A Question about the episode 'Helpless'...

I just have a question about the episode Helpless, aka the eppie where Giles gets fired... ::crying2: That ritual in which a slayer loses her powers on her 18th birthday...I think it's called the Cruciamentum or something...why did Buffy go through with it? I mean, she wasn't really the chosen one at the time, Faith was. Buffy was just a slayer, while Faith was the slayer. Is this because the Watcher's Council knew about this special case where Buffy was still alive but not still really the chosen one? And, did Faith also have her Cruciamentum? Thanks.
 
Giles says in the ep that Faith has no interest in learning the skills or whatever that are required of a slayer, so he relies on Buffy to learn. maybe this is why?
but i always assumed that Faith was older than Buffy, and therefore had already gone through her trail, and obviously survived.
or, failing that theory, if in fact Faith is younger than Buffy, she was going to be put through her trail at a later date, until she went evil and killed people, forcing the Council to scrap the plan.

but, hey, this is just me. any other thoughts, guys?

After much discussion that we've had here on the boards, we're still unsure of two things:

1. Who is the true slayer (Buffy or Faith)
and
2. Which of the two slayers is older?

You have to make your own opinion based on what you believe in. My opinion, based on my thoughts about these two questions is that Buffy is the original slayer, which makes her the slayer until she dies. That's why she went through with the trial. Also, I think we never got to see Faith's trials because she is either older than Buffy and had it in Boston or it was just never done on her because of her being rogue.

You have to call it as you believe it.

Well, I think/hope everyone agrees that Faith was the "real slayer" (as in the one with the slayer line, who would activate a new slayer if killed) in season 3 😀

And my opinion is that Faith probably didn't do that whole ritual thing, seeing as the council were in charge of that, and they never really cared much for her (except for when they wanted her killed that is). And if they got to choose between faith and Buffy, it doesn't surprise me that they chose Buffy.
 
I totally agree that Faith was the "real/true/blaha/whatever slayer" in season 3 and still at the time she was sent to jail. I guess she was right until Willow brought Buffy back? Cause that's where the big scewup begins.

Also, if she were younger, what are the chances that it was nearing Faith's eighteenth birthday as well? If you remember, they mentioned that the slayer was to take the test come her eighteenth birthday.

Yeah, they really didn't...care. Also, the fact that she didn't really have her own Watcher to do that with. I mean, obviously Buffy listened to Giles (with the training and all) because they were closer than Faith was with him.

Sorry for asking such stupid questions, but do we ever find out how old Faith is? Perhaps she's not 18 yet. Giles does remark that if a slayer turns 18 she goes through the ritual. Is it possible Faith hasn't reached 18 yet?

Anyway, my question about this is...why not tell Buffy about this "loss of powers" thing before it happens? It's not like she could have done anything about it anyway!

Well, people are debating this, lol. Faith is said to be a few months older than Buffy actually, although some people don't accept this, and say that she is actually younger... It was discussed in this thread (among others): https://www.buffy-boards.com/showthread.php?t=21859&highlight=faith's+age

1] I believe that Faith is the true Slayer until S6, when Buffy was resurrected. Blahblahblah, big screwups, blahblah. So, Buffy, S3? Not the true Slayer.

2] I also believe Faith was younger than Buffy. I think Faith turned eighteen around S4, and she was too busy killing things for the Council to give a damn. Also accounts for her going to jail after that instead of juvie, which puts her at seventeen in S3.

Sense maketh? I hope so.
 
Yeah obviously, but the actual story itself didn't make sense to me because Faith was still in Sunnydale and on Buffy's side.
