Episode: The Wish


This is a good episode to discuss because of everything that happens in it. It's got a lot!

Who would've ever thought that Buffy had made that much of a difference in Sunnydale?

And here's a question... the prophecy said that Buffy would face the Master and die. But then he tells her that she's the one who set's him free. If she hadn't come to him, he wouldn't be able to go above ground. So why is he above ground in the Wish? Did the prophecy change because Buffy never came to Sunnydale originally?
 
I just watched this one!

Here's what I think: the Master didn't plan to wait for Buffy to come down and let him out. Obviously. He was trying to get out in "The Harvest." I assume that, in the Wishverse, the Harvest worked and he got out that way. And, technically, the only part of the prophecy we heard was "The Master shall rise, and the Slayer shall die." And, hey, both of those happened!

Ive always noticed Buffy practically changed everyones lives.
Willow and Xander would have continued to be just a couple of nerds until Buffy came along. She gave them a purpose and made them cooler by being friends with them. In fact, imo everyone in the Buffyverses lifes would have been so much duller/worse if Buffy didnt come along. She wasnt just the Slayer, she was a mini messiah.
Oh yeah, the wish is top 5 buff episodes ever.:cheering:
 
I would like to add that not coming to Sunnydale had a huge impact on Buffy herself also.

This slayer looks, what I guess is a more typical slayer.
Harder, working alone, focusing on the slayage and not much else.
Wasn't one of the things that made Buffy so great as a slayer just the fact that she did has all these friends and that she took help from them?

Also, who was her Watcher?
Can't remember if they mention that in any way.

^ They didn't name him/her, but Giles talked to him/her on the phone. She apparently acted more like Faith in relation to her Watcher and never checked in with him/her. EVER.

yes, you're right. Giles called wanting Buffy to come and help.
Love that ep. How many times do you see a show pulling off the death of five regulars in the span of one mid-season episode? And one of those who die even is the realverse Cordy (it's sure a good thing that the undoing of the wish brought her back to life... would have missed her, even if the ep brought in Anya as a - at that time not yet planned - eventual "replacement" of Cordy).

Seeing Giles pull off a hopelessly outmatched Wishverse-Scoobysquad with Larry, Oz and Redshirt-girl (can't remember her name atm) was cool, too. Especially with Larry - gave a glimpse at his potential of a bigger role than he was ever to have (I guess they decided to axe him the moment Joss made up his mind that Will and not Xander should "go gay" in S4). And Oz's van being the mobile unit for this Scobbysquad? So cool.

I really wonder about Cordy's total lack of reaction when finding out Xan & Will are dead, however. That's weird.
 
This episode really makes you think. It's so right, though..Buffy has had a huge impact on Sunnydale. It seems natural that a Hellmouth without a Slayer = horrible, horrible place, and The Wish certainly confirms that.

I love the irony of the deaths: Willow and Xander kill Cordelia, Oz kills Willow, Buffy kills Xander (I believe? Might be wrong about that), Angel dies in front of Buffy and she shows no reaction/emotion (in fact, she just walks right through his dustiness without so much as blinking), and the Master kills Buffy...

I also love that starting from this episode, Anya's on board till the end. 🙂


Oh, and I agree about the Harvest...the Master didn't need Buffy's blood in order to escape during the Harvest. He just needed it during Prophecy Girl.
 
I love this episode. Xander and Willow as vampires. Thers something wrong but sexy about it.
I would have liked to have seen jesse's charcter back for this ep but i think the actor was busy during filming.
The Anyanka/Anya/Aud background is very fragmented and i feel never rely gets explained properly when certain things dont add up. We can leave this behind though for the simple fact that Anya as a character is hilarious!
Why is Cordelia wearing a blue cocktail dress to school?? lol

OK, I watched this episode yesterday and even though I'm too late for the discussion I have to agree that this is probably one of the top five episodes ever, I love it! Alternate Willow and Xander obviously, and the Anya intro, but also very much this lonelier and scarier Buffy with the gross facial scar... I have this thing for powerful girls in combat trousers, I think... shame on me!

The slow motion killing spree at the end is just so powerful.
 
