To get an avatar do I have to use a pre-made BB one or upload a picture to make one of my own? I know this is probably a silly question, but I read the FAQ and don't know what kind of avatar I'd be allowed to use.

Just curious - bandwidth-wise, how do avatars compare to the banners that people have? I have a Giles-esque knowledge of computers so I might be way wrong, but with banners being larger, don't they take up gobs of bandwidth?

Again, just curious. Not a criticism at all - I like the current avi collection and have no qualms with it.

Banners are hosted externally, they are not stored locally, while custom avatars are.

Regardless, that is only one reason we do not have custom avatars, and it is not a subject up for debate.
