IMO, music is one of the most important things in our lives. It can soothe us, it can anger us, it can make us cry, or it can inspire us to be our very best. Of course, it varies for certain people. Some people don't even need music. But for the ones that do, it can be completely life saving. So I want you guys to post your top five songs that define your life. What you listen to says a lot about you. What songs affected you the most, had the biggest impact on your life, and made you a better person? Those songs that feel like they were written just for you. List those songs here, and give a little information as to why.

Now listen, say what you want about Britney Spears now, but back in 1999, she was a force to be reckoned with. I was raised in the bubblegum pop craze back in those days, and along with her, N'sync, and the Backstreet Boys, they defined my childhood, and were my biggest idols. This was my first music video I've ever watched, first album I've ever bought, and it remains timeless. (And I still know all of the dance moves. So what? I'm not ashamed. 😛) Sure, my musical tastes have changed drastically since then, but you never forget your roots.

The first time I heard this song, I was going through a tough part of my life. My grandmother, who I lived with for my entire childhood, passed away, and I had no clue where I was going to live, or what I was going to do with my life. This song played immediately after we left the hospital, after she passed away. Me and my mom were in the back of a taxi cab, and we cried our guts out. I'll never forget this song.

After months of grieving, I went through a drastic change in my life. Things that I once loved, I had little interest in. I grew my hair out in order to change my appearance, and to change the way people saw me. I changed my whole demeanor. This song got my through some of my toughest moments, and reminded me that "I never want to feel....how I did that day."

During my teen years, I had done some pretty questionable things. Most of all, I took the people who cared for me and loved me for granted. Of course, they've forgiven me, but during that period, I felt very ashamed, and I didn't like who I've become. Every lyric in this song I can relate to, and it never fails to spark emotion inside me every time I hear it.

This song introduced me to one of my favorite bands, but more importantly, it introduced me to myself. I was discovering what I liked, who I liked, and what I wanted to do with my life. It was during this time that I met my former bandmates, and we then started a band that lasted for about 3 years. I was so happy to finally find my place in life. I was the lead singer, and we had fun every single moment of our rehearsals. After our first night of playing together, we went over a band member's house, in his backyard, and we got high, and we got drunk, and we blasted this song and sang it at the top of our lungs. I'll never forget that night.

Spice Girls was the first band I really liked. I remember being 10 years old sitting in my room and hearing this song on the radio and it was like something happened inside me that had never happened before. Me and my friends started a Spice Girls group and spent all the free time we had lipsyncing to the lyrics. It wasn't just that we thought that they were cool, or that we liked the songs. We loved them. Loved. They made me feel powerful and confident and like girls could stand up and take back all that boys had tried to convince them didn't belong to them. For a 10 year old girl that's big. And probably what made me become a feminist.

This is literally impossible. I'm not going to pick songs that feel like they were written just for me, I mean one or two might feel that way, coincidentally, but that isn't my goal here. I have these sort of...eras of music that define my life. This is hard to explain. I guess what I mean is, I got my first ipod when I was 13, and whenever I listen to it, the songs are in order of my life, chronologically. For instance Kate Nash makes me think of the 9th grade, classic rock = 10th grade, etc. Some of the songs go perfectly with how I was feeling at the time, but most of them just sum up what type of music I listened to that year. So I'm going to pick one song, from each of these eras. Ugh, can I cheat and list 6? Ugh. I hate that number so I won't. I'll just skip 8th grade 😉 Here we go:

9th grade - I was convinced that this was my absolute favorite song...it's not, but I heard it in a department store, towards the end of summer, before the 9th grade and I was obsessed with it at the time, nervous about school, so I took it as sign that I'd survive high school when I heard it.

So a lot of Nirvana, Cibo Matto, Pixies, Rush, Led Zeppelin. I just got into The Smiths but...I felt like this song really sums up...everything. And it's from Dollhouse, which I recently started/finished.

Music has always been in my life. Because my dad would play The Beatles,Bryan Adams, The Eagles, Bruce Springstein and Tom Petty.

