Spike is still a good guy. But the way they made Angel all jealous was a little off. He's supposed to be all quiet and broody and honourable. He should be happy that Spike gave Buffy something Angel couldn't.
 
Eh, I don't think Angel would be happy if anyone gave Buffy what he couldn't. He was in love with Buffy...and to hear that Spike had her, kinda ticks him off. What I don't get is why Spike wouldn't care about Angel dying. He was rooting for Hainsley's butler and when Hainsley was trying to kill Angel, Spike said, "go ahead". I would think, with Spikes soul, he would have the heart to stand behind Angel, despite their differences.
 
Wow - what a great episode. The dialogue was brilliant, the shots were great, everything was great!
I really appreciated how they showed the jealous side of Angel. I actually thought it really fit his character. The dialogue where he actually spilt his feelings about how he spent years trying to come to terms with his soul (how it nearly killed him) and Spike gets through in a few weeks. It really is true - before Angel was all the more special b/c he's the only vamp with a soul. Not only that but Angel cares for Buffy on a deep level - he's not gonna wanna talk about her and Spike. He's totally not gonna want to talk about how Spike saved the world. I thought it was really interesting. It really gonna make for an interesting season!

Man I'm just so loving this show...ok I always love this show. Who am I kidding!

Angel left Buffy for her to have what she deserves. I guess he wasn't happy about Spike because he thought Buffy deserved better than Spike. Angel and Spike have also hated eachother for centuries and suddenly he finds out Spike had been touching the one person he had loved most in his unnaturally long life. Not exactly a good incentive for Angel to give his blessing for Spuffy. But even though Riley was human and close to normal and good at heart, Angel was still jealous.

Spike was living up to his reputation as the insolent one. He believes that he hates Angel. In some way, I think that Spike wants to be like Angel, to be honourable and noble and just looked up to.

In the promos for 'Angel' last season, the WB called Cordelia "the love of Angel's life," yet the promo for "Unleashed" says that Angel loves or loved Buffy. What's up with that?

But hadn't Spike already discovered at W&H, when he tried to help Angel fight off his 3:00 appointment, that he was not able to do anything physical to help Angel?
He had to be smacky about it. He couldn't stand there and act all worried and concerned for Captain Forehead, now could he?
 
True, he wasn't able to do anything...but I guess it was just weird that he wouldn't want to at least show some sympathy or concern (which is what a soul definitely gives you). But apparantly, their difference, were too deep... I do have faith, though, that during the course of the season, they will shed their hate for each other, and get back to the roots of being buddies.
