Almost finished Buffy, what should I watch next....?

I got the complete Buffy boxset at xmas and have been making my way through it since January. I've just got Season 7 left, but am delaying starting it because I seem to remember it was quite depressing. Seasons 4, 5 and 6 were bad enough...

Anyway, eventually the dark day will come when I've finished Buffy, and I was wondering what you would suggest I should line up to watch next? I've given up on TV now, it's all about the boxset...

I've really enjoyed, in no particular order,

• Firefly
• My So Called Life
• Lost
• Heroes
• Terminator: SCC (I'm fancying Derek a bit, have the beginnings of slightly unsuitable feelings towards John, and a girl crush on Cameron.)
• Spooks
• Six Feet Under
• X Files

I've also liked, loved or loathed (depending on the series/episode) Dawsons, Angel, The OC and One Tree Hill

Suggestions...?

I really, unbias-ly, enjoy Bones - it just doesn't hurt that David Boreanaz is all over it.

The Shield is pretty badass too. Gritty. I've only gotten through the first two seasons so far, but I love it.

There's always Sex & the City (fav. show ever). Once you get past the first few episodes of Season 1, it's all fun and gravy. The 'coffee shop' conversations between the girls are the best part of the show and it's got some of the best one-liner's in television history (well, imo).

Or, to torture yourself through long, long marathon nights of "ok, ok, I'm just gonna watch one more before bed...", 24. I started this show on DVDs, in order, and I have no clue how people actually watch this on network television knowing full well they have to wait a whole freaking week for the next epi.

I just recently watched the first Season of Brothers & Sisters and really enjoyed that. It's like, My So Called Life, the adult years - all kinds of drama and dysfunction. And way funny.

On the humor side, 30 Rock is HYSTERICAL. I rented it from Netflix last year and then when it showed up on their 'watch it now' feature, I rewatched it and enjoyed it more.

And Entourage and The Office.

You might try the "Highlander" tv series if you liked the first movie (the sequels were crap). I never cared for "Forever Knight," but a lot of people did. Same for "Buck Rogers in the Twenty Fifth Century." If you're desperate, you might try "Charmed."

And, of course, there's "Walker, Texas Ranger." Who doesn't like the immortal Chuck? (Look up the word "bad" in the dictionary, and there's a picture of Chuck Norris.)

Wonderfalls, definitely worth a look. I thought Battlestar Galactica was totally addicting in DVD form. The first few seasons of Alias, very good. By the end of Season 5, it had pretty much jumped the shark. Supernatural might be of interest, since you're an X-Files fan.

I would reccommend Charmed O(This focus more on witches fighting evil and altough some Buffy folks don't like it I would give it a try), Wonderfalls (Tim Minear helped with this show and it has great wit and a good storyline), and Dead Like Me(Hilarious show the dialogue again is very witty, but just so you know it is a showtime series so some of the language may be inappropriate). Then I would also suggest getting Pushing Daisies when it comes to DVD because it is also really good. Good luck! :smile:

Third Watch-Amazing show set in NY around the emergency services...really fantastic viewing.

Grey's Anatomy-You have probaly head the hype about it and I have to say it's deserved this show has a fantatsic dialogue, an amazing cast and exciting if not always believable storylines.

Roswell-One of the old WB's stellar shows. The first season is especially enjoyable. Good cast, sucks you in even if you don't want it to.

I've read your post, and your list groovygarden. I think I understand what your saying. You've stumbled into BTVS, and got that feeling where one ep is too short, and you've got to know more. You want to be addicted again. You want to reproduce the feeling.

Unfortunately you most likely can't. You can come close though. I echo the chorus of Doctor Who, Wonderfalls, and Dead Like Me. I'd add Dark Angel.

I even get the recommendation of Charmed as kind of a Buffy-lite. I'd add Tru Calling to that.

But you appear to want that connection that only comes from a serialized story. Something with meat on it's bones. If you haven't tried them already, here's a few suggestions.

* Stephen King Miniseries (I recommend The Stand and It)
* V
* Lonesome Dove - If you can get past the idea it's a western this one is great. Not the crappy TV series, but the Robert Duval, Tommy Lee Jones mini-series. If you try it, like it, and want more you can look for the sequel of less quality - Commanche Moon, or the more adult, but almost as good Deadwood.
* Rome - Even if you're not into history, snooze through those bits, and wait for Lucas Vorenus, and Titus Pullo. (Adult scenes)

There's TV series that give you that serialized feel, that make you want (need) to watch the next ep on the disc, even though you have other things to do.

