Okay, Eliza Dushku and Amber Benson...Two of my favourite actresses ever, but I was browsing IMdB today, and I find it pretty weird. Faith is always classed as a really important character and Tara isn't; yet Faith was in 20 episodes and Tara was in 46, It might not strike anyone else as being weird, Does anyone else think it as really unfair? People always say Tara's not important, I don't see why not. Post your thoughts =/

The only thing I can think of is that Faith's primary relationship was with Buffy, the title character. Tara's was with a secondary character. She didn't really have a whole lot of one-on-one interaction with Buffy.

Maybe because of the enormity of Faith's turning against the Scoobies that people find her more important? I don't think number of episodes has bearing in either case, they are both important in their own rights. I think Tara is important too, she really was part of the huge change in Willow, not just in sexuality but in personality, confidence, etc.

Maybe it also has to do with Tara being a more... quiet character and Faith being so crazy and extroverted, i think that sort of insanity had more of an impression on viewers? this isn't my personal view but just a thought. Though im not a huge fan of Tara but i would never say she isn't important, either.

I can't see labeling one over the other as more important.

Tara is a huge part of the show! and, i have to agree with LittleMiss. Maybe some people think Faith is a bigger part of the show because she's so outgoing and tara's so quiet

People ALWAYS say that evolution isn't reality too.
Notice not ALL people, just people.

I think what you need to do is maybe not care about what other peoples OPINIONS are on something like this.

So what if some no mark on another board from another country in another time in another parallel universe doesn't have the same opinion as you, if it is simply based on a personal like then WHO THE HELL CARES?!?!?!

Tara was an important member of Buffy's family, but her affect on Buffy is not as great as Faith. Doesn't make her any less important than her to the show.

Also it doesn't matter how many episodes either were in, last time I checked longevity of a character was of importance on how important a character was.

The importance of a character has nothing to do with longevity.. a perfect example is Doyle in Angel. He was there hardly any time at all, in comparison to everyone else. But does that make him unimportant?? Well considering he was the chief reason Angel set up Angel investigations, and the reason why Cordelia gained the visions, which became an EXTREMELY integral part of the whole story, I think not.

So, why should Faith being in less episodes make her less important, or someone saying that despite Tara is in more, that she's less important?? It's nothing to do with that, it's based on the effect that the character has on the people that surround them.

Personally, I feel that Faith was a more important character- she's had more of a lasting effect on alot of the Scoobies and on Buffy, and besides, slayer, as in, Buffy isn't the only one. I find Kendra to be an important character for the same reason and she's only in maybe 2 episodes (or is it 3?). But that's all personal opinion, if you think Tara is more important, then good for you. I just feel that Faith was a more integral twist in the overall picture of BtVS.

Personally, I love Tara (and Fred) but, her (their) character(s) was more of a quiet, interesting and loveable presence in the whole scheme of things.
I can see where Faith would come across as "more important". In many ways, more "important" than even Willow and Xander.
1.) She was a MAJOR presence in both shows, in fact, one of the few things that held the two shows together.
2.) She was a Slayer.
3.) She was a Slayer who went wrong and then made good.
4.) Her inner and outer turmoil and struggles with "good/bad" interplayed and impacted with almsot every character on BOTH shows. Perhaps even more than Buffy did.

Just a thought.

Faith being a slayer is a big thing. The show is about a slayer, yes Buffy but still, slayer...slayers. Since Faith was one, it made her importance to the show...important.
But Tara is awesome.

I mostly agree, though how long they were in doesn't have much of an effect. Tara for the most part is classified as unimportant, but I don't see how. She was with Willow for a good 3-4 years...and she changed Willow's character alot. It's not like she had no interaction with the other characters either...she had plenty of scenes with Buffy and Dawn.

Not trying to say that Faith wasn't important...but to me she didn't have as much of an effect. But again, that's just my opinion. Sure she's a slayer, but did she really change any of the other scoobies' lives? Not really. But she is a slayer, so therefor she has that "importantness" to her.

Tara wasn't around all that long. Season 4-6. And it wasn't even the whole season 4. But, she was important.
Who DIDN'T Faith mess with? Willow hated her from the get go, practically because she messed with her relationship with Buffy. She had a part in trying to end the world in S3. She was Xander's "first" and then tried to kill him. She changed bodies and slept with Riley. She even had CONTACT with Tara....in Buffy's body. She hijacked almost the whole cast of Angel in one way or another.
Saved the world from the big rock guy who blocked out the sun, helped get Angelus down so they could get Angel back. Then ran back to Sunnydale to save the world again.
I fail to see who she DIDN'T mess with!

