Male sex drive is at the root of most conflict in the world, from football violence to world wars, scientists have claimed.
A review of psychological evidence concludes that men are shaped by evolution to be aggressive towards 'outsiders'.
The tendency, at the heart of all inter-tribal violence, emerged through natural selection as a result of competition for mates.

Today it can be seen in large-scale conflicts between nations as well as clashes involving rival gangs, football fans or religious groups, say the researchers.
Women, on the other hand, are said to have evolved to resolve conflicts peacefully.
Natural selection has programmed them to 'tend and befriend' to protect their offspring.

Professor Mark van Vugt, from the Institute for Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology at Oxford University, said: 'A solution to conflict, which is an all too common problem in societies today, remains elusive.
'One reason for this might be the difficulty we have in changing our mindset, which has evolved over thousands of years.
'Our review of the academic literature suggests that the human mind is shaped in a way that tends to perpetuate conflict with "outsiders".

'Our research finds that conflict between rival groups of men has presented opportunities to gain access to mates, territory and increased status.
'We believe this has resulted through natural selection in an evolved psychology amongst men to initiate and display acts of inter-group aggression.'

Better behaved: Researchers say natural selection has programmed women to 'tend and befriend' to protect their offspring
The findings, which support the so-called 'male warrior hypothesis', are published today in the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B.
In all cultures and throughout history men rather than women have sought to get their way by initiating violence, the psychologists claim.
Men were more likely to demonstrate prejudice and discrimination against other men viewed as outsiders, according to the research.
They preferred group-based hierarchies and were identified more strongly with their own groups than women.
At a basic level, such 'tribal' aggression helped men in a group to obtain more females, increasing their chances of reproduction.
'We see similar behaviour in chimpanzees,' said Prof van Vugt. 'For example, the males continuously monitor the borders of their territory.
'If a female from another group comes along, she may be persuaded to emigrate to his group.
'When a male strays too far, however, he is likely to be brutally beaten and possibly killed.'

This is an article in one of the online UK papers today, and I thought it was interesting.

What are your opinions on this?

try the other video I've put :-)
Well, The Daily Mail it's not my favourite source of information, so if you got them I'd love to read the papers of the experiment!! 🙂

While on topic, I STROGLY SUGGEST EVERYONE to read about the Milgram's obedience experiment and the Stanford's prison experiment!
Milgram's:

original footage: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8olVHKgIBXc"]Original Milgram Experiment - YouTube[/ame]
similar video:

Stanford's:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_prison_experiment
documentary with original footage: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkmQZjZSjk4"]Stanford Prison Experiment (Documentary) - YouTube[/ame]

They can be tough to watch, but I think that knowing more about what every human being can do to each other is always good. Even if we don't think we could act like this, we must remember that social environment is stronger than we think.
The bystander effect is also really interesting, and it could be a wake-up call:

Awesome sources :) Although the first video is blocked in my country.

Milgram/Zimbardo karma. Zimbardo sort of looks like a vampire, doesn't he?

david4wt, I wasn't just saying that before I watched them, just to clear that up. I've heard about them before, but I'm in the process of watching the second video 🙂

And here all these years we've been told that it was guns, which is why our government keeps trying to confiscate them and cut them up for scrap iron.

FOR GOD"S SAKE DON'T LET OBAMA FIND OUT ABOUT THIS!!!!

It sure puts a whole new slant on Heston's famous words...

Well, I don't know of any studies that correlates gun access and crime rate (I'm sure someone did though) but I believe that easy access to guns makes the crime rate higher...
I think that these experiments prove that military violence (for example Abu Grahib) it's not determined by the single soldier but from the WHOLE army institution!
Speaking of violence, I know they are a lot of americans here, what do you think of death penalty?

Cast No Shadow I didn't think of that for a second!! 🙂

I also read somewhere that sexual frustration is one of the leading causes of many illnesses, mental and physical.

That wouldn't surprise me as it is a form of stress and stress is a significant contributor to most illnesses of the mind/body.
david4wt, the (now) 3rd video was so interesting, thanks for that!

It was kinda odd how the second one had a lot of footage from the 3rd one in it, but it's probably me missing something.

Cast No Shadow I'm sorry, I didn't check the videos! I can't edit it now 🙁 Stanford experiment was done after Milgram's, so I guess they put some of the second one in the documentary about Stanford to make it more complete! Well:
Vid number 1: documentary about Milgram's experiment
Vid number 2: original footage of Milgram's experiment
Vid number 3: documentary about Stanford's prison with original footage, and some from Milgram's!

Haha don't be sorry, it just confused me slightly, I don't think they openly stated it was a different study (or perhaps they did and I'm just being slow).

But thanks anyway!

I just saw your bio...DON'T GET ME WET BECAUSE THE BANDAGES WILL ALL COME OFF!! Dresden Dolls karma!! :-)
Speaking of violence, I know they are a lot of americans here, what do you think of death penalty?

States that have death penalty laws do not have lower crime rates or murder rates than states without such laws. And states that have abolished capital punishment show no significant changes in either crime or murder rates...so it has no deterrent effect. Most people that I know who are for the death penalty see it as "an eye for an eye" sort of thing. I kind of wish that we didn't have it, at all. The purpose of it should be to stop people from committing crimes, but statistics show that it doesn't. So we don't need it. I'm content with people rotting in jail, but then there's the issue of overcrowding. Ugh.

ProphecyGirl65 that's exactly my position, I didn't want to sound biased when I asked 🙂

Joan the Vampire Slayer Well Freud's hysteric patients were hysteric also because of how Viennesse society back in late '800 was excluding women from any form of sexualization! They were supposed to be daughter, sisters, wives and mother...not sexualized women! I know that was more than 100 years ago, but I think it shows how sexuallity is important to form an healthy personality!

haha yeah, capital punishment seems to mainly be about retribution...which is kind of sick.

I don't know about gun access/ crime rate studies either but don't forget that correlation is not causation. Violent crimes are also higher durin warmer months but weather alone does not *cause* crime... It's just a contributing factor. The same holds true for the group think mind set demonstrated in Zimbardo's prison experiment. While I believe that it supports the idea that the military institution *contributes* to group think types of violence, it is not causative. And my goodness, the death penalty can hijack the entire thread so I wont go there... But I think this is a very interesting report and always find correlates to be amusing and worth looking into.

Yes yes I didn't want to put a cause/effect relation where there's no causation! I didn't explain myself really well 🙂 But correlation is also really really significant I think!

Sometimes, it's just dangerous when people start thinking that they are the same or if the statistics behind the correlation are weak as statistics are so easy to manipulate! It just makes me nervous when someone says that correlative data "proves" something. You referenced some of my all time favorite studies though and I'd karma you a million times if I could just for that!

Yes I know how statistic are easily manipulated, I'm sorry I didn't express myself well! I'm not trying to go all propaganda on anyone I swear 😀

Oh, I didn't think you were doing that. I'm just a correlation is not causation crusader ;) it's a pathology of my very own making. :D
