Hi all, newbie here. Just started watching the show this year. I'm in S3 and had some q's concerning Faith.

First do slayers get paid? Because how is Faith paying for the crappy motel room and even eating? When she eats at B's house, she seems to be starving. Also, is she even old enough to be on her own? Oh and why is there so much inconsistency with her even being in S3 eps. She's there for one or two then weirdly absent, then back, I don't get it.

Thanks for the help.

In other circumstances, such as Kendra's. where her Watcher was also her guardian, the Watcher was apparently responsible for supporting his or her Slayer. Since Buffy obviously did not live with Giles, it's fair to say that that rule is more of a suggestion than a hard fast law.

As for how Faith managed to support herself, that's been discussed several times here before, and I don't think that anyone has ever come up with more than a guess based on what little was ever really mentioned about Faith's financial arrangements prior to Mayor Wilkins "adopting" her. Possibly either Giles gave her money from either his own or Watcher Council's accounts, or she had some money given to her from her previous Watcher.

Another theory is that she took over the manager's job at her flea bag motel (remember, the previous manager was killed by Kokistos, so the job would be open) and got her room rent free as part of her salary.

Possibly she took whatever valuables, jewelry, weapons, or whatever, off of the bodies of the various demons she slayed (or slew). Or perhaps her "Want, take, have" philosophy might be an indication that Faith wasn't above petty theft, though anything major would have been hard for her to keep concealed from the gang for long.

I can't picture Faith slinging burgers at the Double Meat Palace the way Buffy did, but she might have done some bodyguard work

Those are some of the theories that I can remember. I'm sure there were others, maybe someone else can remember some of them.

Nice work!
I don't think Slayers get paid, Buffy treats it like an unpaid job but they don't get money for it, Watchers of course do get paid in some form or another. As for Faith and money I don't think she had much (if any despite her vast wardrobe) but she might have had enough to survive. I could never see her doing a job nor resorting to theft either apart from when she robbed the shop with Buffy.

I do like the idea of her managing the crappy motel like white avenger has pointed out or her doing some sort of body guard work, it would make more sense as Faith does like to party. I'd like to know if she got to do any jobs in prison like cooking or working in a library though... it depends how much in control she had over herself.

I think Joss has said that faith is older than Buffy, so she's old enough to be on her own, and even if she isn't, I doubt Faith would care, she's the runaway-don'tgive-adamn-about-the-law- type.

Why isn't Faith in every episode? I kinda get the idea that she's overall a lone wolf. In the episode revelations, with the fake watcher, she does feel left out of the scooby gang( which I understand, since buffy was a bit jealous at first and didn't want her there). So she did want to be a part of the gang, but she didn't know how. Then Faith might have been scared away/felt ashamed that she believed the fake watcher Whendylon Post(or whatshername) so she stayed away.

Also, Faith not going to Sunnydale High, means she can't be around all the time.

I honestly don't think that Faith is more than a few months, maybe one year tops, older than Buffy. Therefore, it's just her motivation and spirits of fighting that keep her running in the game.

No...Slayers do not get paid. Faith just steals as much money as she can, as shown in an Angel episode from season one.

I didn't really feel there was too much inconsistency with Faith...She was only in about half/three-fourths of the Season Three episodes because the show is not called Faith the Vampire Slayer. She wasn't in the title credits, she was more like Joyce or Spike an d Drusilla with her appearences, only appearing when she was needed. Not until the end of the season did the story focus shift over to her.

So she really was all on her own. That clarifies a lot. Thanks all.

Yep pretty much, everything Faith had in the way of family and friends sort of left her. Her mum died and was an alcoholic, her first watcher who we pressume she came to care about a lot got killed, then any friends of the Scooby's she did make turned their back the moment she began killing and went to the dark side. Even in the comics now shes pretty much on her own apart from Giles teaming up with her.

EDIT: The only person who never gave up on her was Angel, thats the one person I think deep down she can really trust the most.

I agree with everyone though Faith does seem a little older than Buffy most likely by a year at the most. Thats the impression on age I got from her. It would be nice to have her age revealed like they did with her surname eventually.

