I love to hear others opinions, and since I never get to discuss Buffy/Angel with anyone in my day to day life, I am going to bring to the buffy community here!

So, I would love to hear everyone's thoughts/views on all the different ships (AtS included), why you like or dislike a certain ship.

I am interested in all ships that you care about about.
Bangel, Spuffy, Ruffy(lol), Sprucilla, Dangel, Cangel, Frunn, Fress, Wes+Lilah, Tillow, etc. Whatever ships speak to your heart (good or bad) I would love to know your thoughts on the rich and beautiful relationships in the buffyverse. 🙂

Ooo, this sounds fun 😛 Keep in mind that these are my own opinions, and I'll try not to offend anyone. There might also be a few spoilers, so just a heads up if you haven't seen all of them. 🙂

'Ships I Support

As anyone can tell from the tag underneath my username, I'm a Bangel fan 😀. I've been in love with the 'ship since I started watching the show. They are personally my favorite TV show ship (along with Piper/Leo. Charmed addict 😛), and I write alot of fanfic about them.

In the Buffyverse, my second favorite ship would probably have to be Willow/Tara or Tillow for short. I actually didn't like this ship when I first started watching S4, but it's grown on me, and I actually prefer it now to Willow/Oz (Not saying that I don't still support that ship. Just not as much as I use to). I have yet to write anything for this ship, but I'm just waiting for my muses to get themselves in order.

I also like Xander/Anya on a smaller level, but its nothing I would really write for.

'Ships I Tolerate

Spike/Drusilla. Eh, I'm not crazy about them as characters, but I'm not saying I hate them.

Angelus/Darla. Again, not crazy, but I don't hate them.

Ships I Don't Support

Spuffy. I. Despise. This. Ship. So. Fracking. Much. I can see Spike as being Buffy's friend, but as someone she loves? No. After he tried to rape her (an act which I consider completely unforgiveable), and made her feel like she hadn't come back from Heaven right? Nope, sorry, that is NOT going to fly.

Cangel. I can at least stand reading or seeing this, but its nothing I would ever ship myself with a fanfic. Angel is Buffy's soul-mate. Clear and simple. I will settle for nothing else.

Bangel: This, to me, is my favorite relationship on any T.V. show or movie ever. I know not everyone is crazy about Bangel, and that's fine, but it's just about perfect to me. I found watching the series, I just lived and died with Buffy and Angel. Maybe because I've always identified with both of them so much, but everything they did struck a chord with me. The way Angelus was worked in was some of the best television I've ever seen. And on a pretty personal level, if you take away the whole "going evil" part, having a relationship like that with someone like Buffy would finally give me some peace.

Spuffy: People always say you can't be both a Bangel and a Spuffy, but I am 🙂. From S5 on, I was pulling for Spike big time. It was obviously very different from Bangel, but thas't fine. I mean, it's hard not to like Spike, and throughout the ups and downs of his relationship with Buffy, I was always into it. You know what I liked best about Spuffy? That they shouldn't be together. Spike is totally in love with her, but she doesn't love him back, or at least, not in the same way. And that isn't a criticism. The ending to Spuffy is one of my favorites ever.

Ruffy: Not a fan. I didn't like Riley, I found him boring. He just couldn't follow up Angel. Every time, especially after "I will remember you", that he was with Buffy, I just kep thinking that should be Angel. Although, to be fair, I liked the way he left.

Sprucilla: Awesome. By far the funniest couple of either series. I really liked Spike and Drusilla. I just wish we saw more of Dru. "You can't see the stars love. That's the ceiling. And it's day."

Dangel: I found them really interesting. I certainly wasn't rooting for them, but it was really drawing to see the history they had. I never believed that Angel loved her though, but that he wanted to save her, and by extension save himself. That was the best part of Dangel to me.

Cangel: I'm also a Cangel. After Buffy and Angel, Cordy is probably my favorite character of either series (although Spike is up there too). I thought the way that she became the absolute soul of AI was very cool to see, and she never lost her humor. I have a tough time describing Cangel. On the one hand I don't think that Angel loved her as much or with the same passion as he did Buffy, but I don't think that he ever had a truer friend than Cordy. I wanted them to get together though. I think that Cordy might have been Angel's favorite person ever, and vice-versa.

Frunn: I thought they were fine. Nothing special, but that was the point of them. They were a nice, normal couple (or well, as normal as they could be). It was nice to see a romance that wasn't an epic, end-of-the-world affair.

