Wil's Apprentice
A SECOND CHANCE
Neil Burns (Neilxan)
A post-series story starring our favorite "Big Bad"
"I love you, Spike."
The vampire smiled at Buffy as his soul destroyed wave after
wave of Uber-Vamps and the cavern collapsed. The other
Slayers had already ran up the steps and were dashing to the
entrance. The Slayer loved him? A nice thought, but he knew
it could never be.
"No, you don't," He replied. "But thank you for saying so."
He felt his body burn up like paper, flames disintergrating his
clothes and his organs. As his flesh melted off his face, he
laughed. It was a laugh of relief. Of freedom. Of finally finding
peace. Even if he was going to spend enternity in Hell. He
had atoned for his century-plus killing and torturing. He had
redeemed himself.
"Hello, Spike," A gentle voice tickled his ear.
Spike opened his eyes and found himself lying in a field. Near
him, he saw a pair of delicate bare feet connected to slender
legs. Looking up, he saw a smiling face of a girl around twenty
years of age dressed in a tunic dress. What was she doing
in Hell? Wait a minute! Was this Hell? Spike looked around and
saw instead of devils, fire, suffering souls and the like, a clear
blue sky and a lush green field with many types of flowers. What was he doing here? He turned back to the girl, whose
features was framed by blonde ringlets.
"Ere," He mused. "You're Red's bird, right?"
"The one and the same," Tara replied. "How is she?"
"Red's fine. Got a new playmate."
"Well," The witch smiled wickedly. "I guess I have to have a
word with her."
"Where am I? Heaven?"
"Not quite. However, the Higher Ups were quite impressed with
your sacrifice. So, they are rewarding you with a second
chance at life."
"A second chance as a re-souled vampire?"
"No. A second chance as a human."
"Are you serious?"
"I am. You can enjoy the sunlight without having to worry
about being destroyed."
The ex-vampire chuckled. How bloody lovely. His sire Angel
was suffering and struggling with a prophecy which dictatated
how he would become human while Spike made one simple
sacrifice and he got to come back as one easy breezy. Oh,
would Angel be pissed!
"Fine with me, love. Send me back."
The Slayerettes were enjoying a game of volleyball on the
beach while Buffy and Xander were enjoying strawberries.
Willow and Kennedy were snuggling together nearby while
Giles told Ford about Principal Snyder's more amusing faults.
Suddenly, a vortex opened in the sky and a body fell through
and hit the sand with a resounding thump, much to everyone's
shock.
"Ohhh." The figure groaned. "Bloody hell! Osiris, you wanker!"
That voice! That Yorkshire accent was unmistakeable as was
that familiar platinum-blonde hair. Everyone gasped as he
rose to his full height, the duster heavy under the heat.
"Spike!" Xander gasped.
"No, Harris," The former "Big Bad" retorted. "It's Peter Bloody
Pan. Who do you think!"
"But, you're dead!"
"Another brilliant deduction by SunnyHell's resident Sherlock."
"How are you here, Spike?" Giles put in, confused and shocked.
"You burnt up destroying the Master's Super-Vampires."
"Well, Ol' Darling," The ex-vampire smiled. "Seems the Higher
Ups, or whoever, were impressed by my sacrifice, so they
decided to reward me by giving me a second chance."
He paused to take a cigarette one of the Slayerettes offered
him and light it. He puffed away in contentment.
"In other words, Ripper Ol'Boy, you and your little Scoobies
ain't getting rid of William the Bloody that easy."
Through the conversation, Buffy sat on the blanket staring in
complete and utter disbelief. Spike was here! Her heart sang
with joy as she almost tackled him in her embrace. Xander
glowered as the other Slayerettes' reactions ranged from
amazement to chuckling.
"Hey, B," Faith called. "What's wrong with this picture?"
"Spike's here," Buffy replied.
"Yeah."
"And it's sunny."
"Right."
"What Faith is saying, Buff," Willow put in, "is that Spike is
not burning up."
Buffy released Spike and looked him over. He wasn't burning
up or disintergrating or anything. Something was wrong. How
could he be in the daylight and still be in one piece?
"What's up, Spike?" Buffy queried. "Why aren't you all burny
and gross?"
"Well, when I was in the afterlife I saw Red's bird and she
said that the Higher Ups gave me a second chance. As a
human being."
"You saw Tare Bear?" Willow's eyes shone.
"Yup. And she says hi. She also wants a word with you about
your new cuddletoy."
"So, we're stuck with you," Xander intoned, not very happy about this turn of events."
"That's about the shape of things, mate."
The group pondered this for a moment. Spike was no longer
a vampire, but a human being. This meant that he could move
about in the daytime just like they could, which meant that
he could travel with wherever the next "Hellmouth" popped
up. Of course, being human would meant he was a lot more
vulnerable plus they would have to put up with his smug,
boorish behavior. Still--
"Well," Giles mused. "If the Powers That Be feel you deserve
a second chance, I suppose we could give you one as well."
Watcher and ex-vampire shook hands as Buffy embraced him
tightly glad that he was back. Things were certainly going to
be interesting and she did not want it any other way.
