About 'Out of Mind, Out of Sight'.

I do not have any BtVS episodes that I don't like, but this has often been called the worst episode ever.

Why is that? Obviously it's not as mind blowingly awesome as say, THE BODY, but the worst episode? So anyone know why? I'm kind of blinded by my own insane naive love of all things BtVS.
 
I would say that this is not the worst episode! There are others that are far worse.

I actually don't mind it! The transformation that we see in Cordelia is showing us what will further happen to her in Angel.
 
i've never heard this! i have never heard Out of Mind Out of Sight called the worst episode.
has anyone?

I dunno i mean Out of Mind out of sight isn't exactly my favorite episode but i agree its not the worst... It was pretty good my only thing is we should have seen more of the girl i mean really
 
I like Out of Mind, Out of Sight. It was good to see Buffy and Cordy connect. It was the first time we had really seen Cordy open up, and we learnt that there was more depth to her character 🙂

Those episodes which focus on the Buffy-Cordelia relationship are very interesting.
I don't remember where I read it. 🙁 I think it was in "Seven Seasons of Buffy", that essay book, but I don't remember for sure. I have been Google-ing people's least favourite eps and it's werid to see what people say. Interesting though.
 
Saying it was "the worst episode ever" was probably an opinion of the original writer because whilst I've seen it appear on many lists of episodes that people think aren't so great it has never been voted the worst.

99% of the time that "honour" seems to go to either Go Fish or Doublemeat Palace.
 
Yeah, I just re-read the thing and the lady says it is "among the worst ever" not "the worst ever".

Wow, I feel like a pretty giant ditz for even beginning this thread.
 
I love this episode so much. Best one in season 1 and in my top episodes ever. But then I love Clea DuVall. I always thought her character should have come back or at least been mentioned again after what happened to her.
 
Questions/Comments about this episode:

Firstly, this is a great episode in terms of concept. The idea of having somebody invisible due to lack of attention and not a spell (or something else magical) is very brilliant.

The only problem I have with it is the story itself.
We are talking about a high school situation folks. Not everybody gets attention from everybody else. This disappearing act can very well have happen to many other folks as well.
And what about Marcy's home life before becoming completely invisible? It's much easier to get attention in your home than a high school since your home has at most 6 people in it and not 1,000!
Her home life should have offset her school life, eh?
 
not necessarily. we know nothing abot Marcy's home life. she may not have had the perfect parents and a bratty younger sister. maybe she was in foster care? maybe her parents were killed somehow (Which, given where they live is not impossible) and there was no one else to look after her, and so she flitted about from place to place, not really finding a home anywhere. being ignored by social workers, the people who are supposed to take care of her, and not having any friends at school would definitely have caused some invisibility issues.

and it was something magickal that caused Marcy to turn invisible. the power of the Hellmouth added to her feelings of invisibility and caused her to become so. if this was anywhere but Sunnydale, she would have remained clearly visible, but no less lonely.
 
i dont think that Out of mind, Out of sight is the worst ep. in my opinion i think that I robot, you jane is worse than that. but this is just my opinion..

Tough to pay for high school like that, eh?
She couldn't get a great job since she's still in high school (no diploma). She would need more than shifts at Doublemeat Palace.

Well here is what I take from this episode and how it explains your reason for finding problems.
First of all, we are on a Hellmouth. This is used to explain many an issue of the show. The mystical energy exemplifies this feeling of being 'invisible' to the point of becoming reality.

We also don't know much about this girls homelife, HOWEVER, we can assume that its not typical. She maybe an overlooked child of many, maybe her parent/s work hours that basically mean they never see her, adding to her 'no one is paying me any attention'. This is supported by the fact no one really misses her.
Even the teacher doesn't pay her attention, she is a nobody, nothing. Heck we 'see' her become invisible in a full classroom and no one says anything.

To add further to your point, you say 'We are talking about a high school situation folks. Not everybody gets attention from everybody else. This disappearing act can very well have happen to many other folks as well'.
Well if you remember how that episode ends, we 'see' that this DOES happen to others and has been a problem for a while. So you see, its not that there is a problem with the Story, just your personal understanding and acceptance mixed with your ability to think of possibilities.
We are talking about a world that has Vampires, Demons and other nasties, its not necessarily one that you can always perfectly equate to the real world.

it also was starting to happen to that other student in season 7. so, yeah, i guess it does happen to others, and as botd (whoa, i typed ddlm! :silly: ) said, they probably all go to that same place from this episode.
 
Out of mind, out of site was the first eppy I ever saw...so well I kinda like it.
 
This episode featured Clea DuVall as Marcie Ross. Not that we saw much of her of course, we heard her more than we saw her, lol. But since then, I think I would recognize her distinctive voice anywhere.

I remember the first time thinking that Marcie must have really been "invisible" to everyone if even the uncool Willow and Xander couldn't remember who she was.

CD has a recurring role in the current NBC series Heroes.

It's funny - I looked at her biography on imdb.com - according to them the actress herself did indeed have a hard time growing up, particularly through her high school years. She dropped out of school for a while. She went through a period of living by herself and earning her own income at an early age.
 
Invisible she was. I loved this episode, because it brought out a side of Cordy's character that we didn't see often(and that was later expanded in Angel)

And the fact that the feeling of being invisible is quite an issue with some highschool students(at the end of the episode makes this point clear) but in reality the idea of turning invisible is sort of hitting home for some teenagers who don't really get attention anywhere(which is one of Joss's many talents of bringing real components into a fantasy world)