Fresley: I LOVE Fresley. It's the saddest ship', bar none. At least with Bangel we got to see how happy they were together. With Wes and Fred, that only happened for one episode. The way Fred dies is so heart-wrenching. And the transformation Wes goes through, and the way he latches onto Illyria, was so sad but so powerful. And his death, where Illyria lies to him? I cry every time.

Wes+Lilah: I think this was a great ship' for Wes' character development. I think he cared for Lilah, or grew too, but it was clear as day that she wasn't who he wanted. And I think that Lilah loved him.

Woz: Everyone loves Tillow, but I've always been an Oz guy. To me, Oz is always the one for Willow. I love the early seasons, and there was such a sweet innocence to Willow and Oz (a lot like Bangel and Xander+Cordy) that I've always had a soft spot for.

Xander+Cordy: I was surprised initially how much I liked them together. When they get together (which may have been the best "get together" scene ever), I still wasn't a huge fan of Cordy (that sure changed), but the little things were done so well to show that she really did love Xander. When Buffy's in the hospital for example, Xander and Cordy fight and she storms out. But the next scene she comes back to sit with him and brings donuts. Loved it.

Coyle: This is the one ship' I always wanted to go longer. Doyle was the man, and his crush on Cordy was awesome. It's funny, for as much as I love Cangel, I always think of Cordy with Doyle. And the way it ended, Doyle's "I guess we'll never know" speech, that was as good as any death I've ever seen, right up there with Wes and Jack from LOST.

To me, the best part about Buffy and Angel are the relationships. All of them, even the ones I didn't touch on, like Lindsey and Darla or Giles and Jenny, are the product of some of the best characters in T.V. history. Even the minor characters have remarkable depth to them.

Favorite Ships:

Bangel- My favorite ship in Buffyverse and probably the first ship I was ever a really big fan of ever. To this day they are one of my favorite TV couples. I adore how their love for one another is constant no matter how much distance is between them. They just fit.

Briley- Buffy and Riley are my second favorite Buffyverse couple. 🙂 I seriously love Riley! He was a really good boyfriend who later turned into an awesome friend to Buffy.

Ships I enjoy:

Cordy/Xander- Popular girl falls for the dorky boy. They were a really sweet couple; remember Cordy talking to the fish when she thought it was Xander....how can you not adore these two together?!

Fred/Gunn- It was sweet watching the two of them interact; it was sad to see them end on such a bad note.

Willow/Oz- "Who is that eskimo?" Could Willow and Oz have been any cuter?

Wesley/Lilah- They sorta remind me of Spuffy....but I like them a lot more. I always found both characters more interesting when they were together. It was also nice to have a not so sweet romance going on.

Darla/Angel(us)- Ultimate bad-ass vamp couple. Later they had a neat dynamic once she was brought back by W&H.

Ships that could have or should have been:

Cordy/Angel- I'll always love them as BFF's first and foremost, but I do think they had potential for a while right after Connor was born and Cordy was helping Angel out with him. I think if the writers handled the couple differently they could have worked out for a while.

Gwen/Gunn- So much potential with these two!

Cordy/Doyle- They were cute, it would have been interesting to see where they would have gone.

Ships I could live without:

Spike/Buffy- I liked their dynamic for a little bit when Buffy opened up to Spike about being in heaven, but other than that there wasn't to much I enjoyed about the couple. One of my biggest problems with the ship is that I've never really felt like Spikes affections toward Buffy were truly heartfelt or established. I always saw them more as temporary love. A love hard and be loyal until you just don't anymore type of situation.

Willow/Xander- Uggh, I didn't like these two at all. They had significant others who genuinely cared about them...I just don't understand why Willow would risk everything with Oz to kiss some boy who didn't look twice at her for all those years she was fawning over him, he clearly only wanted her once someone else wanted her....nothing sweet or special about that.

**None of the other ships left me with any strong feelings.

A note to the friends that I have made on here; this is not a personal attack on any of you, but these are my honest feelings on shipping and why you never see me comment on ships.

I just don't get shipping. To me no relationship was better or worse than any other. The ships provided character development in different ways for the characters involved in them, but they were a means to an end. That end being more well-rounded characters. All relationships do that to one extent or another and to say that one ship is more 'right' than another makes me crazy. And don't get me started on OTPs.

