If you look at the size of those things as compared to the demon who supposedly laid them, they seem way, WAY too large. Also, the things that hatched out of the eggs showed no similarity to mama. Do I smell a frame here? It would certainly fit in with Riley's hatred for Spike and his threat to kill him if he ever tried anything with Buffy. He would probably think it would be more ironic if he could trick Buffy into dusting Spike rather than doing it himself.

Does anybody out there get the idea that Riley just ain't my favorite Buffyverse character?

Huh, I never really noticed that before, but you have a point. Plus I'll take any reason to update my personal loathing of Riley =] 😛

I assumed they were Svolte larvae. Most larvae don't look much like the insects they'll grow up to be. But you have a point about egg size . . . that poor thing must have been REALLY fat before laying them (hm . . . it did have sort of saggy skin . . . leftovers from the pregnancy from hell?) and in a LOT of pain when they came out.

kiwis lay really big eggs in comparison to body size, admittedly only one but still nature has ways of working these things out so demons would be no different. Not that i want to throw cold water on your Reilly the rat, framer of Spike theory - i love that idea and could so see him doing it!! 🙂 I so would have loved to see Reilly's face when he finally got the message that Buffy wanted information/help with Spike's misfiring chip in 'The Killer in Me' - that would have been delicious and priceless.

I never noticed that 😀 haha! But yea they do seem a bit too big, but I'm not an expert on egg size and things that lay them so I'm clueless!

*coughparaniodcough*.....Spike admitted that he was The Doctor and that he was resposible for the eggs in the ep. I'm not a Riley fan but the boy didn't set him up.

YES! Spike was framed!! *blsuhes* that was kinda loud, wasn't it? lol

something always seemed a little off to me with the whole Riley/demon/Spike/The Doctor thing. not that i'm saying Spike wasn't The Doctor, it was just...i don't know. off. :lmao:

EXACTLY!!!
It did kind of seem out of character for him, didn't it? Almost like a too-convenient excuse to wrap everything up and make Buffy quit sleeping with him? I'm not saying Riley framed him; I believe Spike did it. But I think the writers fumbled on this one.

It was very random alrite...they passed it off as the kinda thing Spike did all the time but I don't remember him doing ANYTHING like that before?

i think it was just an excuse to get the whole Spike/Buffy thing over with before the end of the season.

maybe it's the Spuffy in me talking, but i don't believe Spike would have done anything like that at that point in time. he was trying to get Buffy to be with him, permenently. would he really risk going behind her back and doing something so stupid, knowing that she would find out about it?

question, though...did Spike ever actaully admit that he was the Doctor? 'cause i can remember him telling Riley to stop calling him that. and he continues to admit, even after they found the eggs, that he was holding them for a friend, which, admittedly, is a very Spike thing to say, but it could be true, especially if he didn't know to keep the eggs frozen. if Spike was really The Doctor, he would have been given better instructions, i'm thinking.

Spike has a history of doing the wrong thing for the best of reasons, though. He'd already offered to get Buffy money so she wouldn't have to work. Maybe he was trying to do just that with this little scheme?

I always thought that was his motivation. I mean, why else would Spike need money? This gig was cleary a for profit gig, whereas Spike's always done stuff just for fun.

That's what i always figured too
I think if Spike wasn't the Doctor and Riley was there making him look bad infront of Buffy he would have denied it vehemently. Can't see him taking the blame for something he didn't do, especially somthing Captain Cardboard was accusing him of.

Spike and the Doctor

*coughparaniodcough*.....Spike admitted that he was The Doctor and that he was resposible for the eggs in the ep. I'm not a Riley fan but the boy didn't set him up.

Actually, Miss K, if you'll check the dialog in that particular scene, you'll see that Spike NEVER admitted being the Doctor. The only thing that he ever admitted to was "keeping them for a friend," referring, of course, to the eggs. Now, THAT, I can see Spike doing much more readily than being an international demon terrorist, especially one named the Doctor after his, Buffy's, and Dawn's experience with the demon Doc only a few months before.

The whole Suvolte thing was just too convenient and over with too quickly. If the eggs and their contents were so valuable and so important to the demon world, there should have been someone coming to check on the consignment when the product wasn't delivered on time. People, or demons, who deal in such things seldom just sigh philosophically and walk away with a sad smile on their faces. They can't afford to.

Obviously, this was a tool used by the writers to break up Buffy and Spike, but it wasn't a very well thought out one. Spike JUST WOULDN'T DO something like that. He might frighten little girls out of their money in dark alleys, but the Suvolte thing was just too complicated for him to bother with. Unlike Buffy, I don't think he was too stupid to do it, I just think he would've found a much less complicated scheme than luring a demon to the hellmouth to spawn, harvesting its eggs, finding the appropriate demon terrorists who would be interested in them, store the eggs (frozen of not), then calmly (well, not calmly) boff the Slayer upstairs while the payload was downstairs. And for that matter, what's with our Slayer? There's a perfectly comfortable bed downstairs just begging to be missed, and she wants to get her jollies on a nasty uncomfortable old sarcophagus? Come on, now. Our girl likes her creature comforts available, even if she never quite makes it to them.

And how is it that Riley just happens to show up at the exact post coital moment that the eggs start spewing little spider things, NOT little Suvoltes, all over the place, armed with an assault rifle and a belt full of incendiary grenades? And where is Sam, who left Buffy to go find her errant husband, allowing the whole Buffy/Spike thing to get most pleasantly out of hand in the first place?

There was definitely a plot here, quite likely a second rifleman, and most definitely a magic bullet...

No, wait a minute, skip that last part. My point is, it was just too convenient an chain of events to be anything but plotted out for the express purpose of splitting Buffy and Spike up.

Now I know what Spike felt like when he was trying to tell the Scoobies that Glory and Ben were one and the same person.

I don't have all of the answers, either, but you ask the right questions. I agree that something was definitely fishy (or poorly planned) when it comes to this episode.

very well thought out and put i think!

I repeat...*coughparanoidcough*...

Seriously though I agree with it being out of character for Spike, the plan was just a little too hairbrained. However, I'm still not convinced it was a set up.

And another thing: Straight laced, church going (regular attendance. Every Christmas and Easter, when he's near one), all American corn fed Iowa boy Riley, who never said a single word of profanity during his entire time on the show refers to Spike as "Ass Face" in Season 7? Married life musta ruined the boy!

If Spike was lying about "holding them for a friend," then I think it must have been a for-profit deal for the express purpose of helping the financially strapped Summers girls.

All in all, though, I think it was a poorly concocted plan. I liked having Riley come back. I just wish they'd thought of a better way to break up Buffy and Spike. It could have had something to do with Riley, sure. But this? This was just too weird and out of character. NOT my favorite episode.

I think the guy that pays vamp whores to feed off him has earned the right to say 'Ass Face', (which by the way is a pathetic attempt at provanity anyway!).

Lol. Good point.
lol, It justs shows how much he changed in other ways than his marriage 😛 ^ what else would he call the guy who took Buffy away from him.
I'm sure I would have said much, much, worse, even if I was happily married.
