A Hole in the World...

Gotta admit it, was a really sad episode, after all Wesley has just started dating the love of his life, you could really feel for him, very very sad ep.

This episode tore me up because I loved Fred from the moment she talked about the handsome man on a horse. I also loved Wesley from his first two episodes in Angel. Ugh. Getting depressed.

I do think it was a good move though. Illyria is very interesting and Amy got to show a whole different side of her acting ability.
Although . . . . I could just like her because my hair was also blue at the time that she showed up.

The one line that really tore me up was when Fred says (something along the lines of) "At a time like this I'm worried about how I look".

I'm not sure why that line in particular got to me, but it really did. It seemed very real. The entire sequence was done so real. It really showed just what talent Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof have.

It was torture watching Fred's death. I have never watched anything so dull, contrived and overdramatic in my life. I would have cheered her death, if I had not been bored out of my mind . . . or if it were not for the fact that Illyria appeared in her place.

Really? I don't really think that it was dull, contrived or overdramatic.
Also I thought Illyria was quite boring.
In what way did you find it any of those descriptions?

I never understood the purpose in killing Fred off, considering they could've made her misison during the last episode something amazing. Illyria I think was unnecessary but over all, well done.

Well, I'm happy for you. The death scene was too long for my tastes. I can barely stand long death scenes of characters I like. But when it happens with a character that one dislikes, it's extra torture. At least for me.

oh my God...i can't stop crying...just watched it!
"tell my parents i wasn't scared"
and the scene:you're my sunshine...and then spits blood in Wesley's face...really sad...it seems no couple will ever be happy in the Buffyverse...poor Fred and Wes...amazing performances by both Alexis and Amy Acker! 🙁

Does it bother you guys as bad as it bothers me that Joss seems to have a sick obsession with never letting any of his characters be happy with someone?

Oh tell me about it! It does bug the hell outta me.
I mean xanya was so perfect, BIG MISTAKE ending their relationship. ;'(

Bugs me as well. I actually made a thread about it once. Could we not just have one couple (either than Kennedy and Willow, cause in my book they don't count) end up together or happy? Reality may be that not every couple ends up together and happy. But in reality, not every couple are going to break up or get killed. At least ONE of the stinkin relationships have to work out or it's just silly and unrealistic!

Not that I have any hard feelings about it or anything... 😉

Fred broke my heart in this episode. Her line "Why can't I stay?" brings on the tears everytime. I just wanna slap Gunn upside the head and then some! Of course though, it introduced Amy Acker as Illyria which in my opinion, kicked butt.

Yeah of course it bothers me!!!Whenever a couple finds true happiness...sth bad happens...someone dies or someone turns evil...isn't it annoying???
This episode broke my heart....they just had 10 mins together as a couple...this series is full of sadness...i really love it though...and i think Illyria is terrific, but i still miss Fred!

Just watch this episode for the first time, and still have tears in my eyes. Others have already praised Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker for their brilliant performances, and I just have to add my praise on top of that. In a way, I think Fred's death was the most graphic I've seen in the Whedonverse so far (I know Wesley's is still coming, I'm pre-spoiled for it) because it was so drawn out and she was so obviously in pain. Tara's and Jenny Calendar's were violent but fast. It was difficult to watch Fred writhing in agony and to watch Wesley witness her distress. My only consolation is that I know I'm not going to lose Amy Acker as an actress for the last few episodes I have left.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think most people have covered everything I might have said. As it's been said the Caveman and Astronauts is a multi layered look at the contrast between perspectives, not only of primal and intellectualism but old and new. Fred words "Cavemen win" is particularly haunting, she knows.

Knox's line about Angel was particularly haunting. We can't accept that he wouldn't choose to save Fred but when we are presented with the circumstances, we understand Knox's words.

I admired Fred for standing and fighting even when she was close to death. As Wes learned in Lineage, she isn't the damsel in distress, she's not going to simply let people help her.

Gunn was heartbreaking. He starts singing G&S at the beginning of the ep (and Fred was right in THAW, he has got a nice voice) and when Wes comes in he tries unconvincingly to do his gangsta rap bit. Gunn isn't what he used to be, he's become the image he's presented. When he sees his part in what happened to Fred, he doesn't like this person either. When he goes to the conduit, his own reflection hurts him, that says it all for me.
