About Virtual Season 8

This thread is for all ideas. Actually, it was started to tell people about it, and nobody ever started a new thread to actually talk about it lol

My post was actually in response to previous posts (not Dariodevil's) - we need to decide as a group how it should be done. I just don't want only a few people to be able to participate in this - everyone who wants to should be able to contribute in some way. Having one person doing all the writing is not the point - if we were going to do that, I'd just write it myself lol.

Buffy is bitten by a werewolf. No long, drawn-out explanation - just The Slayer with full moon fever. This would allow Oz to either be introduced, or maybe take center stage to help Buffy control it. Obviously, this wouldn't be a permanent thing, but perhaps a three-episode arc.

Love this idea.

I think you could work it out so there is a main plot arc...but everyone who wants to try to contribute can.

I think there should be a screening process for the "Josses" and then let everyone who wants to be a Joss who has passed the screening (to see if they are up for it, have experience (not important though), can work with others, wont be biased, etc) post all their story arc ideas then have people vote on the story arc they want.

Then the episodes could flow smoother, and everyone would still get the same opportunity to submit stories they would have before...now with just more of a structure and goal.

Ohh a Virtual Season 8. Me likes....a lot. ^_^ I'm gonna need something to wile away the summer months anyway.

*pokes DD with long, pointy stick and runs away*

Love the Lilth idea. Due to my searing hate of season six I'm not sure about the human enemy dealey. But it could be interesting if it was worked right.

I like the idea of there being a few people that oversee the entire arc of the season and go over episodes and such. Like Joss. Or Josses in this case. Wow now I'm imagining a group of Josses sitting around a table arguing with each other. It's scary in my brain. It doesn't mean that anyone who wants to participate can't, it just would mean that they'd have to clear certain things with the main group first, mostly before bringing in major plot points or character development. This way everyone stays on the same page and the season has the magic of continunity.

^_^ Yup so those are my two cents. Or three cents. Whatever 🙂

I won't have time to write full scripts. I can just give ideas. I think the Josses idea is good.

I'm not sure how many people have done anything by committee before, but for those of you who haven't I think I can give you some foreshadowing of what happens when it doesn't work.

What can happen is a group of people get together with a common objective. They all have ideas, and good intentions. They begin to discuss the project at hand and the conversation inevitably degenerates into niggling, nitpicking over details that don't really matter. The more important issue of organizing the matter into a cohesive whole gets split into bits and lost. In short, it doesn't work.

What does work is if a small group of 2 or 3 gets together and forms a cohesive framework structured to allow others to contribute.

The suggestions above seem to be doing that. They are workable suggestions. The question would be, how are you going to actually convert them into reality? I can pretty much promise you once you submit them to the myriad voices of a larger group, they will be diluted and washed away into a sea of dissenting opinions from individuals with independent opinions.

It will go something like this: You'll want to discuss how to organize the planning of the project. The conversation will degenerate into what the arc should look like. You'll compromise. You'll choose to discuss how to structure the arc. They'll want to argue whether you should bring back Oz or Tara.

Here's the question. How do you avoid that problem?

I think collaboratively, we come up with a basic storyline for the season, including a big bad, and then give everyone a chance to write and episode based on the storyline, and continuing with the character development from the last 7 seasons! 🙂

I think that this is an ace way of doing it!

nerd4hire - I love the way you think....mostly. One objection I have to say though is that I think that the kind of arguing you are talking about is necessary or unavoidable. You are never going to be able to do something like this without there being some hurt feelings and a bit of petty arguing. I'm sure Joss and co. argued all the time. I think the arguing about "little stuff" is what made Buffy great. Every little thing was analyzed to death so it was perfect when it got on paper and then the screen. I think that our season 8 should be no different. Let the people discuss Oz or Tara to death, because if they don't, then someone is going to make a random decision, and I think in doing that everyone loses because it isn't the best virtual season it could possibly be.

Don't get me wrong.I'm a big fan of arguing, that's why I never get anything done. That's also why I fancy myself kind of an expert on the subject. No-one can "not" get something better than I can.

Strange, but I read an interview with Joss where he was discussing this very thing. It was some time ago I read it, so I can only paraphrase from a weak memory, but basically he was answering the question "What's the biggest thing you learned from doing Buffy".