The Shield was a good recommendation. It's from a Whedon writer. Angel writers Craft and Fain turned up in the Glen Close season. That one's the best. (Adult scenes, and talk)

There's Whedon writer and actor connections with Dexter as well, and this one rocks.

In fact a lot of those series that first turned up on American pay cable are worth checking out.

There were lots of shows I've never heard of (probably never shown in the UK) which I might check out.

I'll probably crack and buy the Angel boxset pretty soon! The whole Sex & the City thing passed me by, so I'll def try that. Roswell - it was on at really weird and ever-changing timeslots here, so could never get into it. I'll give it a go. Didn't it get cancelled halfway through a series though, à  la Firefly?

Have to say I'm not a Torchwood/Dr Who fan. Maybe I've be spoilt by Buffy, but Torchwood in particular just feels like it's trying to hard. And it's so cheesy!

I already enjoy Supernatural (forgot to add it to the list in my post), so good recomendation!

This should keep me busy!

Huh!?! An english girl that hasn't been watching Dr Who?! Thats just wrong!! But definitely Dr Who, and possibly Torchwood (its very hit and miss, but there was a one-off James Marsters appearance recently).

I notice there was no Tru Calling mentioned, so I'd most definitely recommend watching that too.

And on a non-sci fi/supernatural note, have you ever watched The Hustle?? I love it, and its very entertaining... you might enjoy that.

My favorite non-Whedonverse shows are C.S.I. (Vegas; I hate the other two), Chuck, and House. C.S.I.'s a definite hooker because they give you just dribs and drabs of the character's stories throughout the series and every so often drop a bombshell about one of them.

I recommend Angel and Weeds. I haven't seen Weeds all the way through, but a friend loaned us season 1 on DVD, and we watched in straight through over the course of a weekend. We couldn't turn it off!

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned is Queer as Folk. Dude! Watch that show. Now, high, film-like production values are relatively common, but QAF was the first show that really impressed me in those terms. I haven't seen past season 4, but I couldn't put seasons 1 - 3 down, man. There's a story arc in which a gay high school student is attacked by a homophobic student (bashed in the head with a baseball bat). That episode (the season finale of episode 1) and the next several episodes of season 2 are really *really* good. Check it out. There's a little of everything on this show. They handle big, emotional stories like drug addiction and cancer and stuff right along with really laugh-out-loud funny stories or family-oriented heartwarming ones. It's just awesome. I love each and every character from the nerdy, comic-book-loving geek of the group to the annoying tag-along kid to the sexual predator to the crazy, crass, and funny mom. QAF is a must-see!

Here's what I've got in my DVD collection(in terms of box sets):

-Chappelle's Show(both seasons;not the lost eps,though.) Great if you want to laugh your ass off,but the language is raw.

-The Equalizer,season 1

-Friday Night Lights,season 1

-The first two seasons of House

-Battlestar Galactica(the newer version;miniseries and first season)

(And,of course,the first 2 seasons of Buffy.)

If I had to make a recommendation;I'd go with The Equalizer. Edward Woodward busts his ass,New York is shown to full effect(warts and all),and there are names that will be very recognizable. Plots are well thought-out and suspense-filled,too.

I would suggest Supernatural - i really enjoy it, it can be dark and pretty scary (scarier than Buffy ever was) and light and funny. You get invested in the boys relationship very quickly, which is what the show is all about.

Oh wait I've just thought of a new tact. Series I've heard Buffy fans recommend each other. Well you've seen most of them, but there's two I've heard mentioned a lot over the years that haven't made it on to anybodies list yet. Veronica Mars, and Gilmore Girls. Oh and one more that you of course being British already know all about - Hex.

I adore that show. It had some of the same writers. I fell in love with Gilmore Girls' dialogue. It cracks me up. I just giggle and giggle and giggle every time I see that show. Like on Buffy, the characters on Gilmore Girls spoke in a rapid-fire, culturally relevant, quippy, witty sort of lingo that gave the show a very distinctive feel. Its main focus was on a mother and daughter pair, but it had an excellent cast of very strong (and funny!) supporting characters. My favorite was Kirk, the quirky, awkward guy who held every odd job in town. You never knew what crazy scheme he'd come up with next! My second favorite was the ever-popular Luke, the grumpy, frumpy diner owner with the heart of gold.

Even my hubby grew to like this very girly seeming show, and even he would laugh right along with me every time I watched. Now, my mom and sister both watch, too. It's just hilarious! It's definitely a good time.