Where's everyone getting the idea that Faith was older than Buffy?

I always got the impression, and believe I read somewhere, that she was a little younger, from a year to a few months...

Yeah, I pretty sure she's younger than Buffy too.

Well, I heard taht Joss said it, so I don't actually now.

I think theres a lot that leaves Faith true age quite murky, first off Buffy in "Faith, Hope & Tricks" calls her, "her bestest new little sister" which would make it feel like Faith is younger. Then later on Faith talks about how she dropped out of school and it can come across like shes already passed the age of actually having been at school.

Looks wise as well Faith can pass for both older and younger than Buffy, I personally just pressumed she was a little older.

.

Well, technically, Mayor Wilkins never gave up on Faith, either, even going so far as to make provisions for her extended medical care and the eventuality that she would come out of her coma. Granted, he was evil, but as said in Season 7, he was like a dad to her, probably the only one she had ever had.

Oh crap yeah I completely forgot about Mayor Wilkins really caring about her like that when she was in a coma, good observation.
Or perhaps her "Want, take, have" philosophy might be an indication that Faith wasn't above petty theft, though anything major would have been hard for her to keep concealed from the gang for long.

This has always been MY theory; that she stole to get by.

I don't think slayers get paid, cause it's a calling they're answering to.
I've wondered myself how Faith managed to get on by herself.
My theory is that she could be smart enough to coin people in one way or another.
It would make an interesting fanfic for sure 🙂

When was this mentioned? (I haven't watched season 3 forever.)
She mentioned it in "Faith, Hope and Tricks" when her and Buffy are fighting together for the first time and Faith said "My dead mother hits harder than that!". Then later on I think it was too Angel she said she wanted a puppy to love as her mum was too busy drinking. So from that its sort of indicated her mum really didn't care for her much and loved the bottle more. It all adds to Faith's mental state I think.

Thanks, now I remember.
It's usually been inferred by the fan base that Faith is younger than Buffy, by at least a year, a little less maybe. It was printed on Faith's wanted stat thing from the police in Angel that her birthday is December 14th, 1980 [I think everyone's generally guesstimated that Buffy's birthday is January 22nd, 1981, but I'm trying to remember the exact year off the top of my head and I might've messed it up]. I always assumed Faith was at least a year younger than Buffy, but I guess canon-wise she's a month older.

As far as her living on her own goes, I kind of feel the question is moot because whether or not Faith was lawfully able to live on her own makes no difference - she would've done it anyway, especially since after her Watcher was killed she didn't really have much of a choice.

I'm with the masses in assuming Faith stole to get by - nothing more than petty theft, or like White Avenger said, stealing whatever valuables she could get off the bodies of the demons she slew. She might've grown to enjoy it, but I get the impression that at first she did it out of necessity more than simple kleptomania.

Wasn't there a continuity error regarding Buffy's age? Several dates have been given/hinted at?

Yep, every Fuffy fic said she's younger then Buff. :P
First do slayers get paid? Because how is Faith paying for the crappy motel room and even eating? When she eats at B's house, she seems to be starving.

I'd say finances create the only inconsistencies in the Buffyverse.

For 100 years, where does Angel get his money? We see him buying blood and living in hotels and he's never had a job until Angel Inc.

Why wouldn't the Watcher's Council pay the Slayer? If they did, Buffy wouldn't have had to spend 50% of her time working menial jobs rather than fighting the Good Fight.

Faith's just in the same boat.

Actually, he barely got by during a lot of those years. But from the day Whistler came around and until Angel Inc., he seemed to manage fairly nicely on nothing.

You're referring to the 1970s-1990s. After he emigrated to America he was living in hotels until the 1970s, he punished himself back to the streets in the 1970s because he ate a dead human.

Unfortunately, Faith had it pretty hard at that point. Buffy or Giles for that matter didn't feel it was their resposibility to be responsible for her. And plus, Faith was never great at accepting help from anyone, anyway. I sort of think of her as a lone wolf, braving the world alone.
