Question About Faith

Why wouldn't the Watcher's Council pay the Slayer? If they did, Buffy wouldn't have had to spend 50% of her time working menial jobs rather than fighting the Good Fight.

Maybe they did plan on giving her money after her studies, but since she fired them, and later only accepted some help from them, they didn't. Hell, maybe she told them to stick their money where the sun doesn't shine.

But it is weird that we never saw The Council trying to convince her to get out of high school and do some full-time slaying. So they could control her better.

Isn't it pretty obvious that the council doesn't pay their Slayers? Slayers aren't the Council's employees like Watchers, they're its tool. The Council doesn't really care for their individual Slayers (
as seen when they tried to off Faith when she wasn't useful for them anymore
), only for the line to carry on.
I think we were supposed to assume that Slayers - and to an extent the Potentials as was the case with Kendra who was raised by her Watcher from a very young age - usually live with their Watchers (with Buffy being the exception to that rule), who get paid so there isn't an issue with the Watcher supporting their Slayer.

As for how Faith is able to support herself I think it might be a mix of Giles helping her out with rent and food - he does get paid as a Watcher and a librarian! - and her five finger discount for everything else she likes/wants. I can't really see her showing up for a 9 to 5 dayjob.

It was printed on Faith's wanted stat thing from the police in Angel that her birthday is December 14th, 1980 [I think everyone's generally guesstimated that Buffy's birthday is January 22nd, 1981, but I'm trying to remember the exact year off the top of my head and I might've messed it up]. I always assumed Faith was at least a year younger than Buffy, but I guess canon-wise she's a month older.

Thank you so much!
I knew I didn't just make it up, I was always somehow under the impression that Faith was about a month older than Buffy but I never knew where that came from. Which, of course, raises more questions: Why didn't Faith have her Cruciamentum shortly before Buffy other than the obvious story telling issue? She already was in Sunnydale when she turned 18 and - correct me if I'm wrong - it's always done on the Slayer's 18th birthday, right?

Oh, continuity error! I always get so excited when finding a new one.... yes, i'm a loser.

I don't think Faith would have ever acceppted help from Giles!

Maybe they didn't think she needed one or something because she was handling the slaying well on her own for a while. Or it did happen and it was just left out, I always thought that though after Buffy had her's especially if its a right of passage and what not.

Big continuity error though.

Maybe.....just maybe, she's a year younger than Buffy and then, she committed murder and doesn't have to do the 18-years-old test anymore because she's, like, fired. And I'm sure Joss wouldn't have missed this continuity thing because it's obviously big. Or maybe he didn't think about Faith's age a bit at that moment.

Everyone always wonders that, but I don't exactly see the point - Faith showed up in 'Faith, Hope, and Trick' [3.3] and Buffy's birthday was in 'Helpless' [3.12]. I wouldn't be wrong to assume Faith was just not quite eighteen when she arrived in Sunnydale. So her eighteenth birthday is a point of concern, but I always just assumed that a] the Watcher's Council pretty much sucked at keeping tabs on Faith [they weren't aware that she jumped ship in Boston and went to California] b] after the death of her Watcher and circumstances surrounding that [Kakistos etc.], I could actually foresee the Council being like, "Well, poor bitch's been through enough, so screw the test." That, and working out the logistics of two Slayers under the care of one Watcher was probably enough to confuse the lot of them at the time.

@ Skytte: Yea, they screwed up B's birthday on the show a lot, too. I remember an episode where she was drinking at the Bronze and it was before her 21st birthday - she had a stamp on her hand and everything. There would've been no way for her to get the stamp and drink in a public setting unless a] she had a really good fake or b] Willow or someone else charmed her past the bartender. These two scenarios don't make a lot of sense to me because I always figured Buffy wouldn't be down for the fake ID business, but you never know.

About buffy drinking in the bronze, that wasn't really a screw up, she could have just tried her luck and got in, its not like they're gonna id everyone, and buffy could possibly pass for 21

^ And if I remember correctly, in I, Robot...You, Jane, when Willow watches Buffy's profile, her birthday is far, far away from January 22. But I'm not sure if Malcolm messed it up or something.

Hey not sure how accurate wikia entertainment is. But it says that faiths birthday is December 14, 1980 and that buffys was born in 1981. so i guess faith is just a little bit older than buff.