Well I think that Spuffy is the best, and its extremely difficult to put into words why I love them so I'll just say that their relationship is my favorite fictional relationship to date. Over the course of the show, Spike grew into a character that I really liked, and he and Buffy just seemed so... I don't know, awesome? to me. I also really like Fresley, Cangel, and enjoyed Xandelia a lot.

Don't worry, I don't view that as a personal attack. If you had said something about my mother, that would have been different 😛

Anyway, this is how I see shipping, keep in my mind, it's my own opinion, and I'm not saying its wrong or its right.

Shipping is popular because a person or persons get involved with two characters that they really like, and love to see them together and happy in a relationship. It's kinda like how you listen to a certain song, and you can identify with it. Shipping is, in the general sense, the same kind of thing. People get attatched to certain characters that they see some part of themselves in.

Why do I ship? Because it reminds me of something that I have yet to experience in life, and that's loving someone who's not related to me, and not love in the 'friend' sense of the word, I mean the special kind of person that benefits you. I love Bangel because, in my mind, they're perfect for one another, and I would love to experience that myself. The same goes for Willow/Tara, or Xander/Anya, or Willow/Oz, or Cordelia/Xander, or whatever ship you prefer. We see something in those two people being together that strikes a chord within our brains and hearts, and it makes us feels things.

And that's how I view shipping.

Basically, I agree with Jodast.

I'm on board with every canon ship, even the ones I'm not entirely crazy about. They all served their purpose for the time they lasted, and all had some importance and significance to the characters and to their development. Some people like some relationships more than others, and that's fine, but I don't understand the concept of "disagreeing" with something that actually happened. You don't have to like it, but you can't ignore that it existed, and you don't have to fight with those who do like it.

Non-canon ships are a bit of different story. I don't really get shipping things just for the sake of shipping. I love relationships of all sorts...friendships are no less beautiful and enjoyable than romantic relationships. I understand shipping for fun, heck, there are a few non-canon ships that I enjoy the possibility of, but I don't understand shipping it to the point where you honestly can't handle anyone disagreeing that the characters see each other the way you think they do. But, I'll stop talking about this, because it's a bit of a sore spot with me. I got involved in some discussions about the Buffy/Giles ship on Tumblr (there's a ship I just can't get behind), and, well...suffice it to say that I don't talk about it anymore. Shippers are scary defensive, and I actually lost some friends over it. It still hurts, and it's ridiculous that it ever even should've happened.

That being said...I do, of course, have my favorites. The ones I enjoy reading fanfic about, discussing, squeeing over, etc. There's a small part of me that's girly, after all. 😀

Giles is my favorite character, so I mostly love the thought of him finding romantic happiness. I really don't think I read any fic (other than gen stuff with no romantic angles) that isn't about Giles. Giles/Jenny is lovely and canon, but I also like Giles/Joyce, which is not exactly canon, but I could write you an essay on why I wish it had been (but, again, not delusional...I know it didn't happen, and I take no offense at disagreements). Those are just my preferences...the ones I find most interesting.

I just...don't like to get caught up in ship wars, mainly because I don't feel all that passionate about them like some people do. If it happened on the show, it's canon, and only a matter of individual character preference. One isn't more correct than another, it's just up to you what you like, so there's no point in fighting about it. If it didn't happen, well, it's cool to ship it for fun, but don't get your panties in a twist if others disagree because they have legitimate canon reasons for doing so.

That's probably all I'll say about shipping. 🙂

I love almost every canon Buffy 'ship, some more than others. The only ones that I don't really get behind are Biles and Spuffy. I won't elaborate, since I don't want to start a fight, but I can't stand either of those.
But Calendiles is my biggest and most beloved ship!

Oooh, I forgot! Since I've finished Angel, I'm also on board the Wesley fan train! I think I must have a thing for emotionally traumatized English Watchers. 😉

So, naturally, I enjoy Wesley/Fred, and Wesley/Lilah. Not really sure which of them I like more. They're so different. One is all gumdrops and rainbows and sweetness after sad years of unrequited angst, and the other is fireworks and dynamite and bitter hatred turned to respect.

But yes, there you go, two more ships I enjoy. 🙂

Clearly I lied when I said I was done talking about ships.

Oh yes, Wesley is hard not to love 🙂

Thanks for your answers! I love to hear how others saw the relationships from their point of view. To me it is so interesting to see the various ways people feel about things.

