I just wanted to compliment the folks who participate and operate this Board.

It's been a real pleasure to 'talk' to so many of you and share information/ideas. I've noticed the following in my ~3 months as a regular here at 'BuffyBytes'...

(1) The site is very open and polite to 'newbies'. I was welcomed my first day here, and have made many friends in the ensuing months.

(2) The Mgt of the various BuffyByte forums are also friendly people who facilitiate discussion... not the autocrats sometimes found on some other boards.

(3) The folks here uniformly display good manners and respect each others opinions. Let's face it... the anomymity of the Internet can really empower a loss of civility. Everyone here deserves credit for the tone of this board.


Anyone here feel the same way, or have a horror story about the worst fan-board experience they've ever had?

Firstly thank you for your compliment 🙂

The team work hard to provide a fun, friendly and safe environment for people to chat in. It is the main reasons we do it, as we all have lives outside of this.

Secondly here is where i'm going to go against what you said in your second point 😉

I'm not stopping this discussion, just asking that if you are going to share a story please be tactful, and not simply post a whole load of insults to other boards. Its not needed, you may get your point accross without that. Sometimes staff on other boards do their best to run it, but simply their members don't listen to them...trust me it happens!

As for me i've had only one bad experience, on a sort of View Askew board where the people were not that welcoming, and a bit offputting, you do one thing wrong like a typo or even delete a thread and they post about it.
 
yea, i remember posting at a view askew forum a couple years ago, but unfortunately the board seemed to be filled with/run by a bunch of bitter twelve-year-olds who hate anyone that hasn't posted "newbies suck" five thousand times.

after all, new people are not allowed to have an opinon on anything 🙄
 
hmmmmmmm nope never had a bad board.... they have all been polite and welcoming,..... so no bad experinces here although these boards are by far the most polite......

I don't have any real horror stories, although one reason I personally got into this was that any time I signed up for a board, I almost never went back because the members made you feel so out of place and out of the loop. That's why we try really hard to make it enjoyable for everyone...even though we sometimes get criticized for that.
 
No, but we are criticized for suggesting to people that they be respectful to other members, or to remember that we have young members.

I definitely know what you mean, there is nothing worse than going to a board, where as a newbie you feel totally isolated, and not able to particapte in the discussion because a *few* members have formed a tight clique, and seem to hijack every thread - there's been a couple of boards where I have found that to be the case, and I just don't post there anymore, beause I feel like I don't fit in, and it's like you are practically ignored, so I don't really see the point.

That's because we are the *rule* enforcers hon 'lol' But somebody has to do it. 😉 What's that old saying, you can't please all of the people all of the time - but we do try to make this a real friendly place to be, so you want to come back again and again! 😀

And as Buffy Summers and Faith have already said, it's really nice to hear such nice positive comments from our members, it's really appreciated 🙂 Thanks guys!!!

I recently realized just how good we have it here, when I encountered a particularly nasty discussion board (not BtVS or Angel-related) over the weekend.

I won't go into details... unless you PM me!

I'd never visited a fansite message board until I became a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I didn't even know they existed.

I discovered them one day while googling the term Buffy.

The first one I visited dropped my jaw to the floor. I couldn't believe what I saw there.

It seemed to be run by this woman of let's call them very strong opinions. No, Hell, let's be honest...the broad was Nazi.

She had her ideas of who and what Buffy was all about. Disagreeing was treated as an intolerable crime. Worse than that she had this little group of trained shnauzers that zipped through the threads like bots looking for something Momma at command might disagree with. When they found such a post they sat on it and siren-squealed like pod people until Herr moderator arrived. Sooner or later she always did.

I developed a little fantasy of what she looked like when she was called to an offending thread. I saw her as something like this giant leather clad Bull dykish creature with wads of cellulite folding over black leather S&M wear, possibly wearing one of those leather nazi caps. I saw her as arriving at the post like she was bursting through a door. "Vot! You dare to say Dawn is za goot vun and Villow is za bad vun. I strike you down vith a big red X. I kill zis post". The poster would be left cowering in the corner.

Plus the woman would be all the time bumming money off the poor kids who used her service. Her site was already covered with ads; links and popups. She was already getting money. I'm pretty sure the site also used double-click (more money). The frightening thing is each month the kids would cough up the money. They didn't dare refuse her. She had them completely whipped.

Anyways that was my first experience with a Buffy board. I never signed up. I became a lurker. I lurked at that board and every other buffy board I could find. I discovered the practise of censorship and recruiting board toadies to swarm and attack anything like a controversial statement was pretty wide spread on Buffy boards.

Then one day I discovered this board. People were posting controversial concepts, and debating them in reasonable, mannered order, yet no-one seemed to be standing behind them with a whip and a chair telling them how to do it. I had trouble accepting the concept of such a site. I'd never seen one before. Eventually I did grasp it though.

I registered here. It was the first time I ever registered at a fan site and to this day I'm glad I did.

Ye, I know what you mean. I call this forum my home because the people are real friendly, welcoming.
Someone mentioned a board with 12 yr olds saying "newbies suck."

I know what you mean, and I think that is so immature and un called for. They think that just because you have less then 10000000000000+ posts that your posts don't matter and you are not a good member. Post count doesn't count for anything its the CONTENT of the post that really counts.
And we were all newbies once, so they just say that because they feel insecure.

But Nah, this board and its mods and admins do a terrific job with the forums, and I commend you all, even the wonderful members who made me feel welcome when I joined last month.

And I know this is off topic... but new ANGEL on tonight!!! im so excited!!!
Anways, I agree, long live BuffyBytes!
 
I'm gonna jump on the bandwagon with the praise!!

I only used to post at the Bronze at the official Buffy site and when that went down I was gutted! I was half heartedly looking for new boards when I came across this one.

Im glad I did, as it feels like my new Buffy home now!
 
I'll join in on the praising as well. I have yet to find another forum as awesome as this one. I have met some fantasic people and I have so much fun having people to discuss buffy with, considering the only buffy fan friends i have go to college in different towns. I love BuffyBytes!!!!!

Well, I've gotten across bad boards, but I must admit, this was the only board I really sank my teeth in! Only bad posters, but they can be found everywhere!

but then again i think ive been one of those
you suck your a newbie at one stage, cause like i was a meanie for awhile (not here) i like all people here!!

i think this thread is just a really important thing because you guys do a fantastic job moderating and like keeping the peace and its about time you got some straight out praise for all your hard work!
so yes, thanks for making this place so welcoming and open
i love it here so much , this and fanbolt are my homepages lol thats how much i love it here!