Maybe it had something to do with the fact that Tara was such a quiet character that you rarely noticed that she was there. That's not to say that her part wasn't important, it was, but by the very nature of her character she was the last to speak up and first to avoid the spotlight. With a few exceptions, we all loved her, and we all accepted her importance to the day to day operation of the gang, but she was the one who almost never used her power, great as it probably was (I say probably because with very few exceptions, we rarely saw her use her power unless she was doing it as a support for Willow, as in the laundry room in "Hush").

Faith, on the other hand, was a scene stealer. The way she dressed, the way she talked, the very way she acted was a shout of, "Hey, look at me. I'M A SLAYER!!" She never did anything in a small way, and she never held back in anything she did. She was the one who ran where angels feared to tread. On more than one occasion, she even had Buffy working as HER backup instead of the other way around. By her very nature Faith was a scene stealer and a major player from her first moment on screen to all but the last couple of episodes of the series.

Both actresses played their individual roles perfectly. It's just that Tara was the type of person who avoided attention, the shy one, and Faith was the aggressive one who always made her presence known.

I find it highly disturbing that as a generalisation people will look at Faith as being more important because she was, for the most part of Buffy's life a nasty person. I think Tara had a much higher influence over the show, and therefore Buffy, to me because it was positive. Buffy's one on one time with Faith has always seemed like more but look at how many times Buffy has turned to Tara for guidance and help...

And there's no way you could say that Tara hasn't had a huge influence over the show... When Tara got shot Willow tried to end the world. When Faith was put in a coma noone cared. The influence that Faith has had to the characters in the show is nowhere near as large as she would like people to believe... Because at the end of the day she was always begging for attention so she got some. But Tara never wanted all the attention on her so she left people to come to her and choose what they wanted to think - therefore her attention on the show has been a lot more.

Wait now, the thread was why Faith is portrayed as a more "important" character than Tara. I adore Tara, personally. And she impacted Willow a LOT.
However, if we look at both characters as rocks tossed into a pond and the other characters as surrounding reeds in the water, Tara's "ripples" touched only a few people. She touched Willow, Oz, Dawn and Buffy a lot. Xander, Anya, Spike and Giles a little too. Although, there wasn't a whole lot of active interaction other than her being there and they accepted her. She interacted with people, and in a very likable way and they seemed to enjoy her. Oddly, Willow seemed to be really the only person (other than us) effected by her death. Everyone else, but Dawn, seemed to kind of gloss over it.

Faith left ripples with EVERYONE. I don't think she was really "nasty", I think she just was lost. Angel saw it. She'd made mistakes, and like many of us, wasn't sure the most productive way to get OUT of them.
Her actions had ripple effects all over the whole Buffy/Angel-verse. I can't think of a member of the Buffy cast that she didn't upset in either way...good or bad. She upset the entire Watcher's Counsel, but they NEEDED upsetting.
She worked both with and against Wolfram and Hart, with and against Angel and Co. Her story....whether nasty or nice, shorter or longer than Tara's, was most complex. Being a Slayer, on top of that, makes her an integral part of the story.
I don't think it's because she was a mean and nasty person. I think it is more about the complexities of it and her effect on the rest of the characters. She was the contrast for what Buffy COULD be. The evidence of what Angel was and how deeply he felt about his redemption and helping others. She was an example for taking the "easy" way out of problems or really aiming to redeem yourself and make yourself a better person. She's the one that started the ball rolling for us to see that the Counsel was a bunch of nim-wits. She held many different roles in both shows and really showed how people can grow and change into different people.
It's nothing AGAINST Tara. I think she's fabulous. I know one or two people like her. On the other hand, I know a LOT more people who have a little "Faith" in them. The wanting to fit in, the wanting things for yourself without thinking of the impact to others. The wanting to get OUT of trouble and into people's good graces without realizing that when you screw up and hurt people that it takes a LOT to redeem yourself in their eyes. The hurt when you realize that if you just take what YOU want without thinking of others that you end up totally off the path you wanted to be on.

Besides, how Willow handled Tara's death is really more of a story about Willow, in my opinion, and not one about Tara. Especially since we know Tara would NOT have approved of any of Willow's actions.

So are we discussing importance or story lines?

Okay, then take out the word "story" if that makes it better. Although I fail to see how storylines don't effect character. But, if it helps...
*Besides, how Willow handled Tara's death is really more about Willow, in my opinion, and not one about Tara. Especially since we know Tara would NOT have approved of any of Willow's actions.* better?

Yeah, better! But my opinion still stands! I guess a how important a character is to the show is based on personal opinion - and as a generalisation people see Faith as being more important but to me it I will always find Tara a more important element to the show.

(It's hard to type and smoke at the same time so I'm keeping it short and sweet!)

Well, if we're going on PERSONAL opinion, I like Tara best. I'd take her and write Faith out of the script if I had to choose between the two.

I'm just stating that if we're questioning why Faith is billed as "more important" it would be because HER actions impacted the entire cast about a zillion times in both good and bad ways.
