Said this before, but I think Burton's downfall was when he became too celebrated as a filmmaker and studios gave him excesses of money, and the result became overly stylised and cold films. When he had his neiche in the 80s and 90s he barely put a foot wrong. Again its worth remembering that Carolaine Thompson wrote the screenplays for much of his best work.

I could but I wont because I know what the responses will be. I have made mention of them before and people tell me that I don't understand why he is a good director. I am not going to beat my head against the wall. I think he's a poor director and the majority of his movies suck.

This thread is about a movie he did not direct.

One reason is that he fails to get good performances out of capable actors.

I like Johnny Depp as much as the next person, but I think Burton relies on him too much. It's become a stale partnership. Yes, Burton has not directed this one, but his fingerprints are all over it, because it's visually and tonally so similar to the original Alice movie he did direct.
