Question Am I missing something?

I usually dislike lose ends like these, but this opens up for a lot of possibilities for future Spike arcs.

Not that I want another Jasmine, someone claiming "I planned your every move, you're my bitca" but maybe someone still has a plan for Spike? I'm over W&H and the senior partners, I want new Big Bads, but maybe there could be someone with plans for Spike?

A package arrived for Angel. Angel opens the package taking out the amulet and POOF! out pops Spike. His soul was within the amulet so when it was opened his soul was freed. The only thing I don't remember is who discovered the amulet in Sunnydale.

Nobody in Sunnydale discovered the amulet. It was given to Angel by Lilah as part of the negotiation for Angel to head W&H, Angel then took it to Buffy in Chosen.

Have you read the IDW Angel comics and Spike comics? Lots of good storylines there for Spike.

Spike is like kryptonite to Angel, he is Angels most violent creation and he was always competitive with him, then Spike has a relationship with Buffy, gets a soul and when he arrives in LA you can see how jealous Angel is of him. Spike was as evil and destructive as Angel but Spike got his soul without being cursed, he got over the guilt alot easier, he had a relationship with Buffy like Angel never could. Spike was the perfect catalyst for the senior partners to use to try to turn Angel dark in my opinion.

I think they meant who discovered it in the hole that used to be Sunnydale.

That could have happened. But as it turns out, they almost ended up in a competition about who was the best hero. Spike also helped give Angel a wake up call (mainly done by Cordelia) and get away from W&H. I think the Senior Partners should have guessed that was likely to happen and go for a better plan.

I mean, Spike & Angel have always competed, about who's the badest, and who gets Drusilla. It makes sense they try to win in the "Who's the best hero"-game as well.

The SP must also have seen how Spike stepped up in Sunnydale, helping people, so they could have guessed that Spike actually might be a good influence on Angel.

Sure, he made Angel depressed for a while, but Angel was depressed about feeling less heroic than Spike, so it's the good kind of dark Angel felt.

I think the SP would have guessed that it could turn out the way it did. If anything, they'd want to keep Spike away. Maybe that was the plan, then Lindsey got to the amulet?

My feeling is that Spike being at W&H had precisely nothing to do with the SP's. Here's my theory:

The amulet wasn't actually meant for any specifically but it had a back up facility of being able to bring the person back (with the right magics).

It was given to Angel to sweeten the deal for joining W&H knowing that Angel would want to help Buffy. They always thought there was a good chance that he would wear it, hence the back up of bringing him back.

It also makes little sense they would want Spike at this point because he'd have little incentive for working for W&H at this point. Rather than taylor LA branch to suit his needs, it would be easier just to bring Angel back to life.

After Spike died, it was a case of "Whatevs and Shrugs", because Angel's the one they want anyway.

Lindsay was then the one who dug out the amulet and the rest of the scheme we know.

Reasons I don't believe the SP had anything to do with Spike

1) They wanted a vampire with a soul. They got one with Angel. The prophecy only involves one VWAS so why have two? It was Lindsay's plan to get the SPs to believe they were backing the wrong horse. If W&H were hedging their bets anyway why did Lindsay invest so much time in this scheme?

2) They wanted the sweeten the deal with Angel, Spike being around if anything is just going to breed dissatisfaction in him. Him being kept relatively happy there, keeps him there and therefore he's less likely to look underneath the surface...

3) If Spike was there to 'control' Angel then what was the purpose of the failsafe seen in You're Welcome?

As far as I'm concerned everything from the amulet arriving at W&H for a second time and Spike being brought back was all Lindsay and Eve. All the SPs did in the first instance is give the amulet to Lilah to give to Angel.

Exactly who was responsible for sending the amulet to Angel is deliberately vague. What we know for certain is that it is a W&H owned artifact and that Lilah gave it to Angel to sweeten the W&H takeover deal. I don't think W&H really cared that much about what the amulet did or even cared if Angel wore it. W&H's sole motivation for offering him the LA branch was to nullify Angel into insignificance - so if he wears the amulet, why would they object, it's just another way of achieving their objective.

But in this story we have the wild cards of Spike and Lindsey. Spike, who is not even on the senior partners radar, wears the amulet.

And Lindsey, we are told, has spent all his time since leaving W&H, learning all he can about them and the SP - its not difficult to imagine that he still harbored ambitions to get to the top of the firm and is consumed by unfulfilled potential and regret at leaving the firm. Imagine his anger and envy when he finds out that Angel, the one who triggered is departure from W&H, is now the head honcho of the firm that he covets for himself. It is not difficult to imagine him engineering a meeting with Eve, the liaison to the SP and convincing her to help him get what he wants - revenge on Angel.

So personally, I think that Lindsey merely capitalised on the existing situation. I do think he was the one to send the amulet to Angel - he and Eve are the only candidates we know of that have both knowledge and motivation to interfere. Everyone else who might know what the amulet does wouldn't give a flying fig about bringing Spike back. I think they are also responsible for the re-corporialisation mojo too because by that stage they were ready to begin the next phase of their plan of using Spike as a battering ramp to completely destroy Angel's (already fragile) sense of self-belief.

I thought it was just to mess with Angel...though to be honest, Lindsey's arc in Season 5 is so confusing and weird to me that I don't really get it either. 😛

Exactly. Lindsey had so many things happen in s5 that it was hard to keep up with him. Tattoos, his heart being cut out on a regular basis, and then fighting against evil... It was weird.