But I think "The sign" By Ace of Base and "Who Will save your soul" By Jewel really started it all for me. I liked the pop music and I still do.lol. I remember my dad or someone taking me to the store and I found out about CD singles. This was definitely before we had iPods & stuff. it was just portable cd players and stereos. I also remember hearing "The Sign" a lot. I mis-understood the title. I thought sign=sun. lol. But I remember the song also being on the show "Full House". I also loved No Doubt

And then as my parents were separated, I was going through a lot. I didn't quite understand. At first, my dad tried make it clear that they were just separated, not divorced. It was hard time for me. I was about 12-13. My sister even younger than that. She was 5-6. I'd watch MTV and I remember specifically "Hole In My Soul" By Aerosmith and "Mmmbop" by hanson. That's when I just fell in love with the band. I didn't care that they had long blonde hair & looked like girls. People would make fun of hanson and I love them so fiercely that I felt like when they were making fun of Hanson, they were making fun of me. It may NOT seem possible but listening Hanson helped a lot. This is when I became even more private. Because it wasn't cool to like Hanson. Even now, I say "Yes, their still making music. Hanson still around and their more than just "Mmmbop" I get defensive because of my fierce love for this band. And while all the other girls in middle school & high school loved BSB & Nsync, I thought well, at least I like a real band who plays instruments and writes their own music. Also..look now? BSB & NSYNC is no more and hanson is still making music and coming out with CD's.

In middle school, I'd have hard time making friends. Once I got to my last year of middle school I kind of felt like it was hopeless. That music was there for me, so was the tv shows I watched. I had a friendship that went bad. I made mistakes that they were not willing to forgive. Then I ended up making a friend that didn't go to our school that I met through a confirmation party.So things were kind of looking up.



Then as I got a little bit older... maybe 15 or 16 years old, my music expanded a little bit more. I was just watching Much Music. This point I'd sometimes be angry or not even that, I just liked this band. I was like whoa... all female metal band. Mom & dad were obviously not completely happy that I liked this band because of their song titles. so I had to get a clean version of the cd. Parents were definitely divorced by now. And my dad was re-married so I had a stepmom and stepbrothers. Friendship in high school was even harder. The school was bigger, I tried making friends and everything. But I still struggled. That's when I started taking veterinary assistant class at a tech school half a day. I mean didn't help me make a lot more friends or anything. But I got to do something I'd actually enjoy.

When I was 18-20. My Music kind of mellowed. All these songs are more of this first song (first single) I heard that got me into the band/singer. Not exactly, which songs I related to the most by these bands. I found out about Tegan & Sara as I was watching One Tree Hill. Which had two Tegan & Sara songs in like one season. At this time, parents were pushing me to get a job which I was finding it very difficult to do since I didn't have a lot of experience. So my mom helped me get a data entry volunteer job at Make-A-Wish Foundation.

By the time, I was about 24 or so, I finally got my first job at the library. Which I was totally excited about and couldn't believe someone finally took a chance on me. Because I suck at job interviews. I'd been looking for a job for so long. Then a year or two later, mom started hassling me about driving. I was so nervous about it.I'd practice driving with my sister's car. Finally, a little over a year ago, I got my driver's license.

When I was 24 yr old or so , is when I discovered Paramore which I was like wow... It's like No Doubt:Next Generation.

These songs didn't all exactly DEFINE my life by at these points, in my life it's that first song by that band that I discovered. when I was around that age. It's hard find bands that I loved at that time that had a song that DEFINED my life at the time.

Okay, I'm not exactly a music buff or anything... but I do have a few favourites that means a lot to me and I'm afraid that this might be a long post.

I'll start with Green, Green Grass of Home. My first record I ever bought was some strange compilation album with country songs. But it was this song with Tom Jones that made me buy it.
As a kid I actually listen a lot to country music. Heavily influenced by my older sisters boyfriend. They used to take me along to lots of different shows with Swedish country artists. I really enjoyed those trips, it was exciting as a kid going to shows without any parents and stuff. 🙂 I will always be thankful that they let me tag along.
This country stuff didn't exactly made me the coolest kid in school though... but I never really cared about that anyway.