I am super weird in that I actually support all the ships, well the ones that happened anyway! I think the only ship that never really happened that I would have just loved was Giles+Joyce 🙂
Although there are ones that melt my heart more so than others, but for me it is like a story. All the relationships had to happen in order for the characters I love so much to get where they were heading. Each and every pairing has a rich chemistry and has allowed for character growth.
Even though Lilah was probably not the healthiest relationship for Wes, it brought out this wonderful raw and powerful chemistry that allowed an emotional breakthrough for Lilah, not unlike the Spuffy romance.
It is like, when I watch the series, at the time Bagel is happening, they are the best ever, until it turns into Ruffy, then that is the best ever, and then Spuffy. They all give me warm fuzzies,...except Parker cuz he doesn't count!
Same goes for Woz, Tillow, Xandelia, Cangel ,etc.
I guess how where I am going with this, is that they are all beautiful ships with good and bad qualities in every one of them 🙂
I swear, I know the relationships better in this show than I do my past relationships before the husband lol

I just love to see the different opinions, it is what makes us all unique yes? So thanks for the answers!

I adore Spuffy. I do totally get the burning hate for this ship by some, as well as the undying love for it too. The beautiful thing about Spuffy is the rawness and total loss of control in the relationship. Not the healthiest relationship obviously, but in the midst of a totally unhealthy, abusive, unappreciative dirty romance, they both tapped into a deeper part of themselves and by the end, because of this crazy romance they had, they developed into bigger, wiser, stronger people for it. They brought out both the best and worst in each other which is why this ship is one of the most complicated and touchy ships there are.

I think I could analyze every single ship in the show like this lol I just love all my characters so much!

Yes @ what you said about Spuffy

All relationships do that to one extent or another and to say that one ship is more 'right' than another makes me crazy. And don't get me started on OTPs.

I don't take it as an insult, but I do want to respond by what I think is the logic behind shipping.

And Bangels, don't take offense, but I'm going to start with Bangel. I not only don't ship Bangel, I actively hate it. This is because I think it's boring. Conversely, I think Spuffy is interesting, which is why I ship it. So, I can think Spuffy is better than Bangel, because Spuffy just holds my attention more and does not make me want to reel at dramatic!angst!fest!. Someone can despise Spuffy because they think it was bad for both characters involved, and prefer a healthier relationship. Being invested in certain characters also makes me want to ship. Like, I prefer Oz's character to Tara, and Woz dynamic to Tillow, which is why I prefer the former to the latter. You can very well say that all the relationships served a part in character development, but that doesn't preclude you from enjoying to watch one relationship more than another, whether it is because of humour value or dramatic value.

(Example: Buffy and Parker had a relationship, albeit brief. Do you really rank Briley at the same level as... Puffy? Barker? It's like preferring some characters over others. All--most, anyway--have a role to play, but some just appeal to you more.)

...Does that help?

I do put it on the same level, this is exactly my point. The purpose of Buffy/Parker having a relationship was for Buffy to feel used and hurt and to grow as a character in the same way as Buffy/Angel had her go through the whole first love and heartbreak experience. They are devices for character development and storytelling and as such I don't rank them above or below each other. Trust me, no one cries harder at the end of 'Becoming Pt2' than me or in 'Chosen' for that matter, but I cry because I empathise with Buffy losing a loved one, not that it is a particular loved one that she is losing. I hope that makes sense.

I do see what Jodast is saying. For me, I think that the ships should advance the plot and/or character development. They're interesting. And there are some that tug at my heart more than others. I don't think it's a logic thing, it's purely emotional. And that's OK. It doesn't mean that all other 'ships are invalid. Or that if you're not a 'shipper you're weird or something! I do hate when 'shippers take things to the extreme. This is a show, albeit one we love very much. It's not real life.

OK, so I started listing the 'ships I like, then deleted it. There are too many to list. 🙂 That being said, I'm someone that can usually find appreciation in any 'ship. So, while I'm a Bangel, there are aspects of Spuffy that I really like. I just prefer Bangel (maybe because I prefer Angel to Spike? Doesn't mean I don't like Spike at all). And while I don't particularly 'ship Cangel, I adore the friendship, and I can see how the romance could have worked (I just don't think it was done well). I prefer Fred with Wes rather than Gunn, although I liked the Wes/Lilah dynamic too. I like Willow with both Oz & Tara, although I do think that Tara was her one true love. I like Briley, 'cuz I like Riley! But I can see it wasn't meant to last. Still, he brings out good things in her. Dangel is so fascinating to me, I love Darla's arc in seasons 2 & 3 of AtS.

