In the spirit of the Religion thread I bring forth another controversial issue...especially with the Americans in an election year, I'd like to know your opinions on Abortion.

I consider myself pro-choice, however, for myself I would not choose abortion should I get myself in that sort of situation. But I don't believe anyone should limit my right to choose. I think the elimination of abortion would lead to a rise in illegally and poorly done underground abortions and thus create a bigger problem overall.
 
Hmmm... good question. It's technically illegal here, but in practice girls tend to disappear on short holidays to Britain, when and if...

Myself... I suppose I'm pro choice. I don't think I'd choose it, and I would try very, very hard to convince somebody else not to, but at the end of the day, it's such a big, personal question that it might be best left as a personal chioce for the people involved..
 
Ahh..I'm glad to see your opinion...hoping you'd visit this thread 😀 Maybe we can start a series of "Debate the Issue" threads...get some intelligent conversation going.
 
I am completely Pro-Choice for the simple reason that we can not dictate that a woman must produce a child regardless of the fact that she may have initiated the act with consentual sex. When we achieve a birth control that is 100% affective then perhaps I would be less pro-choice but right now-- no way. It's my body and my choice. What if I were raped? The religious right would say that it's God plan for me to have the child. What about my plan? What if I am not religious? Many people state that a fetus has a right to life. This is perhaps the most ludicrous notion ever stated. a fetus? bah! It simply comes down to the fact that its a woman's body and her life that will be ultimately changed. It's interesting the most vocal opponents of pro-choice are men.

I'm really going out on a limb and disagreeing with you all.

I'm pro-life, except in special circumstances.

And I do believe that an unborn child or fetus has the right to live.

Yeah, I'm a religious person, but it doesn't come to to religion for this issue to me. It comes down to life and the right to it.

Though I think this would not be an issue (except in instances of rape and such) if we could promote use of protection. People wouldn't have to complain about having to bear a child if they would simply use a condom or go on birth control. Its easy.

All the thoughts of "It's my body" wouldn't have been brought to without one's LIFE.
 
Actually, I'm just after giving on on an insane blazing row on the subject on IMDB.... some lunatic said they were going to boycott Kill Bill 2 because Uma Thurman was Pro Abortion. First of all it was pointed out that "Pro Abortion" would lead to the extinction of the race... then somebody else pointed out that Thurman is a practising Buddhist, so it's unlikely. And lastly, that if there was ever a film about the importance of motherhood it's Kill Bill 2...

In the end, the arguement swings on what you define as life...

As Jill so aptly pointed out, it comes down to what you define as life. I don't define the fetus stage as a living entity. What is life? As soon as the egg is penetrated is that life? Are condoms just small abortions? They stop the possibility of life. Should we outlaw those as well? Technically the are stopping the life of an unborn child. It's really quite ridiculous. Who has the right to define life? Is a man on a life support living? He's being artificially kept alive is that truly life?Who has the right? No one. Who has the right to force someone to produce life? No one.

I think life is self supporting in the way that until the fetus inside the womb has the capabilities to survive outside the womb, in this world, it is not a life. This is why I'm anti Partial Birth abortions because most of those babies could survive.
 
You can argue that anything is stopping life. I mean really, anything!

But condoms are a mode of not stopping, but preventing. I doubt that anyone would think condoms are foul just because they prevent life. Theres a difference between preventing life and bluntly destroying it.

And condoms stop the egg from being fertilized, which in my opinion, is when life begins! Why should someone automatically be judged as "born" when they come out of the womb? That makes no sense, since they have been techinically "born" for roughly 9 months?
 
Pro choice for me as well. It should be every person's decision whether to have a child or not. We live in a world that wants to condemn abortions, yet stigmatizes unmarried mothers. We also live in an incredibly overpopulated world, and a world of extremely screwed up kids (who becoming screwed up adults). What kind of life is there for a child whose parents do not want them? But regardless of this...it should be your own decision. There shouldn't be someone who doesn't even know me dictating whether I have to ruin my life or not.

It's funny, when I was in high school, there was a guy friend of mine who was pro life. And I said, "Well then if you got your girlfriend pregnant would you marry her?" And he said "No I would dump her." Ironically several years later he did get his girlfriend pregnant and did marry her. Go figure. lol

Actually the catholic church forbids all forms of birth control (other than the rhythm method).

Oh my point really is though that each person should decide what to do according to their beliefs.

I was about to point that out. Not just the Catholic church even a few extreme fundamentalist forbids condoms, birth control , etc. because as the bible says "I knew you before you were in the womb".
 
Prophecy Girl, I took that out because it could be interpreted in either way. if the president of that time supported abortion or if he didn't. But it came out sounding that abortion would totally be outlawed. Don't make it sound like I tried to take something out because I regretted saying it. I don't regret my opinion, I just don't like that it could be taken in many ways, not clearly stated

No my bad. I was a bit iffy on how it would come out, but I posted it anyways. And I thought someone might notice and that would make me look coward-like. But sorry, should have clearly stated things better. 🙂
