Am I Supposed to Hate Dawn?

Buffy's S5 whining was 10x more annoying.

I agree, Buffy's immaturity regarding Dawn got a little annoying. Perhaps it was because she was truly an only child and had grown up that way?
From what I've seen, it looks like Buffy is the whiniest when Dawn is around.

I guess it really bothers me that the Scoobies all had their thoughts altered.
Like in Superstar, with Jonathon. It's Joss's whole "throw a character in there, alter everyone's thoughts to make it okay" thing.
It's a deus ex machina.

The only whining that ever bothered me was Angels 😉 I really like Dawn! But as far as broody teenagers go Connor's my favourite. 🙂

Older and Far Away and Dead Things are the only episodes I hate Dawn in. Although she irritates me in other parts of S6. She even annoys me in S8 (I think she has a line somewhere about how Willow was just like a Mom to her.. I mean, really, could you be any more ungrateful for your sister?).

I guess you can see it in a different light too - Buffy's her sister and always gonna be her sister, therefore she can't take the mother-place. Being the sister is just as good. I don't think Dawn really is ungrateful, I think she just takes Buffy kinda for granted, she's used to Buffy taking care of her and doesn't reflect over it. But saying that Willow was like a mother to her got to me a little bit, I have to admit. I just thought of the gift and everything else Buffy has done for her and got really sad, despite the reasons I just mention that could have been behind that statement.

I thought Dawn was extremely immature -- I'm guessing during her first appearance, she was in middle school, right? I don't know, I don't remember being that whiny when I was thirteen/fourteen. It seems like she was a dramatization of the stereotypical "annoying little sister," but like tenfold.

I said that same thing... all my older sibblings and cousins proceed to promptly laugh their asses off and disagree.

Teenagers are whiny, moody and annoying. Specially at that age. Specially to older sibblings.

I like Dawn. I know, I understand and I agree that she was whiney and annoying and moody at first, but that was so for a reason.

But I think that, much like everyone in this whole, Dawn grew a lot. By season seven, she's like a complete different person.

Well its no secret to anyone on here that I totally hate Dawn! In everyway possible, I hate her in S5, S6 and S7 she never got better for me and I think I was the only one cheering for Glory and her plans to kill the annoyance lol

While Dawn annoys me, I do have to admit that I think the storyline behind "the key" is brilliant. Was Joss wanting to attract a younger audience? I have no idea, but the idea wasn't a last-minute thrown-together plot. Buffy's death in the Gift was foreshadowed back in season 3, so I have to think that the key/Dawn element had been planned beforehand as well.

Dawn comes into her own more in season 7, and I actually like her there more than season 8 (but I'm not caught up on my comic reading, so I'll reserve judgement until the season concludes).

Season 7 is the ONLY time I like Dawn. Earlier season she just got on my nerves too much. I remember one episode towards the end(ep?) where she help out by letting them all know that she had read some ancient text in it's original scripture. It impressed me that she went to great length to help out the potentials.

Still...the hate I have for Dawn overpowers my love for Dawn in s7.

Yes but the problem is this happened pretty much entirely off-screen. At the end of S6 she is a mess, in the beginning of S7 she is a bright and cheerful girl who not only isn't devastated by the death of yet another person close to her but never even mentions Tara, IIRC. Seems to me the writers heard too much complaints about Dawn's whining and went way too far in the other direction...

Amen to that!🙂 Couldn't agree more

Aww, I love Dawn! Yes, she has her moments, but her storyline is fantastic and all 3 of her seasons tie my top 3 favorite seasons with season 2.
