A Hint about Willow Being Gay!

I don't know if anyone realized this, but in Episode 50 "Dopplegangland", After Vamp Willow and Regular Willow have their first encounter, Willow tells Buffy "I think she's kind of gay", and then Buffy says "Well Willow remember, a vampire does not represent who the person was as a human", and then Angel says "Actually...nevermind".

Looking back at this now, that was an obvious hint about Willow's future with her sexuality. I like how Joss hinted at it (The episode was afterall written by Joss), he must've known by then that he planned on exploring Willow's sexuality in the future.
 
Yeah, Joss has been known to plan things in advance 😀
 
There's another one I kind of wondered about.

You remember the Tara one, where she hid the demon-finding powder. Was that kind of a metaphoric foreshadowing of Willow and Tara's gay love?

You know, like it was this hint of something wrong with Tara, but in reality the demon (gay love as evil) didn't exist. It was just a deception used to enforce parental (societal) control.

Too bad Tara didn't hide the powder in the closet - then you'd know for sure it was metaphor.

Actually, I'd always thought that that particular moment was forshadowing the Season 5 episode, Family in which Tara revealed that she'd thought she was a demon.
 
Yeah I heard it was forshaddowing for "Family"

But Xander's sexuality was also question or whatever in Phases (with the Larry scene) and commenting on Angel's good looks. Joss stated he was going to make either Xander or Willow gay but wasn't sure. As Seth wanted to leave Willow was made gay apparently. Would of been interesting to see what would of happened if it were Xander instead. His was even hinted after Willow went gay, as he went on to compliment Riley and Spike's body.

Well, yeah. I'm conceding that. I'm just suggesting it might be possible to see the whole thing as a metaphor for the way gay love is perceived by society.

If that were the case you could also see it as a foreshadowing of the problems Willow and Tara would have getting others to accept the relationship, kind of a foreshadowing of the complexities of being gay, rather than a foreshadowing of simply being gay.
 
Yeah, nerd4hire, I get what you're saying. I never thought about it that way, but it makes perfect sense, even if it wasn't intended.

As for the original post, I giggle like a little girl whenever I see that scene. It just makes me all happy, for some reason.
 
The foreshadowing Joss thought up were just perfect, he certainly knew what he was doing, he did everything so perfectly by bringing stuff in so subtle and having them occur sometime in the future.
 
Here's something like support for my theory the writers and directors might use what I'll call metaphoric foreshadowing (although it has nothing to do with being gay).

In Afterlife (I believe), there's a scene where Buffy is walking through the cemetary. The camera kind of tracks then stops so that a statue of an angel stands directly behind Buffy. For an instant it looks like Buffy has angel wings. This was before we all discovered Buffy had been in heaven.
 
Great point about the angel wings n4h. I didn't really notice it before but I just rewatched that episode and you could be right. Good eye!
 
I never really caught that hint but I always find it cool when writers forshadow what is to happen later on in the series!
 
It's funny to look back at that line... but...

I'm increasingly inclined to believe that just like her Vamp counterpart, Willow was supposed to be Bi rather than your garden variety lesbian, at least until S7. First of all, there's the Xander and Oz thing, which I actually can buy as the "safe" loves of a confused young teen. But Hannigan herself seemed to reckon it person over gender, and Joss has made it clear that no character was 100% either way. (Xander was a little camp occasionally, as were Giles, and Spike, and Angel, and I know folks who would fight til their last tooth to argue that Season 4 could have been a kind of college years Xena if Buffy and Faith had remained on good terms) After the death of Tara (I think it was Noxon who said this, not sure) the decision was made that Willow's next significant other would be female, because it would suggest that Tara had been "a mistake" if Willow had a boyfriend. The problem is, lots of WillOz fans think that Kennedy proved the same thing about Oz... And I don't think it's unfair to say they seriously overcompensated by making Willow, in the words of boilsandblindingtorment.com, "the gayest gay gal in gaytown".

Ordinarily, I'd consider it mildly insulting to the intelligence of myself and my fellow fans that the shows' makers would think it beyond us to grasp the concept of a photogenic bisexual central character, but I just spent an evening trying to explain the plot of Bound to my flatmates.

"No, look, for the last time, they're both girls...."
 
Heck when you really look ito it the suggstyon of willow being gay was mentioed way back in season 1. When xander asked buffy to the spring fling he mentions that willow is'nt interested in Buffy that way, or is she is she's playing it pretty close to the chest.
 
I loved that line, but how far in advance had Joss decided? Because I heard that he was going to make either Willow OR Xander gay. (I'm glad he chose Willow.) So if he hadn't planned who yet, that may have just been a joke.
 
I think all the foreshadowing was brilliant as well... But really, anything before Season 4, and even most before Willow admitted to Buffy that she was dating Tara, wasn't planned... Joss admitted in an interview that he had no idea that he was going to go that route with the girls... I never did find out the exact time he was "planning" it, but everything from "doggelgangland" to "Hush" and even beyond, wasn't planned... They just fit so well, and its really odd that they do, but just thought I'd let everyone in on that info... It's actually said durning the Hush commentaries that he had no idea... 🙂
 
Maybe Joss didn't consciously plan it, but he is a genius and sometimes a genius brain works on it's own, without the owner (in this case Joss) really being aware of it. So my take on it that his subconscious was playing little tricks on him 😛
 
Lol yea I agree Fran.. And I mean, when I saw Hush the first time, it was just SO obvious Tara and Willow were gonna end up a couple.
But yeah, the stuff happening before Hush.. I mean, it's not like we haven't had "hints" about Xander being gay if we've had hints about Willow.. Just like, if you look at most of the characters.. That's just Joss' way to do things 😀 Seriously, I didn't think those stuff were planned.. still fun to find "hints" though, mhm..
