About The Upcoming Superman Movie

I, for one, remember and am a fan of the REAL Superman, the one that I grew up with, so I'm not particularly happy about this:

They did a butcher job on John Carter, one of my lifetime heroes, and now they're apparently going to do Superman the same way.

I've been reading Superman comics since I was a little kid, and so far, from what I've heard anyways, I have no issue with what Zach Snyder has done with the franchise. Just going off trailers and reports like everyone else obviously, but I've liked pretty much everything I've seen.

DC Comics recently did a massive, company-wide reboot of their comic line where they rearranged numerous characters and aspects of the DC comic universe. Superman was a big, big part of that rearranging, primarily because sales of his book had been in the toilet for a long time. Now, I'm a Superman fan and personally, I enjoyed his book, right up until the point that they relaunched it. However, I've been reading the new stuff as well (which seems much more in line with how Snyder is presenting Superman) along with Justice League, and it's awesome. Superman's powers are toned down a bit and he himself is quite a bit more reserved and isolated, but so far it's really working, especially in Justice League.

Plus, they haven't made a good Superman movie since the 70's. I don't have any issue with them switching things up.

Yeah, but I'm an ornery old man, set in my ways, and resistant to changes, especially in something that has been a tradition since even before I was born, whereas you're young and less entrenched in your ideas of how things "just oughta be." Wait another 40 years or so, and things might be different.

And I'll go even further back than the 70's. There hasn't been a REAL Superman since George Reeves committed suicide in 1959.

But ultimately, it's all just ranting on my part, since I don't read them anymore, anyhow. The Superman/Wonder Woman romance does seem interesting, however, though I can't help feeling sorry for poor Lois.

I'm looking forward to it. I think Zack Snyder's Watchmen was great and I think he's very capable of pulling off a great Superman movie. I don't really care much about Superman, anyway. However, I'm a little afraid that this movie will have Nolan written all over it. Besides the Batman movies, I don't really like his movies, and The Nolan-way isn't really how I want all superhero movies to be from now on.

Woah I don't fallow the Superman franchise at all (my least favorite super hero) but hearing that Snyder is making this, that guy made some of my all time favorite movies so that's a plus.

Now what's up with Superman not dating Lois, that I am not okay with!!

I'm sold completely on seeing this movie - if it's going to be good or not is another story, but I've loved all of the Zack Snyder movies I've seen (I haven't seen his Dawn of the Dead remake or the animated movie about the owls) - yes, even Sucker Punch. I love that movie and no one is going to convince me not to. And the early buzz on the movie is that it's really good, so that seems to be good news.

So yeah, let the movie happen. I'll be there to see it as soon as I possibly can.

I like the Superman/Wonder Woman romance a lot too. Lois Lane's place is still big in the Superman books (I'm reading all the Superman and JL titles right now), but her role has been retooled quite a bit. I'm sure, sooner or later, that romance will be rekindled but for now, I'm perfectly fine with them scaling it back. Clark and Lois were married, or heavily involved, for so long prior to the relaunch that it sort of prevented DC from exploring potential romantic relationships with other characters for Superman for like 20+ years.

And I should amend my previous statement a bit. I thought Tom Welling was an awesome, awesome Clark Kent in Smallville.

Right now there's two main Superman books, plus Justice League, where he's one of the main characters (and is, in my opinion, the best of the New 52 books). He's in "Superman" and "Action Comics", and I like them both a lot. He's not in "Superboy" at all (and take a pass on it, it's horrible), and I haven't read "Supergirl", so I'm not sure if he's in that, but she cameo's on "Superman" and kind of implies that he was in her book.

I'd give the two main titles and Justice League a shot. All three are very good, and the art is outstanding in all of them. I haven't read the Smallville comics though.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? I don't follow the Superman movies much (I was too much of a Smallville fan, Tom Welling ruined it for me...) but nobody can replace Lois. Nope. Not even Wonder Woman. I really don't like that idea.

