One more question: What if some of the girls and/or cats are missing legs? Are we counting prosthetics here?

I'm going to say 16 (assuming all girls and one bus driver have 2 legs each [8 X 2=16]), because you didn't say the cats and backpacks were on the bus with the girls.

yeah, 10th graders are 10-11 in the US too
When I was in 5th grade the age range was from 9-11 ....and that's Germany, where you usually start school when you're 6/7. Come on, don't tell me Americans are 12 in 5th grade? We even had some cases of 12-year-olds in 9th grade! (okay, those are the super smart, grade skipping kids, but still)
 
General ages for US
Pre-K: 4/5 years old
Kindergarten 5/6
1st Grade: 6/7
2nd: 7/8
3rd: 8/9
4th:9/10
5th: 10/11
6th:11/12
7th: 12/13
8th: 13/14
9th: 14/15
10th: 15/16
11th: 16/17
12th 17/18

It varies for each school district and their birthday cutoffs and whatnot, but that's pretty accurate. Sue me, I was a year off before! It's been awhile since I was actually in 5th grade, haha
 
How on Earth did I get 2758? Or 2760 with the bus driver... I appear to be way off.

Third time I did it I got the same answer as the first...
 
The basic math I have done leads me to a result of 10990 IF there is no trick to this.

There are 7 girls in a bus.
Each girl has 7 backpacks.
In each backpack, there are 7 big cats.
For every big cat there are 7 little cats.


Each individual bag contains 7x8 (56) cats
Times that by 4 for the number of legs in each bag
Times that number by 7x7 (49) bags
Plus 7x2(14) for the girls

But....but.....but.....that's uneccessary maths! Why on EARTH would anyone want to do that?!?
But was it an all girls school? if not you'd have to think there were some boys on the bus.
Also it is a trick question, because how many parts of the bus are called legs: as mentioned before the seats, parts of the suspension for instance.
If the question is a Maths question it's wrong, as, if the question deals with only numbers it is Arithmetic.
Mathematics involves calculus, sines - cosines, algebra etc:
 
To be honest, I wasn't exactly a queen in arithmetic (I almost failed my exam because I had to use my calculator for things like 12x7), but isn't this question just a matter of reading? as everyone else already said: (7 girls x2 legs) + (7 girls x7 rucksacks x7 big cats x4 legs) + (7 girls x7 rucksacks x7 big cats x7 small cats x4 legs) = 10990.

Ahh yes, but one of the girls is really a boy so that'd be 10,991 ???????
 
Nowdays math should be taugth a bit different. At least in Sweden. For a long time math was just about getting the answer the teacher wanted (what it said in the book). Now it´s supposed to be more like "As long as you can explain (logically) your answer it doesn´t matter if you get an answer no one else gets." Which in this example means you can include busdrivers, boys, two legged cats, legs on the seats or even skip the small cats as long as you think the right way with what ever you calculate and that you can explain your answer.

So you skipped the small cats or just counted one back pack/girl? Doesn´t matter as long as what you did had logic. Of course this isn´t enough in the long run (won´t work that well in the "real" world) but in the beginning it´s more important to get thinking than just knowing answers.

There are zero legs on the bus because buses have wheels! 😛

How many legs are IN the bus, not ON it.
There are 7 girls on the bus. Each girl has 2 legs. 7 x 2 = 14 legs. At no time does it say that the cats, kittens, or back packs are on the bus.
