Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker really shined in this episode.

Wesley having to helplessly watch the love of his life die was heartbreaking. Just when it looked like he was finally going to be with Fred.

Then again, pain and misery is a STAPLE in Whedon's world.

It was great to see all the guys work together to save Fred.

Until Knox and Gunn's(albeit unknowing) parts in this tragic event was revealed.

This should make the rest of the season quite interesting.

Everytime I watch this episode I start crying, usually after about 5 mins.
Such a well made episode and Amy and Alexis were just amazing. This episode really showed their talents.
As sad as I was that they killed off Fred (as she is my favorite character of any TV show ever) I do think it was a good idea and Illyria was pretty damn cool.

Joss isn't afraid to kill off popular and/or loved characters. He's willing to take risks. That's why I like his work so much. But yes, Fred's death hit me like a truck. I never saw that coming. Poor Wes..
 
This episode makes me cry so much! it's just excecuted so amazingly by Amy and Alexis! I kinda wanted more from Spike cause they had a good friendship and when she died he was just mopey and "You did the right thing". I've only ever hated Giles once and this was the episode! why would he do that? he know's Willow can hold herself from Angel plus I thought it was so unlike him.
 
I love Fred, but I think killing her proved to be the right thing. The first half of season five is pretty slow and has some lousy episodes. Once we lost Fred and gained Illyria, the season really starts to work.

Wow. This one hit my buttons like "The Body" "The Gift" and "Grave". If someone could have seen me watch this ep, they would have thought my cat just died.

That said, this has probably my favorite Lorne moment:

(punches Eve in the face, knocking her down)
"Ooh. Oh, I'm sorry. That was a knuckle-buster. I'm Jake LaMotta over here. It's pathetic. Oh."
(leans in close to Eve)
"Here's the thing, Eve: You're going to sing for me, and I'm going to read you right now. And here's one more thing: Winifred Burkle once told me after a sinful amount of Chinese food, and in lieu of absolutely nothing, 'I think a lot of people would choose to be green. Your shade, if they had the choice.' If I hear one note"”one quarter-note"”that tells me you had any involvement, these two won't even have time to kill you."

"Oh, and anything by Diana Warren will also result in your death"”well, except 'Rhythm of the Night.'"

Wesley shooting the lawyer in the kneecap is a fantastic moment, too. It fits in so well with Wesley's evolution from dork Watcher to a top-tier badass . . . and not just a top-tier badass, but one waaaaay in love (probably for the first time).
 
It's a classic sign of Joss. People are happy, let's kill one + people. The more the merrier.

Joss is a closet serial killer.

I loved the episode.

Well, all the vamps are dead too. Just pointing that out. ;)
I didn't like this eps because it hurt me a lot. I wasn't happy with Fred dying and my favorite ship ending. However the eps was very well written and the acting was superb.

Totally, totally agree. You just said all my favorite parts of the ep. 🙂
Alexis and Amy were phenomenal in this episode. Oh my God... I don't know anyone who could watch that episode without crying. And for all of us Fresley lovers out here, it was especially heartwrenching 'cause just as we got what we wanted, it was ripped away again. I love this episode. It might be in my top 5 of "Angel" eps. 🙂

This is probably the saddest hour of television ever. This was just, heartbreaking.

I really wish they hadn't killed off Fred. She should have stayed.

And poor Wesley, he's so beautiful.

Amy and Alexis played this so brilliantly. They were just heartbreaking to watch. I could feel everything.

I can't believe I have never seen Season 5 before, I knew it was coming, and still... I cried the entire way through.

Yes Gunn indirectly caused what happened, but he did love her nonetheless. If he knew beforehand that she would've been affected by his deal, don't think Gunn would've agreed to it.

Fred and Anya are my favorite characters of any shows ever, so I think its cool Fred is yours too. And strangely, I too thought her dying wasn't necessarily a bad idea. I think my disappointment was that they did so little with Illyria after she got introduced. I was disappointed in the ending of season 5 in general though, so it wasn't really Illyria's fault.

But yes, this particular episode was amazing.
 
I suppose one of the reasons why I hated Freds death was that there were only 2 episodes between killing off Cordelia and killing off Fred. Two strong females who both get taken over by evil presences. It just seemed unfair that the audience's final memory of these two women was such a negative one. I think I would have preferred Fred to just be killed off in a way.

I actually think Cordy's last episode was more positive than the way they left her. It was a great episode and she was great in it. Like the Cordy of old.
Count me in as someone that felt like he was hit by a truck with Fred's death. "Wesley, why can't I stay..." is one of those lines that rips you up inside. It wasn't until I was sure they were going to keep Illyria around that I started becoming 'ok' with it. I would have love to have seen Illyria's arc. Not getting that is my biggest disappointment with the series ending.

Anyway, Angel and Spikes story in this episode is great, too. Loved the mythology with Drogen and the Deeper Well.
