Am I Supposed to Hate Dawn?

I really hope that she gets better after this season. Right now, she's just a total annoyance. I guess that's the point of her character in certain scenes, but I'm on episode "Forever" and it's everything I can do to not skip her scenes.

Plus the way her voice gets so nasally when she's upset... It drives me insane, haha.

Her being upset over being "The Key" made a lot of sense, and I could dig that. At no point did that upset me. I also get that the circumstances surrounding the last couple of episodes (Body and Forever) are tough to deal with for a 14 year old, but it's the complete ignorance her character displays that annoys me so much.

I dunno, maybe I'm insane, haha.
 
You're not alone. A lot of people strongly dislike her. She doesn't really bother me too much though. I actually quite like season five, so she certainly didn't ruin the show or anything dramatic like that.
 
I dont really mind Dawn or her whining, she's a kid, its what i'd expect. Plus Buffy would really annoy me too sometimes as a big sis.
 
I think the whole point of Dawn was that she was supposed to be the whiny, annoying little sister that wanted to do everything her big sister did...and they got it pretty much spot on, 'cause my sister is like a clone of Dawn, lol.

I like Dawn, she's one of my favorite characters, but I do understand why people can get upset over her. She does get better in later seasons, especially season seven, but she was a kid in season five, she just found out she wasn't real, and her whole family had been lying to her, I think she had a right to be a little whiny, lol.

Well for sure you're not alone. A lot of people hate her, I have this one avatar with her pic and text "And the award for the most annoying goes to..." 😀
 
If you have a little sister/brother definitely you'll be annoyed by her, probably also if you're a single child. If you are the youngest one you'll like her, she's a good kid after all and she loves Buffy.

Myself, I was the youngest and my poor older sister got to watch over me instead of spending some quality time with her boyfriend, so I was the annoying one. But time passes by and the "blood line" is all we have for good and worst.
 
I'm the oldest and I like her. I wonder if we're the exceptions? This could be interesting, lol.
 
I think she's one of those characters that grow on you with time. I know I completely hated her at first but I kind of like her now. She's still not one of my favourite characters but she's okay.

yeah, same here. i hated her season 5 n 6. only tolerated her in season 7... and she's just "eh" in season 8
I never really thought of Dawn that much of a problem and found that she made a good edition to the story line. She remind me of my sisters at times, really irritating and obnoxious but then siblings are meant to have differences at times.
 
I like Dawn. 🙂 She's not my favorite character or anything, but I love Michelle and I think she did well with the material she was given. In Season 5, it was really easy to dislike Dawn. But I got what she was all about: the annoying kid sister. 🙂
 
I'm the oldest child and I have two younger siblings, but this has nothing to do with that, or with her acting. The actress did a fine job, and it's not like I dislike her acting. I just don't like the character. 14 Year Olds don't act like that. Aside from University, I work at a Youth Center with kids three or four years younger then Dawn's character. I get what it's like dealing with those kids, but my annoyance comes from the way they made her character in this show.

She's whiney, weak, and has zero ability to think something out for even a few minutes. Even my 12 year old brother is more level headed then her.

This is my second favourite season so far, but that doesn't change the fact that I hope to God her character becomes a little more enjoyable by the time season 7 ends, haha.

Sorry if I sound worked up. I'm not, I'm just really tired and just got back from cleaning up a kids holiday party, haha. Plus I'm hungry, but felt like ranting before I eat!!!

I think another big problem is that at this point in the series, you generally like all the main characters. They all have their flaws, but you like them all... You want them to be happy. I find myself not caring if Dawn is unhappy. It's frustrating to have a main character you don't like seeing on screen.
 
It gets easier to get through through the annoying Dawn scenes (I wanted to smack her when she stole Buffy's food and claimed she had made the tray for Joyce) if you think about how much she grew as a person during season 5. I even think the annoying scenes are worth going through so you can get to the siblings scenes.

It just shows how much you can love someone, even tough they're incredible annoying and you might occasionally want to strangle them. Thank God me and my little sis has gotten over the hate part.
 
I thought Dawn was extremely immature -- I'm guessing during her first appearance, she was in middle school, right? I don't know, I don't remember being that whiny when I was thirteen/fourteen. It seems like she was a dramatization of the stereotypical "annoying little sister," but like tenfold.
 
Well, I can honestly say I think that I disliked her in the beginning because at the time we were led to believe that Joss was telling us Buffy had had a sister all along and none of us had been the wiser. Which in later eps we found out what was really going on. But that was a big "WTF Joss?" moment for a lot of us.

I agree. I remember at the time being really angry with the show 'cause they let us believe that Buffy was an only child, when she clearly had a sister that had stayed with her father when Joyce and Hank separated. And then that ep came along and it was like 'OH!' lol.
 
See I thought it was even worse. That Joss was going to have us believe that a sister had been there all along, WITH Buffy.

I thought the same thing, too! It was extra difficult because I was watching it with someone who had already seen the entire series and understood that Dawn was The Key! I kept on asking him, "What the in world is this?!" but he couldn't say anything, haha.
 
I think both she and Connor were introduced to appeal to a younger audience. That's just a wild guess on my part though.

I didn't dislike either of them, but I have a hard time seeing either as a fan favorite. Dawn might do better as a recurring character rather than star as that transition made Connor into extremely likable.
