5x06 - The Cautionary Tale Of Numero Cinco: Worst Episode of the season?

Yeah, it was pretty boring. I don't hate it, but I'll probably skip it the next time I do a re-watch. The ending was pretty cool though. Maybe I'll just re-watch the ending, ha.

Almost. I give that title to "Why We Fight". But it's second best... I mean worst.

I agree, it's easily one of the worst of this season - that said, it was amusing at points but not like Smile Time amusing. I generally skip it in my rewatch

It's Season 5 Angel, therefore it's AMAZING!!!!

If I didn't read the title, I'd think you people were talking about "Restless." 😛

I actually enjoyed this episode. Then again I am a big wrestling fan. I liked the attention to detail given to lucha libre (Mexican style pro wrestling). For example, the guy never taking off his mask - many lucha stars are actually buried in their masks. Then again, Joss never really half-asses anything so I'm sure whoever wrote this episode did some reading on lucha first.

That being said, I can see how people who don't have an interest in wrestling wouldn't like it, it is a pretty slow paced episode.

I've no interest in wrestling but thought the ep was ok. It's nice to see insights about the ep getting the style right from fans though! thanks
It's kind of a strange episode, no question, but I don't think it was "bad". To be honest I'm not sure if there are actually any episodes in Buffy or Angel that I didn't enjoy even a little bit (I'd have to mull that over for a while), but my big issue with this one echoes what you said: for the most part, it's just filler.

They were developing the story of Angel losing faith in the mission, and the entire purpose of this episode was just to further that. It's a similar deal to the episode a bit later, "Why we fight". Not bad, but there's just no real point to them other than one specific thing. And when you consider that the messages of both of those episodes (I liked "Why we fight" better") are pretty philosophical and abstract, well, that qualifies as a bit of filler in my books.

I thought it was ok, I'm not a wrestling fan or anything but I never realized it was such a hated episode.

This is bad. Like 'Teacher's Pet', 'Go Fish', 'Reptile Boy' level bad. To make it worse I love wrestling and I still thought it sucked.

Hey, I have a soft spot for Reptile Boy. ;) Besides the horrible snake thingy, I thought it was pretty good.

Go Fish and Repitle Boy were awesome, come on!
I'm on this season now and I read so many bad reviews for this episode and was about to skip it. I found it on so many worst episodes of Angel lists. I was curious to know what was so horrible about it and well, I don't understand what there was to hate. Yeah, it's a filler episode but Angel has a lot of those. At least in some way, it went along with Angel's feelings about being a champion and his loss of faith in the Shanshu prophecy. And hey, Mexican wrestling! About time they show some latinos on a show taking place in LA. I just don't get the hate.

If there was a worst episode so far in season 5, it has to be Life of the Party. That made me cringe like you wouldn't believe. It made me feel icky.

Worst of the season? Try one of the worst episodes in the entirety of Whedonverse history. It was absolutely beyond cringe worthy. At different times, I dance with two feelings about Angel season 5; "I love it!" or "I hate it." Just really depends on when you ask me/when I am watching. Not quite sure why I waiver so much. In any light, though, my feelings on this episode have never, and will never, change. It was absolutely unnecessary filler in a season which needed no unnecessary filler. There was plenty of material available for the writers to work with in order to give us a season oozing with substantial, plot-driven episodes. Instead we get this drivel. Wonderful.

I used to think so, but I'm doing an angel rewatch with my husband - it's his first time through the series, and he loved this episode. He really liked that it was all about brothers who worked together. And I noticed, this time, that it really emphasized angel's reluctance to be where he is... his heart isn't in it, thing....

so, now, I have a new appreciation for this ep.

I love seeing things through someone else's eyes, and having that change (for the better) my opinion of something.
