I have a few suggestions concerning karma system, can we either throw it away altogether, or make the comments unseen, or program it in a way that people in one's ignore list can't give any reputations to that one? Ta.

I think the karma system is fine. I don't think the comments should be unseen if someone is agreeing/disagreeing with me I'd like to know why. And also I suggested, and I'm sure others have already put this into action as I am new here, that disagreeing should only be used if someone has said something offensive and to quote the person and reply in a new post (not thread) if you have a different view point.

I'm fine with the karma system as it stands. I reckon that if you are willing to say something around here then you should be big enough to accept somebody disagreeing with you. If you think that your comment is going to get you bad karma then either don't make it or it least try to be polite in putting your point across.

From what i have seen since i've been here most of us have no problem with being disagreed with as long as it is done in a polite way and the person disagreeing at least gives his or her reasons why.

Besides, at the end of the day, even if somebody does give you a little bad karma, is it really going to ruin your life?

Couldn't agree more! So what you get a bit of bad karma! It's not the end of the world.

Some people take things WAY too seriously.
Neither are you a moderator and admin and you are extremely very rude.

I still stand that people in someone's ignore list shouldn't be allowed to give karma to them.

Okay well obviously no member of staff or admin are online at the moment so we were just trying to help you out.

I found this in the FAQ that might explain why Karma appears in posts.

Reputation / Karma
You can rate other members posts (by clicking on the icon at the top right of posts). All your ratings combine to your reputation (symbolized by the green jewel in your posts). You may leave comments (such as "I totally agree!"). Please use this rather than actually posting short messages like "I agree" that don't really add tothe discussion itself, but allow you to express your support / disagreement for the person.

Buffy Summers says she would prefer us to use this rather than make short posts.

Also I recall in another thread I read yesterday that BS says this,
The best way to get help is to post in the Help Forum - more staff members will see your question there (instead of just one via pm or email) and other members may also be able to help if a staff members is not online.

I got that from here

did you mean me? tell me what was rude about what i said?
If you knew her, anyone who holds an opinion different from hers is obviously against her.

She actually told me she put me on her ignore list, I had her on mine for about a day till I was just WTFever about it, I have no interest in disagreeing with her despite the fact she'd being a baby about it. I do give pretty much everyone she's disagreed with their karma back though.

I still stand that people in someone's ignore list shouldn't be allowed to give karma to them.

The only neg karma ive had has been from her.

Ive noticed on this board that if someone agrees they give karma, but if they disagree, they tend to just post instead. unless its someone totally deserving bad karma. which is rare.

Yeah, The Blue is the only person who I've gotten negative karma from also.

Picking Kharma fights aren't only silly, there the fastest way to go down from 200 to 100.
THE BLUE, with regard to the bad karma you gave me in that earlier post, trust me, won't be giving it a second thought. Certainly won't be spoiling my day!

This reply is about your attitude. When you post in a public forum then you have to expect that others will be free to agree or disagree with you. You posted a topic that about the karma function that effects all of us and therefore we are all entitled to comment. If you did not wish us to reply then surely the best idea would have been to send a PM to Buffy Summers so that nobody else could get involved.

I'm pretty certain that you are the only person that has ever given me bad karma here and yet i'm also pretty certain that i have never done the same to you, in fact i don't recall giving it to anyone here. If a disagree i simply reply and explain why i do so.

It seems very ironic to me that the only person complaining about the karma system is the one that gives the most bad karma out.

Karma is just a simple way to show other board members what you feel about a post. It's much easier and saves space than posting an agreement.

If you have a problem with negative/positive karma, a suggestion would be to disregard the karma system personally yourself. It's your choice whether or not to use it. But don't expect to receive karma back if you are choosing to use it. Remember, what comes around goes around.

Negative karma is very rarely used, so it's not really an issue. If you are only on the boards to receive karma, I think you're missing the point of the boards.

Considering the karma points have been in place for a long time, I'm pretty sure that they are sticking around.

Oh you got there before me =)
Okay please, calm down people. THE BLUE, seems like your problem has more to do with certain members than the rep/comment function? In that case I agree that it's probably better if you talk to Buffy about instead of making it everyone's business...

Personally I never even thought about the fact that there is an ignore list, and I'm quite not that many people use it or the negative karma thing. Like The Watcher said, you (THE BLUE) is almost the only person who has ever given me negative rep (you've given me quite a lot of it though 😉 )...

agreed, Epo.

If you are having certain problems with certain members constantly giving you negative rep and you don't see it as just... this should probably be brought up personally with a mod or admin. If you think you are being treated unfairly by some people, then it could be watched.

But, if you are willing to post, you need to set yourself up to be disagreed with. That's life. I know that a majority of my thoughts are going to be disagreed with and I don't care, because I believe in my own opinions.

People on your ignore list still have the right to read anything you have posted. As pointed out by the other Mods, if you come online and post your opinion on a public message board, you have to first consider that someone else may not agree completely with everything you have said.

The karma is visible to avoid short or spammy type posts of "I agree!" and "Well said" while still letting other members 'voice' how they feel about a certain post. That's why it's visible.

Wait wait wait wait..........something just hit me here that i didn't realise.....The BLUE is a girl!!!!

(oops...should not have written that....will be getting bad Karma i reckon....ohh well.)

But on the topic at hand, the idea of the Karma system without public viewing of comments is a waste of internet space.
I mean, what is the point of it otherwise.
In a conversation debate, its great to have the Karma comments to have either backing you up, or disagreeing with you as that allows not only yourself, but other people to make comment on it.

My only irk is when people give Bad Karma on a comment that is documented fact, they just refuse to believe it....*cough PZ cough cough*.....teasing

George was legally elected in 2000....bless!(sorry another topic)
