Here's a perfect example of one of those stray that pop up late at night.

Assuming that Spike had survived the battle, how was he expected to escape? It was broad daylight, little or no shade anywhere, and it was clearly shown that there wasn't any area on the bus blacked out for him, even if he managed to reach it. That was probably just an oversight by Joss, but story-wise, it could have worked out as a great second attempt by Giles and Wood to get rid of him, particularly seeing as how that was a school bus, obviously procured by the high school principal, since he would have presumably have the easiest access to the ignition keys.

Honestly, I think we should just replace the title "Chosen" with "Oversight" and call it a day. Almost everything that happened in that episode was a reach, or made no sense, or shouldn't have been, or easily couldn't have been.
Don't get me wrong, I like the episode a lot, and Spike's sacrifice is one of the greatest moments of both series. But so much didn't make sense!

The funny thing about "Chosen" is that despite it being nonsense full of plotholes, it's actually still an enjoyable episode and a great end to the show.

Spike had to stay in the hellmouth and watch the final curtain call for the hordes of demons (maybe at the end of Angel he could have said, been there, done that).
But by watching the end of the hellmouth, it gave closure to the series. Plus dying in the process meant he had a fun thing to chat about when popped up in Angel.

Spike could have covered up with his coat. He did that when they first arrived. But it has to be remembered that in the early morning, it was most likely that the morning shadows helped considerably in the trip from Revello Drive to the school. The sun would have been higher after the battle, more direct, with much fewer shadows. Also, as we have seen in the past, even when vampires are covered by blankets for extended periods, direct sunlight makes the blankets begin to smoulder pretty quickly. Extended exposure, as in a bus driving across the desert, would have most likely made Spike's leather trench coat react the same way, meaning that he wouldn't have been protected for very long.

Of course, Buffy could have had him lie down on the bus floor in the back and shielded him from the sun by covering him with her body, maybe with Faith helping. Yeah, I like that image. Two Slayers on top of one vampire while one Watcher dies of apoplexy. Perfect.

the most logical thing I can think of is that he would be sitting on the floor away from the windows with his coat overhead for protection from the light. I don't think he would be laying down, since the back of the school bus has that door with a huge window. So he would have to sit facing forward crouching underneath his coat. I'm pretty sure with everything that was going on, no one thought about covering the windows for Spike, But I'm sure Faith and the others would've huddled around Spike and made sure he was ok from the sunlight. If he was huddled underneath a his coat, Faith also had on a jacket (she could've given it to him for more protection) I don't see how he would burst into flames if the direct sunlight isn't touching him.

Do school buses in America have baggage compartments at the side of the bus, they do here.
If they do, Giles would have told Spike he'd be safe from the sunlight in one of them.
Although, I can't guarantee the driver wouldn't have hit every cat's eye or pothole he could find.

Commercial buses like Greyhound and Trailways have baggage compartments, but your typical school bus has, at best, an open space where the two rearmost seats have been removed for the specific purpose of carrying luggage and essentials on extended class trips.But, as was pointed out, there is an abundance of glass in that area.

But all that's moot now. I'm sticking with the image of Buffy and Faith covering Spike with their bodies, still all sweaty and breathing hard from the battle. Yeah, that is definitely what would have happened. And the image of Giles having a terminal fit of apoplexy while it happens is just icing on the cake.

ooh, the image of Faith and Buffy on top of Spike would not have brought on that feeling of apoplexy in Giles. But it may have brought back (happy?) memories of when (see the episode Buffy VS. Dracula) the 'three brides' of Dracula 'attacked' Giles.