So I don't know, maybe it's the characters I like the most, and the way they interact as 'ships. As I said, I dont' think there's much logic behind it. As Spike said "Love isn't brains, child"

There isn't a ship that I dislike because for the most part I just don't care...but I love Tillow so much. None of the others really make me happy or anything, I mean I like Angel and Buffy as characters, but their relationship just never excited me. I like Spuffy but they were never really in a relationship in my opinion. I also really like the name Calendiles, more than the actual ship 😉 although I did like them together. For the most part I tolerated every relationship. None of them seemed totally ridiculous or anything.

Okay...I'm sorry. I made a mistake. I don't really like Willow/Kennedy. Perhaps I'm just bitter.

Oh, and I love Woz 😀

Personaly, 'shipping is what keeps me interested in shows. I know that's very narrow minded, and I dont know why I do it, maybe its the romantic in me, or I watch on TV what I'm missing in real life 🙂 The only TV show that I've gotten into that hasnt had any relationship for me to romantically follow is Supernatural.

I tend to like a relationship straight away and then dont change from that couple throughout the show, no matter if they are together or not. For me that couple is Bangel. I love how romantically tragic it is, how protective they are towards each other. I watched the show when it originally aired and I was in high school at the time so I could also relate to the relationship, the whole metaphor of liking/loving a guy and it not working out and it being the end of the world because of that.

When I first watched the show I hated Riley but on my rewatches and after the initial sting of losing Angel to his own show, I really dont mind that relationship at all. It was what Buffy needed at the time, he was good to her and caring.

I like Willow with either Oz or Tara, both relationship were good for Willow and helped her grow, they both broke her heart and turned her quite evil 🙂

The other relationships I could take or leave 🙂

Yeah ships are a big draw for me too!
The ones I liked were:

Cordelia + Doyle
Willow + Tara
Anya + Xander
Cordelia + Xander
Buffy + Riley I guess?? (I didn't mind Buffy with Spike or Angel either) It seriously depends on the season I'm watching aha

I mean Spike and Buffy came from a really weird place. With Angel, I don't really remember watching them fall in love. (It's been awhile since I've seen season 1) It felt like Angel already loved her before he met her.

The only one I can think of that I didn't like was Xander and Willow. I just felt that was unrealistic. Willow is hardcore into Xander season 1-2 and he was clearly not interested. Then in season 3 he "all of a sudden" sees her in a new light. Too many shows use that trope/plot. (Thus creating drama with cheating on Oz and GODDESS Cordelia) I didn't buy it.

You know what's kind of interesting? I don't go all crazy for certain ships' on every show I watch. I do for Buffy (and Angel) more than any other though. I mean, Game of Thrones might be the single best show I've ever seen, but I was thinking about this thread and I don't think there's a single ship' on that show that I'm pulling for. It just isn't nearly as big or important to me as the ships' are on Buffy. I mean, there are characters there I connect to and really like, but it isn't the same as Buffy.

Other favorite shows? Same thing. I mean, Las Vegas was awesome, but I don't really recall the relationships being a big part of it for me. Same with Veronica Mars, The Wire (anyone who hasn't seen this show and likes HBO, watch it. It's amazing), Person of Interest, Hawaii Five-O and a number of others.

However, LOST and Smallville had me on a few, but not to the extent of Buffy. With LOST, Jack and Kate were the biggest and best part of that series to me, and in Smallville, I was really invested into Clark and Lana. But with the Buffyverse, Bangel, Spuffy, Cangel, Fresley, Xander&Cordy, Coyle...I'm really, really passionate about them. Funny how that happens.

Maybe it's how much time is spent on each of the ships in the different shows, like how much they actually focus on it and WANT people to ship? Seems like they certainly did on Buffy and Angel! Personally, I think it's smart to always have at least one relationship brewing for people to root for (or hate). Keeps it interesting! But obviously, not everyone agrees with that!

What's really amazing to me is how so many people can view the same ship so differently. The only two ships I really care about are Bangel and Spuffy. As I've said many times before my heart lies with Bangel but I also have a great love for Spuffy.

Honestly, Bangel and Spuffy are what really kept me coming back for more when I first watched the show. When are they going to have Bangel scenes or when is Spuffy gonna get together already???! Silly, I know but I'm a sucker for that kind of thing. I just love a great love story. 😀
