Hit 100, so I'm starting the thread over... With an argument, of course 😀


About the Potentials, I agree that they played an important role in Buffy's develpment as a leader... I just found that they were more of a prop to the season, rather than actually doing anything until the end... It would have been nice to know more about each of them... The only thing you really find out, is that Kennedy's family is rich (and a brat)...

I think I may have tolerated the Potentials more if I knew more about them... And they whined less 😀
 
I don't think I even knew there was a possibility of another type of relationship other than "boy/girl" at 5. Needless to say, the word lesbian didn't come into my vocabulary until middle school 😀 But I doubt she knew the correct terminology at 5 🙂
 
She may or may not have known what the title for it was at 5, but she knew she wanted the girl on girl love, and that's the point.
 
Either way, if we were supposed to get to know the potentials or not, I don't think it worked very well. The idea was good, but to me it didn't work and I never started liking them or the fact that they kept showing up in every other scene.

It worked for me. But then, it's my opinion. I didn't believe it was necessary for the Scoobies' relationship to remain the same as always.
 
I never said the Scoobies' relationship should have remained the same as always. I would just have liked it if they gave more focus to the important characters, the ones we had been following for years and were now saying goodbye to. And that if they wanted to include new characters, I would have liked it if we had got to know them a little better.. because to me they remained a bunch of girls and never became real characters.

It's possible that the Potentials were more important to Buffy's story in Season 7 than the Scoobies. Things change. It changes in real life. And it changes in fictional stories. If they didn't in the latter, there would be no story.
 
Yeah of course things change. They changed a lot during season 7 (that's also why I would have wanted to see more about why/how the scoobies changed, and less about the new characters).. I don't hate the potentials and I can see how they were important to the Buffy-story, but to me it didn't work, that's all I'm saying..

I saw how the Scoobies had changed. And so did a good number of other people. They've even written essays about Season 7 - which are interesting, by the way.

As for the Potentials, I had no problem with them. It was interesting to see Buffy assume the role of authority figure.
 
I think its a good thing that we didnt get to know them better, there were way to many of them and plus they would of taken more attention away from the main characters, i did like them but they did kind of moan and get in the way for a bit, but in the last ep they came alive!
 
I didnt really like the potentials. I hated kennady. I wouldn't have watched season 7 if it was just about what each potential was like to be honest.
 
Season 7 wouldn't be all about the potentials, but it would have been nice if there was more of a background to them. They showed the two that were killed in the beginning of S7, they should have showed something of a home life for some of the others... Being ripped from your life, forced to do something in order to live. Not knowing what is going on. I was watching the extras for S7, and the actresses were saying how you never really knew from week to week if you were staying or going, because they killed off so many of them. I think that would have been interresting to capture as well. They never really ventured into what a Potential thought about dying, more as what they thought about becomming the Slayer when Buffy or Faith died.

Each Potential represented a certain aspect of Buffy's character. Rona's reluctance, Kennedy's aggressiveness, Amanda's relationship with a certain male, etc.

Totally agree. For me..the potentials just helped propel the story of what the First was doing along....just like Caleb, or Spike, or any of them. They were just dressing to the main event. I definitely didn't want to get to know any of them better, and found out too much about Kennedy as it was.