The first seasons were good, but nowhere as good as S6-S10. You should watch them, though. Once you've started it, it gets quite addicting 😉

Oh see, I'm the exact opposite on Smallville. I always thought, kind of like Buffy, the heart of the show was the first three seasons. The Clark/Lex/Lana dynamic worked so well for so long. That was the best part of the series for me, the core three of them (I actually think the core of Smallville, in the early years, was better than the core Scoobies). Heck, I could never get into Lois. Not after Lana. To me, Lana will always be Clark's girl.

See, objectively the first seasons were probably the best (I love Clark and Lex's friendship, and I do think the show suffered somewhat from Lex's absence), but I just love the dynamic between Clark and Lois in the later seasons, as well as the introduction of other DC characters. Season 9 is probably my favourite in terms of the overall arc. One of my favourite episodes is "Homecoming" from season 10. I'm rewatching from season 5 at the moment. I don't like how they ended Lana's storyline in season 8. She wasn't my favourite character, but I think she deserved better than what she got.

I've been sitting on the fence for a long time regarding this film.

I'm a fan of Richard Donnar's movie, John Williams INCREDIBLE theme music and Christopher Reeve.

The idea of a gritty, sombre reboot just didn't feel right for Superman. Especially when you have someone like Zack Snyder in the directors chair.

But then this new trailer hit the net yesterday. And I have to say it's probably one of best movie trailers I've seen in a long time. It looks absolutely OSM!

I'm now sold. And the new theme tune ain't too bad either.....

Okay, first off, Superman WITH A BEARD? It was established from back in the 40's that Superman didn't have facial hair because it didn't grow under Earth's yellow sun, the same as the hair on his head, in order to solve the problem of "What does Superman use to cut his super strong hair?" I guess that the people at DC just didn't want to come up with any better an answer than that. Anyhow, if he DOES have a beard in the movie, the question becomes valid again. Bullets can't penetrate his skin, knives can't cut his flesh, but somehow scissors can cut his hair? Doesn't make a bit of sense to me.

And, once more I have to say, this actor just plain doesn't look like Superman to me. Superman is supposed to be ruggedly handsome, not boyishly pretty. This is supposed to be the greatest hero in the DC Universe. Villains are supposed to be filled with fear just at the mention of his name and the minions of evil are supposed to run in terror when he appears. This guy looks like he should be playing Robin or Speedy, or some other teenaged sidekick. Lex Luther is supposed to take this guy seriously? Please!

I feel like he's taking away all the good feelings I used to have watching a superhero movie. Where are those bad-joking-but-funny lines? Where are the villains that don't look so scary but can hold their own until the good guy comes? Where is the feeling all throughout the movie that the good guy will win? Because to me that's what a superhero movie is about. The good guy always winning, and me knowing it from the start.

Anyways, rant over. I just wanted to add that (from this trailer) it just seems to me like a bad remake of Smallville in movie format.... but that's just my opinion...

I think it looks awesome, I don't think comics work as movies, your can't directly translate a comic to a movie and expect it to work. Comics flipflop in their mythology and the comic audience are more accepting of zanyness then would work in a movie.

I'm not a superman fan so don't know the mythology but skin and hair are two different things, I don't see why skin not being pierceableand hair not being cut-able would be related.

You also think Cavill looks boyish? Did you watch the same trailer? if they'd cast someone in their early 20's, like Andrew Garfield from Spiderman, I'd see your point, but this guy is like 30. I got the impression they went with him because he looks anything but boyish, since they wanted to go with a grittier Superman.

That's artistic freedom. They can basically change anything they want about Superman. They don't have to follow any rules. In the Dark Knight trilogy they changed almost every character and it worked pretty well, in my opinion. I don't know about the beard thing, though. But I guess that's just a minor problem. Maybe he rips the hair from his face one by one with his super strength.
Anyway, I think you should just accept this new Superman movie. It's not like you have to watch it. But if you do, try to watch the movie as it is, and try not to focus on how it's different from what you want to see.

Totally agree. That's why I think The Avengers 2 is gonna be way better than the first one. Joss Whedon said the sequel will be a lot darker.
