Hey guys. this quote popped up on the main page and it reminded me about this question i had a long time ago that i never got answered. stupid procrastination. Here's the quote.

Sooner or later, Glory will re-emerge and make Buffy pay for that mercy, and the world with her. Buffy even knows that and still, she couldn't take a human life. She's a hero, you see. She's not like us..." - Giles

Does anybody happen to know what Giles meant when he said "Buffys not like us?" Is the answer just a simple, she's not like regular humans? or is Giles talking about him being part of something else? Who is "us"?

I think it means she has to hold her herself up to a higher code of ethics. If someone were to attack you with a weapon with the intention to kill you, it would be perfectly understandable if you were able to kill them in self defense. But Buffy can't do that. She has to 'not kill', no exceptions, because if she did start killing humans, where does she draw the line? People attack her all the time, if she kills Glory now, will she do the same next time a guy attacks her with a knife? She has to stay on the straight and narrow, no matter what.

Yeah, I think Giles was referring to him an Ben, since they would both take an innocent life if they had to, while Buffy wouldn't have. Ben intended to kill Dawn to save himself, and Giles killed Ben, who was pretty much innocent, to do the same.

I think you are right on the money. I think that is what Giles meant!

Exactly my answer... That's how I always took that line to mean.

Must admit that I've always took it as Giles was talking about people in general when he say "us".
As in Buffy is a true hero that would never take the life of an innocent while most people isn't.

Now I can't understand why I've seen it like that... it makes much more sense that he is referring to himself and Ben.
It makes the scene even better actually, so thanks for this. 🙂
