My apologies if this subject's been done to death. I did a search and couldn't see anything previous.

I was just musing about Angel and that pesky soul of his after rewatching some of Buffy Season Two.

Let me get some of this griping out the way. Don't you think the Gypsies should have said something about the whole "moment of perfect happiness" clause before? I mean, you would think that having lost one of their favourite children to the soulless Angelus, that they would be rather keen to not risk it happening again. To be fair, straightaway after the original spell was enacted, perhaps Angel was not in the best state of mind to read the "small print", but they had over a hundred friggin' years to catch up with him and explain what kind of eternal suffering they had in mind for him.

Not a great plan, really....and they lost another one of their women to prove the point.

Now as to the spell, given that every new age wannabe had an Orb of Thesula as a paperweight, it would be fair to say that the restoration of souls was not an uncommon procedure.
Yet the world was not overrun by ensouled vampires, which leads one to assume that that particular spell had an altogether different purpose. (Try and stay with me here....I haven't had a whole lot of sleep.....) So, if the spell's original use was for, oh let's just say healing, then there would be no reason to include the 'moment of perfect happiness' clause. I somehow get the impression that this was something that was added just for Angel (which again poses the question why not tell him about it?)

So, here's a question....when Willow re-ensouled Angel the first time, did she use the original, no secret catch version of the spell? It would make sense that she did, as Miss Calendar was going from the source material, which would have meant no clause. Imagine that, the clause now invalid, and nobody knows. Willow was too inexperienced at that time to know that, of course, and Angel had to leave Buffy....but you would think that someone, Giles maybe, would have asked the question and had a closer look at that all-important spell. Its not like they lost the spell, Willow had it bound into a book for chrissakes. This is a sitch that will never really be answered to anyone's satisfaction, but I thought this was worth a tiny discussion. Your thoughts, if you please.

I'd wager the version Willow did was the same as the gypsy version a hundred years earlier. She was way to inexperienced to go mucking around with the format of a major spell.

What Watcher Wes says makes sense, but the possibility that Willow might have mucked up the spell in some way would seem to offer them an opportunity to explain away the whole sex with Nina and Darla thing a little better.

On the questions involved with the perfect happiness clause. I was reading the message board part of Whedonesque, and they were discussing all that "perfect happiness" stuff pretty good. It was in one of the threads dealing with the new IDW comic by Jeff Mariotte. Apparently they're going to be going into the whole curse thing in the first issue of that comic, and according to Mariotte, Joss is going to in some way kind of endorse it.

I think the Nina and Darla thing was explained properly. He had sex with them and that's perfectly ok; he just can't make love, ergo he can't "have sex" with Buffy or Cordy.

I agree the first time Willow re-ensouled Angel she couldn't've known how to exclude that clause. However, the second time in AS4, I thought it was quite unrealistic that she kept it in tact.

Also, Old Master nr.-something, I don't think the gypsies cursed him the first time to "heal" him, hence the term curse; it was their punishment.

I never said it WAS a healing spell...I was merely using that as an example.
It's still kinda weird they didn't tell Angel about what would happen if he experienced "true happiness". Since the point must be to keep him miserable, not to turn him into Angelus again as soon as he's feeling good. So Angel should need to know how the spell works, otherwise it's not punishing him the "right way".

But I still think they could fix it. I mean, the curse worked a certain way, but there are other ways to get our soul back. Spike got his soul back and I'm pretty sure that one won't disappear if he experiences happiness. And I'm sure there are other ways as well. Wouldn't it be worth it for Angel to some how get his soul back permanent..? But yeah, I get why they didn't do that, it would be boring with an easy sollution like that.. (Ok, I haven't seen all Angel episodes so I can't say they didn't try.. Did they ever?)

Maybe they wouldn't him to know, maybe they wanted him to lose his soul again, they probably didnt expect it would affect him- they may have wanted him to have that moment of happiness and then have it taken away fro him just to p*** him off, maybe their is no way around the "one moment of true happiness" part of the spell, i mean we all know in the buffyverse every spell has pros and cons in order to keep balance, in this case angel has a soul but he can never be truely happy so there is balance... most of this isn't actually what i believe but i'm just trying to provide a different perspective

That kinda make sense too XR. I don't know really. I'm kinda all confused now. Very confusing.

But before with The Orb of Thesula the context was in a different language or code, whatever, but Jenny just found what it said so that means that no other vampire could of be ensouled by the Orb of Thesula before that. So how would they know the affects on Angel with the whole "perfect happiness".

And maybe with Darla and Nina, don't know who she is exactly, but if Angel still had the "perfect happiness thing" then maybe Nina and Darla didn't really make him happy at all. I'm not for sure on all this but I haven't seen all the Buffy and Angel season. I'm currently watching Season 2. Almost done with it.😀

Plus, not to get all raunchy or anything, but honestly how do we know that sex with anyone other than the slayer will create a moment of "pure happiness"? I mean she does have all those muscles and stuff 🙂

I mean, everytime with my boyfriend whom I love very much, doesn't equate to "pure happiness" on my end 😀
