Actually True to Continuity!

Okay, since Joss story-boarded After the Fall (plotted the Arc) I trusted that it would stay true to the series, but reading some recent interviews I just found out that AtF is pretty much exactly like S6 was supposed to be.

I knew that he had planned to vamp Gunn and play the Jekyl/Hyde act with Illyria, but overall I thought the "city of LA in ruins" "post-apocalyptic" world situation was done due to the new format, but I was completely wrong. Even in older interviews dating years back, Joss & D. Fury stated that they wanted pretty much exactly this for season 6. They were making plans early into season 5 that "Not Fade Away" should lead into a post-apocalyptic S6:

David Fury interview from 5 years ago: The really cool thing about Season 6, we knew how Season 5 was going to end very early on and we knew what it was going to launch into with Season 6, which was a post-apocalyptic show [and] which I thought was going to be great. It was going to be Angel in The Road Warrior, which I thought would be awesome. In the ruined city of LA.

I just thought that was cool

Not so much, really. They already had the Wolfram & Hart set. Just add a little wreckage, and it would have worked fine. There are enough demolition sites and shut down warehouses and office buildings in the LA area to take care of what apocalyptic scenery that they would need, with the help of some back lot sets. They could even have made the sly all distorted with special lens filters. The dragon would have been the only real problem, and it could have either been not used at all or done with miniatures and computer graphics. The scale might not have been quite so grand, but it would have been within the realm of possibility.

Well, that's true, but Andrew's right in that it would have most certainly been the most expensive Buffyverse season.

I just thought of one change, Joss said that Wes was supposed to survive the battle with Vale, but he & Alexis decided to kill him since the series was ending, so no ghostly liaison duties for the Rogue Demon Hunter.

If they needed one, I imagine Lindsey or Eve would have gotten the job.
 
I wonder... if Joss & Co. told the network what they planned to do in S6, might budget fears have been the deciding factor in cancelling the show?

One thing that bothered me about the S6 comics re: Wes, is that he obviously signed one of W&H's soul-binding contracts. After seeing first-hand what happened to Lilah, and even trying unsuccessfully to destroy her contract and free her... why would he sign one himself? Did all of the AI people sign them? If so, why?

I would think if you're going to work for a bunch of demons with the aim of destroying them from within... signing your soul over to them is probably not the smartest M.O.

It's not like the Senior Partners had any leverage to force them to sign contracts. They're the ones that had to convince Angel & Co. to take the jobs, after all.

Yeah, good point. I guess maybe Angel, Wes & co. signed like 20-year employment contracts (and W&H have a unique way of enforcing them, lol). And Lilah just simply signed her soul over to W&H...? Only answer I could think of.

That would be an interesting explanation... you sign a contract for a finite term, but that term is "alive or dead."

I remember that was a major factor in it getting cancelled. They already cut the shows budget in half and Joss probably wouldnt cut anymore. But it certainly wasnt cancelled due to ratings.

That might have contributed, but according to Joss & David Fury it would have been renewed if Joss didn't give the ultimatum that they early renew it or cancel it.

Which may sound like a jerk move, but it was supposedly done so that the writers would have time to get jobs for the next year in case it was canceled.

Anyway, the exec who did cancel it was soon fired and his replacement said that canceling the show was a huge mistake and that he wished he could take back.

Given what you pointed out that's the only explanation I can think of. Wes is too smart, grounded and well informed to sign away his soul.
 
Going even father afield with speculation... wouldn't Harmony still be under contract then?

Could Harmony be working for W&H right now... either knowingly or unknowingly?

And could that mean Twilight = W&H? Is the person in the Twilight suit one of their "ghost" operatives? Lindsey? Wes, even? Does the suit enable him to manipulate things physically? Would that explain why Twilight seems to have so much inexplicable influence and so many wide-ranging contacts?
 
Who knows how they handle their lower employees. And Harmony was hired by Wes if I remember so it may have been a totally new and different contract from the one that the Fang Gang signed.

I don't know what kind of contracts the clerical workers would have to sign. I imagine they'd be required to sign something, though, considering the sensitive information they have access to. W&H would insist on having some reliable way of controlling and/or punishing them.
