About The Upcoming Superman Movie

In the comics, Superman would shave using his heat vision and a mirror made from a part of his space-craft. It always made me wonder if he shaved his man-garden using the same method? =/

And, once more I have to say, this actor just plain doesn't look like Superman to me. Superman is supposed to be ruggedly handsome, not boyishly pretty.

I will say this, at least Cavill looks like a MAN rather than some teen idol. There seems to be a few shots in that trailer where he's channelling Hugh Jackman's Wolverine.

One of the problems with Superman is that he is (almost) PERFECT. No human actor is ever going to be able to live up to that expectation physically. Superman also has the misfortune of being one the few superheros who doesn't wear a mask "“ you see his face all the time. It's a far more touchy subject for comic books fans than it is for superheros like Batman, Iron Man and Spider-Man "“ characters whose looks come down to design choices rather than physical appearance.

The best way to look at movie adaptations is to remind yourself that they are just interpretations.
I don't think that there has yet been a definitive Batman movie. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the hell out of The Dark Knight, its just that it wasn't MY idea of what Batman should be. I think Tim Burton came closest with his 1989 version.

You can't please all of the people all of time. But speaking as a miserable cynic, I'm genuinely surprised at how great this new Superman movie looks.
 
Source materials are ALWAYS changed in film and T.V. adaptations. Always. That doesn't immediately make it "bad". I mean, [MENTION=6758]white avenger[/MENTION], you said you liked John Carter! I certainly enjoyed it, and liked they way they designed Carter, even though he's different than his character from "A Princess of Mars". Smallville, I thought anyways, was excellent, even thought Clark is very, very different from the comic book versions of Superman (which themselves have shifted notably over the years).

Christopher Nolan produced an outstanding version of Bruce Wayne and Batman, but he does have differences from how he's strictly portrayed in the comics (and if there's a character DC Comics is careful about managing creatively, it's Batman. Unlike Superman and other heroes, the core elements of Batman hardly ever change in the comics). When I think of "Batman" in my head, I'm thinking of who I read about in the comics, but that doesn't mean I don't love the movies, or totally enjoy them and the character.

Look at Game of Thrones, adapted from the book series "A Song of Ice and Fire". It's strikingly different in a number of areas, and while the online fans routinely go nuts when the show changes a detail, I'm able to watch it as a fan and actually, enjoy it more.
 
I think if a franchise is to be sustained it has to be turned inside out and have the storytelling perspective changed. It doesn't mean it can't go back to the core story and themes, but successfully flipping the script brings a vigour to a story long thought played out. The more I watch these trailers to more I get a BSG reboot feel from it. Taking a story that has traditionally been on the lighter side and asking different questions of it and thus revealing depths it never knew it had. I really can't wait to see this.
 
I'm personally really looking forward to this movie for almost the exact opposite reasons some here have mentioned. I'm a huge comic fan, but I find Superman boring. He is too good, too perfect, too powerful. I much prefer Batman or Green Arrow. However, it looks like they are actually going to make Superman conflicted and interesting in this one as opposed to perfect. In fact the only time I've really like Superman is when in Grant Morrison's really Action Comics run of the New 52 when he had Superman acting as a crusader for the poor, fighting against the corrupt rich and powerful. That was a million times more interesting than the normal perfect version we get so much of.

Good point about the Warlord, and I will admit that in retrospect I was so thrilled o see the Warlord finally come to the big screen that I was willing to overlook the considerable rebooting that the character underwent. And, like the literary version of Superman, NO ONE could ever measure up to Burroughs' ultimate hero. Probably, that is the main reason for the changes that we almost always see when an actor tries to portray a character as well known as Superman. Still, from the little that I've seen in the limited trailers, this guy just looks too soft to portray the Man Of Steel.

I'll give the movie a look, of course, and just hope that I'll be proven wrong.

I feel like he's taking away all the good feelings I used to have watching a superhero movie. Where are those bad-joking-but-funny lines? Where are the villains that don't look so scary but can hold their own until the good guy comes? Where is the feeling all throughout the movie that the good guy will win? Because to me that's what a superhero movie is about. The good guy always winning, and me knowing it from the start.

Anyways, rant over. I just wanted to add that (from this trailer) it just seems to me like a bad remake of Smallville in movie format.... but that's just my opinion...

Christopher Nolan is the producer. Zack Snyder is the director

Anyway, Nolan also wrote the story together with David S. Goyer, who also wrote Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. So I guess it will be a lot Nolan-like.