This is an amazing episode, very Cordy-Anya centric and they are my favorites. It introduce one of the most evil/tourtuous creatures ever, Anyanka, and brought a really cool story into the mix. My only question was, where is Darla in all this? It would have been cool to see her teamed up with Spike and Dru, or Willow and Xander. Since Angel is all soul having.

BIG stretch of imagination - put perhaps Giles and his OzVan-Scoobies got lucky and manage to stake her?

Or, somewhat more likely, VampWillow didn't like her as competition for Daddy's Fave Girl and took her out. (Now THAT'S a vampiric catfight I would have loved to see!)

Most likely explanation, though? Writer slip-up and/or Julie Benz unavailable. 😉
 
Julie Benz was unavalible, I know that. But I wonder what happend to her story. My guess is that she was probably sick of Willow and all of the Masters new friends and peaced it.
 
Watched this episode last night. I don't think I liked it as much as some of you. I think because it was a lot less funny than a typical Buffy episode (and I understand it sort of had to be).

First thing I think when I see Buffy in this episode is, "Boy, she acts a lot like Faith." I think the lack of solid friendships she had with Xander and Willow are the reason... and also why Faith turned out like she did.

The ending fight scene was great. Buffy killing Xander without a second thought and Angel calling out to Buffy after he was steaked (you know he loved her even then) and she paid no attention were interesting/weird to watch.

And I kind of liked the end. It's interesting that Giles basically saves Sunnydale by crushing the necklace, but when the reality shifts back to normal, nobody, including himself, remembers it. Almost like it never happened.
 
I have one thought that keeps coming back: Where is Darla?

Other than that: Brilliant episode.
I enjoyed it so much. The whole concept was great, and I was completely in love with Vamp Willow and Xander. They were rockin'! Anyanka's voice was a bit weird though. Some of my favorite moments was when Cordy met Xander at night all alone, and she is like "Harmony said you were dead." And Xander just bobs his head a bit "Now why would she say something like that? let's think."
Also the Master: "I try to eat and she....looks at me" I was ROFL!
Vamp Willow was kinda Dru like to me. It seemed like Sprusilla had been replaced by a pair almost as insane and crazy. I'll only ship Xander and Willow now, if they are vampires! Cos man, Vamp Xander had some sexy aura going on!
Cordy dieing kinda got to me, it was so heart striking. I really felt bad. And Giles being inside the cage looking helplessly. Man I was crying!
Even the Angel Buffy scene kinda got me. A bit cheesy, but good. Angel all torn "I waited for you." Geez, seen before , but alright. At least he dusted 😛

Then the big figth came. Buffy had come, and she was going "Faithy" on it all. Also she had a scar like Fray 😀
All in all, wonderful episode
 
Argh... I cant really go into this now as I am trying to get my work on, but in the last screening of BBtv, Lyri, of all people, presented a puzzle I could not answer. In the Harvest, Luke was going to get his drink on with Cordy, but Buffy saved the day.

If Buffy never came to town, which was the premise of The Wish, then Cordy would have been drained by Luke, so she would have been decomposing in the Wish and not running around the high school looking for her car.

I have not yet been able to explain why she is not dead in this episode. Anyone have any ideas? How DID Cordy manage to survive Luke without the slayer?

It's a follow on acts that happended. Say that Buffy hadn't said to willow she should go for it, and seize the moment, then Willow wouldn't have been taken by he vampire (she would later die with Xander and go all bloodsucking fiend on everyone)
But then Jessie wouldn't have been bait, cos there was no slayer. Jessie was done for. A happy meal. Cordo would possibly have gone somewhere else before the Harvest began, cos Happy meal Jessie wasn't vamped, and holding her up, by some death dancing.
Cody walked out, and short time after that the Havest began, withouth Cordy and her possy
 
I thought that Perndog (see you are back!) but Cordy wouldnt let a dead geek keep her from going to the Bronze. She should be dead in the Wish.
 
^of course not. (But Jessie wan't a geek. He had aura! Sexy dead aura!)
But it's like the only way Cordy could have gotten out alive. By walking away from the party early. Or being in the toilet hiding..
And I guess....yay for me being upgraded to dog state again? woppee what a joyful day
