I was out for a ride in the countryside, and I was inspired...and just a paragraph didn't seem to do it justice...

Autumn has come,
and Summer, in a fit of pique,
has smashed her pallette
on a canvas of green.
Strawberry red;
Dandelion yellow;
Sunset orange.
Warm, riotous colours,
Impermanent,
Waiting to be scrubbed clean
by Winter's blustery sighs.

At least I didn't try to rhyme "effulgent"...😉

Nice image KD...you are a man of many talents

Thanks, mate...wasn't sure how it would go...God knows I'm no poet, nor even a fan of such...it just came into my little brain...
One should try and stay away from rhyming unless one is extremely talented (not to say you aren't 🙂 ).. Gotta love autumn though, it sure does bring inspiration. Nicely written.

Thanks, Johanna...that's why I chose an open-style verse, so I wouldn't have to do the lame rhymes I hate about poetry.
Ahh, nicely done, Gnome. (stands up and gives KD a "golf clap").

Quite the array of talent ya got there, slick.

Now all you have to do is learn how to rhyme "effulgent" and your skills shall be complete. (**Emperor Palpatine cackle**)

Thanks, mon ami...I keep missing you online, though...been a while. PM if you have a minute!
Fall's the best season and October's the best month. The air finally cools down. It's crisp and dry. Gorgeous skies, trees. It's sort of bittersweet.

As soon as Halloween is over, the three or four months of Christmas kick in"”in the States anyway. Blech. Nothing against Christ or his birthday, but geez, all the "stuff": shopping, commercials, cacophony, yadda yadda...

Thanks, my friend...you've got some word talent yourself, so any praise from you is high praise indeed, IMO!

With ya on that! I love Fall, tho....it's one of my favorite seasons.

Well, I ain't a poet and I was always really really bad at writing poems in school. However, had I let you write my poems, my teacher would have been impressed and the words "Good attempt" would never have crossed her lips.

I told you that you are a man of many talents and that your poem would be received well. It's a very nice (I'm not big with the descriptive words like you) poem, dwarfy... and I'm not just saying that cos I like you. 😉 I will never say that I want to drive a railroad spike through my head after reading something you have written... hee hee!

Thank you, my dear...I'm glad you liked it!
LMAO! So, he doesn't get a "Bloody Awful Poet" tacked on to the end of his name, huh? KD, it IS an excellent poem! Very evocative of the feeling I get from Fall, too.

Why, thank you so much, kind lady! No railroad spikes is a good thing!
What a poem! Pretty neat stuff KD.

I have recently decided that I really like fall. I like cold weather, but I hate snow, so Fall is perfect weather for me. My first graders like to go outside and pick leaves, and that is fun too!

Thanks for the kind words!

Yeah, we get that too...I noticed our local Costco already had Christmas trees this week...ooooog.

Thanks to everyone for the nice reviews...I don't much like poetry, and I never thought I'd actually write any, let alone post it in public...

SpikedBuffy: Just don't let 'em go apple picking...too many trees to fall out of, and too many "weapons of war" to throw at each other...😉

You know, I've never actually tried to truly, creatively, write anything since 7th, 8th grade or so. I admire people who take the poetic leap, even if it's only these boards...nice KD.

Who do you guys like, if anyone? I always enjoyed Keats in particular. And also, Emily Dickinson is too quirky for some, but I always admired the intimacy, distinctness of her style. And Poe. It's been years since I cracked open a volume though. My dad's such a sap, he actually gets physically choked up when reciting Shakespeare or Keats, can't finish it...

I don't really know how to quantify or qualify poetry...seems more magical than visual art in some ways.

John Keats

To Autumn

              1Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
              2Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
              3Conspiring with him how to load and bless
              4With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
              5To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
              6And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
              7To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
              8With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
              9And still more, later flowers for the bees,
            10Until they think warm days will never cease,
            11For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells.
            12Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
            13Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
            14Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
            15Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;
            16Or on a half-reap'd furrow sound asleep,
            17Drows'd with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
            18Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers:
            19And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
            20Steady thy laden head across a brook;
            21Or by a cyder-press, with patient look,
            22Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.
            23Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?
            24Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,--
            25While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day,
            26And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue;
            27Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
            28Among the river sallows, borne aloft
            29Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
            30And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
            31Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
            32The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft;
            33And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.