He answered he learned how to recognize when it was time to take charge of the scripts and storyline from the writers, and point them towards his vision.

In other words he was saying a group of writers needs a single unified vision, and there were times when he had to be a bad guy to provide it.

Hey, don't blame me. He said it, I didn't.

Thus, we need moderators to give us a structure, and then we fill in the details. The mods should be our Producers, essentially.

How to organise?

The question is who will moderate.

Being a newbie i don't want to impose too much but how about we have people put in their key ideas for season 8 and then people vote on what seems the most popular.

The winners will be the moderators, each with two ideas that will be added together to make 10 key points and these will be explored throughout the season.

In recap:
2 key ideas, 5 moderators, 10 key points you vote!

Doesn't the whole Lilith idea sound kind of "Master"ish? Not necessarily a bad thing, but still...

I SAY WE MAKE A DECISION AND START THIS ALL READY. 😀

Oh, and DK... Lilith's got biblical ties, meaning she one-ups The Master. Just saying. But yeah, it is slightly derivative. Everything is, to a certain extent. The Master looked like Count Orlock from Nosferatu, for example.

You have some good ideas and you seem serious Dariodevil, so I'm going to help you along with the offer of advice.

The possibility of this project coming to fruit by committee as outlined at this point is unlikely. I think if you observe the progression of this thread you can see what happens. Structure dissolves into bits.

In order to actualize this idea, it will be necessary for someone, or some small group of someone's to take responsibility for it. Here's a suggestion. Choose to be the someone.

Scan this thread and the other one. Look for the two people that seem the most serious about the project. PM them and discuss how best to proceed. Open another thread, and simply begin. From here you can recruit others to join and work within the structure you are creating.

As you said before, this is a large undertaking. I'm not sure everyone understands that. There is a lot of room for anyone to participate who wants to, though. First of all someone has to show them how.

Thank you, N4H. I didn't want to step up due to fear of being branded arrogant or garnering any kind of negative reaction from others who want to be involved... but you're right. Someone does have to step up and get this party started.

Anyone who is SERIOUS about contributing ideas, scenarios, and writing or co-writing actual scripts, please P.M. me. Do NOT pitch ideas, there will be time to play idea tennis later, in an organized fashion. Please let me know what you feel your strengths are, and how much you can contribute to the project. This is open to anyone and everyone who wants to contribute, I do not play favorites, and I will NOT be playing dictator. I want to set up a group of Virtual Producers, and work in tandem with a team of Writers. Everyone's voice will be heard.

I will be in touch.

See, but is this the right thing for us to be doing right now? I think nerd4hire has the right ideas...but I think it's rather pretensious for just a few people to step and say "Hey we are in charge now" because even if they do have great ideas and concepts, this wasn't originally their idea. If the Mods wanted to do that I'm fine with it. But just a group of posters saying "Hey, we are the best we are now the producers and running the show" just seems wrong.

I think there should be a vote...or time. I mean, Buffy's over guys. We don't have to rush anything. It'll still be over tomorrow and there will still be room for a virtual season 8 the day after that. I think we should take time, see the ideas, put the producers to a vote, then go from there.

Because what you guys want seems like it's going to create anarchy. Everyone is going to go off into their own little groups and create their own stuff. Which is cool and everything. But it strays to much from the original concept and I think it'll leave out a lot of the shyer people that want to contribute...like me 😉

I agree with you about the pretention (sp?), but my fear is that this will turn into a debate about doing s8, rather actually doing it. I don't want to create little groups. What I want to do is organize a team of Producers to oversee and regulate the ideas, a team of Writers to script them, and make the overall project open to anyone and everyone willing to contribute.

See, but I haven't seen anyone yet debating over whether to do it or not. Basically people have been discussing on the best way to go about it. It's like football. You don't send a bunch of players on to the field without planning out the play first. We have to do that. Plan it out, see what works best. Because it would really really suck if we got going with one idea only to find out half way that just about everyone hates it because the average Mary Sue can't contribute or that the Mods don't like how it's going, or other such stuff that would force us to call it quits mid play.

Everyone wants to do it, no one knows how. I am presenting a way for us to do so. I am open to any all ideas on the subject, including alternate ways to go about this, organize this, etc.. I just want to be part of the team.