That boyfriend had quite an album collection actually, with all kind of music. Going through it made me discover Status Quo. My first real obsession.
I spent ages with those records, reading every word on them. Trying to find out everything I could. Sometimes I miss those days when you just couldn't go out on the internet and know everything in an instance. Just trying to find all the songs was a real challenge. Quo is still, like 25 years later, a huge favourite of mine.

Finding Status Quo made me realise that really great music needs great guitars. Which soon lead me to the greatest band of all time - AC/DC.
AC/DC also reminds me of some the best moments in my life. Spending time with my older brothers, having a few drinks, and listening to Powerage. The most amazing album ever.

Another song that will always be somewhat special to me is Black Sabbath's Changes.
It was a period in my life that pretty much sucked. Even though I personally didn't have much problems it seemed that lots of people around me had a very tough time and it kinda dragged me down too.
I spent many evenings listening to this song while feeling sorry for myself and all those close to me that had it rough. Even though this song reminds me of those times I still love it and listen to it all the time.

Finally, one of few newer bands that I discovered and fell in love with - The Donnas
This band actually changed my life a bit. I joined their official messageboard, become friends with lots of people on those boards. Even travelled to London and Amsterdam to meet up with some of them and catch a show and stuff.
That's extremely unusual things for me to do. I'm not the most outgoing guy in the world, to put it mildly, but this band got it out of me somehow. 🙂

Radiohead-Creep
This was one of the first songs I ever loved as a small child. I used to sing the explicit version loudly when my mum was stuck in traffic, which used to embarrass her quite a bit. I think she was a bit proud that her music taste had rubbed off on me at such a young age though, seeing as she brings it up quite a lot.

Sigur Ros- Ara Batur
This song encapsulates everything I love about music and reflects my two loves of choral/classical music and alternative music. As a chorister I used to sing about God every week and believe none of it, but I did it as the music we made was amazing. This song has so much emotion and purity and intense emotion in it that it doesn't matter what the lyrics are about, you gain a deeper understanding of what it's about. That's why I love choral music and that's why I love Sigur Ros.

Robots in Disguise- Turn it Up
This is one of the songs of my 'youth.' It represents a time when I wasn't bothered what other people thought and I had good friends around me and there was so much music out there to explore. Robots in Disguise was one of my first gigs and it was brilliant fun. It made me want to go to gigs more often, to date I think I've seen them about 8 or 9 times since I was 15.

The Smiths- How Soon is Now?

This isn't my favourite Smiths song, infact it's one of my least favourite. It was however, the first song of theirs I heard (first from an episode of Charmed and then from when I saw Morrissey perform it at Benicassim festival when I was 14). My dad made me go and see Morrissey at that festival as he thought I'd like him and I soon became rather obsessed. I still am actually and I know more about The Smiths than I do almost anything else. The Smiths were the soundtrack to the last couple of years of school where my depression had kicked in and it was becoming harder to get up and walk to school every day. They got me to the gates and then back home again at the end of the day and always put me in a great mood.

Elbow- Open Arms (Live at Glastonbury 2011)

I was going to put Frank Turner as my last one but this stands out to me more at the moment. This song represents my love of festivals and summertime. Glasto 2011 was my 4th Glasto and it had been 3 days of rain, mud and then blazing sun, making it more of an endurance test than a festival. But when I saw Elbow, none of that mattered. Their entire set was the epitome of the festival experience for me, they connected with the crowd so well that by the time they finished even the band themselves were in tears. Lippy Kids, following into Open Arms as the sun went down was just magical- it cemented my love of festivals and I know that I'll always go back to Glasto for as long as it's on. You don't get performances like that at gigs very often, but there's something about that festival moment that just makes you feel hugely content with life. I can't even watch it without tearing up now, lol. It also was kind of a wake up call to being an adult as the song's about being together as a group or family, made me notice that my priorities had shifted from being about friends to about family instead.