EDIT: Just realized that someone already posted faith's bday. My bad guys lol

More confirmation is always nice.

I thought about it happening off-screen too but then Buffy should have known about the Cruciamentum as it was so close to hers. It seems unlikely that Faith would have kept that a secret because I can see her getting really pissed off about it.

Yes, they weren't aware that she left Boston but I'm pretty sure they still knew her birthday.

b] after the death of her Watcher and circumstances surrounding that [Kakistos etc.], I could actually foresee the Council being like, "Well, poor bitch's been through enough, so screw the test."

Really? Because I can't. Most of the higher ranks of the Watcher's Council didn't seem to think of their Slayers as human beings with feelings, so just didn't care that maybe Faith's first Watcher just dying would affect her aswell.
They always seemed to like their rules and protocols.

That, and working out the logistics of two Slayers under the care of one Watcher was probably enough to confuse the lot of them at the time.

Maybe it just got lost in the rubble with two Slayers under one Watcher is more likely though still unlikely if you ask me. She already was in town for some time.

Isn't it possible Faith already passed the test when her Watcher was alive, if she's older?

Technically, yes. If her birthdate on that file is wrong. Or the fanbase was always wrong about Buffy's birthday.

Where the 1981 came from is pretty obvious - (S5 spoiler)
her gravestone at the end of Season 5. I know there were a lot of continuity errors before but that was a pretty prominent shot so they wouldn't mess that up. I hope.
I think we have at least three different Buffy birthdates - two from "I Robot, You Jane" (October '79 and May '80, both show up within seconds when Malcolm looks at Buffy's file) and one from "Nightmares" (1981 - on Vamp!Buffy's gravestone), both S1 which fits with the spoilered one from S5.
There also was the Christmas episode "Amends" (3.10) which took place almost directly before "Helpless" (3.12), which hints more strongly towards Buffy's birthday late in January.

I think we can safely assume that the writers just never thought about Faith's birthday before the Angel episode, had to come up with one and just put that one down even though it doesn't really fit within continuity.

Bravo for taking in some of the comments on here I love how you've given a fair answer and a really good conclusion to this topic.

WOW. You go girl!
I'm assuming the Watcher's Council takes care of matters of money and travel. If you had thousands of girls around the world who need training, they have to send Watcher's to do that and if their living with the Watcher, they have to support them. Watchers get paid, so I'm assuming the council has to do something.

Hi! new here. I always thought Kakistos WAS Faith's Cruciamentum.

---------- Post added at 09:36 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:02 AM ----------

It's the test Slayers take when they turn 18 when they're stripped of their powers (Buffy had to take it in Helpless, Giles was fired from the Council for helping her)

HI :) Welcome! :) whats a cruciamentum?
Hmmm. Interesting theory. It would make sense, and her test also got messed up just like Buffys test. Although, i can't see them using a Master vampire for one of these tests.

It wouldn't really make sense to have a powerful vampire like Kakistos be part of the Cruciamentum. And why would Faith's watcher get killed by him?

I never thought Kakistos was particuarly powerful, not like The Master powerful. He was just huge, old and strong. Faith's watcher could have killed by him in exactly the same way that Kralik kidnapped Joyce. It wasn't part of the Council's plan but like Buffy's it might have gone wrong, he could have escaped or simply gone on his vampire instinct trying to kill everyone in sight?

I actually really like that Cruciamentum theory. It also works as a theory as to why Faith was so freaked out by him if she simply thought she wasn't strong enough to beat him.

Well Trick called him Master
I guess. It's true that it was weird to see Faith scared of him. Because there isn't many things that made her look afraid. But then... the thing that Giles injected to Buffy so she lose all her powers during the Cruciamentum, it would have been injected to Faith too. The question then would be, why would she be still afraid of him now that the weakening effects are obviously gone?

I actually meant to include something about that in the post above, lol. Maybe Faith didn't even know that's what had happened? Her Watcher could have been killed before being given the chance to explain why she was weak? It is a bit of a long shot, as I can't decide whether or not I'd expect the Watcher's Council to have told her. In theory they should have but at the same time I wouldn't be surprised if they hadn't.

Now I really wish the had been some mention of Faith's test. I wanna know! 😉

Because of the neglect of her childhood I assumed she became resourceful and got by on that; petty theft here and there being a significant component