This song is an absolute masterpiece, and the entire album changed my life. It opened my eyes to so many new things. Okay, it's a song about the lead singer's 3 day sex and drug binge with his dead ex girlfriend and one of her friends, but if you really listen, it's about soooo much more, and the stories he tells are un-frickin-believable.

Yes, Led Zeppelin. And I'm always amazed and influenced by how they played. As a band they were really tight. They always knew what the other one was going to do, and I've always wanted to be in a band like that, and have spent most of my life up to this point, looking for that.

After Zeppelin I moved into looking at things lyrically and so . . . Bob Dylan. His words are pretty much where my soul lives.

I listened to him constantly and learned a lot about life. I was 16 listening to this stuff and reached conclusions that still hold true in my life today, 9 years later.

I was in this really crappy relationship with a really controlling guy and I heard this and was like . .. "Yeah! Love is like a Ball and Chain!" which prompted me to get out of that relationship. I don't still feel that way about love, but it was a big moment for me. To break free of that.

When I'm down and out I listen to all these people still, but lately I've been really leaning on Tori Amos. Sometimes she plays piano and I think that she actually knew what I've been trying to say, and said it beautifully, without the need for a voice. It's insane.

IMO, music is one of the most important things in our lives. It can soothe us, it can anger us, it can make us cry, or it can inspire us to be our very best. Of course, it varies for certain people. Some people don't even need music. But for the ones that do, it can be completely life saving.

This is why I LOVE music. It's hard for me to belive that some people don't need music in their lives! Even if they don't listen to music on a daily basis it's hard to live a life absent of music in this day and age!

This is me in my late teens, 8 of my family members passed away in around 2 years, and it was a very unpleasant time. It sounds awful, but it really was a comfort to know that I wasn't the only one who was upset and grieving, I would never wish suffering on anyone, but to know I wasn't completely alone, and that everyone on some level has felt awful, made me feel a lot better. I really hope that doesn't sound bad. I spent a lot of time lying on my bedroom floor listening to this.

This is me now. Happy and pretty crazy 🙂 I live a fast paced life, like this song. I'm a very, very happy person, and I think this represents this. I'm really happy in who I am, where I've come from, what's got me here and the people I associate with now. I've not always done the best for myself, but I do now (without, hopefully being very selfish).
I have a wonderful group of friends, I don't try to be anyone other than me, I love my boyfriend and love my family.

That songs really appeal to the teenager in me. Or when I feel lonely. Or like no one, or maybe a specific person, gets me. I recall being called a "witch" by my mom as a teen(in the nasty way) as a teen, because she was angry, and oh right, I was reading about nature religions, wicca and other stuff.

This one always reminds me of the lonely days in my room, recording mix tapes off the radio. After my parents' divorce, I lived with my dad who was very strict. He did his best to raise my sister and myself well, but as a preteen girl I needed someone to talk to about girl stuff and I didn't have that. In that time of my life, I was an emotional wreck. I struggled with my weight, my skin, and had a lot of issues with mean girls at school picking on me. I felt ugly, and absolutely useless; I didn't think anyone would ever find me attractive enough to want to date, which was hard when all the kids in my grade were starting to get into dating and stuff. I would come home from school, shut myself in my room and listen to songs like this one and imagine someone loved me enough to write love songs for me. (And yes, I'm aware now that this is beyond pathetic. LOL)

High School Years

This is a song that always makes me laugh at my actions back then...

As an adult who struggles with bipolar disorder, sometimes life gets really hard. I feel literally insane sometimes, with the way my mood fluctuates. My disorder makes it really hard for me to feel like I'm being a good parent and wife sometimes... I beat myself up over the times when I snap on my husband or kids, and I go through phases where I feel completely depressed, and others where I am too happy to be real. I sometimes think I've lost it, but this song reminds me that I'm not the only person in the world to feel this way.
