Am I the only one?

I'd agree. Yet, names seem to play an important role in the 'verse. The names of the characters often signify something important about the character, such as the history behind how Spike got his name (we all know that story...) or Buffy Summers' or Angel's names just being ironic in the context of the show. I mean, Buffy is certainly not a "sunny" character and do I really need to say how ironic naming a damned vampire "Angel" is? Just another one of Joss' touches. 😉

Exactly! Most of the time, if not all of the time, the names mean something in Buffy anyway I can't speck to Angel. You could take the characters Faith, Buffy and Willow (often called Will) and put them on a line from one extreme to the other with Buffy in the middle. Faith is very much wild and crazy doesn't care, pretty much letting fate decide what happens. Willow wants to be in control of her life and doesn't want to leave it to faith. A very willful concept don't you think? The point is the unusual names aren't by accident.

Also, am I the only one that loves the fact that most of the names are weird? I am all for weird names. Yay, weird names!

weird names are awesome!!!
Buffy St. Marie is the only other Buffy I've heard of but some of the others aren't that strange. I guess it depends on where you live too, Dawn is pretty common over here.

I love the strange names 🙂

But there are some normal ones.
Tara
Daniel (Oz' first name)
Faith

And Dawn doesn't seem very strange to me. But, I personally love odd names

What about Dollhouse, huh?

Topher
Echo
Whiskey
Mellie
November
Alpha
Adele

And yes, I am aware that they're from the greek alphabet

I'm suprised you didn't add Darla and Drusilla. Those are fairly odd names. And does everyone remember Sunday? the vampire that kicked Buffy's ass?

It's not the Greek alphabet but the, erm, phonetic spelling alphabet (or something like that)

The Dolls have their names for a reason and they get substituted from time to time. Go by their real names instead. And since my memory is what it is I only remember Caroline and Madeleine. But Topher and Adelle is right but there's also Paul, Boyd, Dominic and Claire. So all in all not that many uncommon names is it? The actors have more uncommon names don't you think? 😉 Tahmoh, Enver, Dichen and Miracle.

Pretty sure Topher is short for Christopher. I know a LOT of Christophers, and at some stage me knowing them, they've all tried the Topher thing at some stage, but end up being Chris because we're all kinda stubborn. I do know a Christina that we call Tina though 😉

I'm also sure that I've read somewhere that Buffy is actually some sort of shorted, elaborated form of Elizabeth. I'm not sure exactly how or where I heard that from though.

But as someone with a strange first name, I love it. I hate that I had to shorten it because teachers don't know how to pronouce Kasima (it's not like it's hard!), but you know....these things happen.

Also....I'm currently working in a place that has a lot of International students....so I've seen names like Lonely, Immaculate, Gentle....and a bunch of other ones I can't even pronnouce or spell off the top of my head.

I know so many little boys named Xander -perhaps the name got popular after the show, most of the mothers are BtVS fans.

Dawn, Rupert, Tara, and William aren't odd names.

There is actually a whole site that talks about the names on Buffy and it does mention that the name "Buffy" is a form of a Elizabeth. Sadly, I can't remember what the name of the site is and I can't find it.

I got the site from a book called "Why Buffy Matters. The Art of Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and I don't have the book anymore. Great book though, I recommend it to anyone who loves Buffy. You'll love the series even more after you read it.

Point of fact, Alpha and Omega are the only ones from the Greek Alphabet, the rest are from the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Note: For Alpha to be from the Phonetic it would have to be spelt Alfa.

On Xander, in many Germanic-ish areas variations of that name are quite popular. In Dutch we have Sander, and in Germany too, I think. That is to say, I know a german called Sander.

I adore Xander as a name, and would def consider it if i had a child. so maybe these names will just become more common now because of fans like us lol.

Actually as has already been pointed out - very few members of the Buffy and Angel have unusual names. Most of the characters either have a fairly common name or a known by an unusually version of a common name (like in Buffy's case).

the characters with fairly unusual names include-
-Cordelia
-Harmony
-Drusilla
-Willow
-Winifred

Ahem. Its California. No one has regular names. Some California names are: Moon Bloodgood and Pilot Inspektor Lee. Are any names in the Buffyverse any weirder than that?

Don't forget Rob and Sheri Moon Zombie!

lol I'll never stop laughing at Pilot Inspektor Lee - why, why, why? would you name your kid that LMAO
Well Willow, Rupert, Cordilia and Christian etc are kinda rare, even Xander as a name aint heard of much. They're hardly as common as Charles or Tara.

I meant Lindsey(for a guy) not Christian.

Actually Anne is a very common Name.

Granted you rarely hear it used in relation to Buffy - but it is still her middle name.

well i have noticed the strange names too!but some are not strange for me they are just unique and special!i mean "Faith"...isn't that a strong and special name? or "Angel"? i am greek and there is a name "Aggelos" which means Angel!it is quite common! but i also like Angel's human name: Liam!

And whenever i talk to my friends and tell them i watch a series with the main character named Buffy they totally make fun of the name...but i have read somewhere...don't remember the site...the analysis of Buffyverse names and i read that Buffy derives from Elizabeth!

Also i like the name Cordelia,it's so poetic and i think Willow is very nice!

I like the unique names. I'll probably end up stealing some to name my future kids or pets. Some of my favorites are Cordelia, Anya, Angel, Gunn and Lorne. I think Joss just has a thing for cool names. I mean look at his other shows... Mal, River, Topher ect.

Angel is my name! 😛

But, you're right, the names are really weird. I'm still puzzled where 'Buffy' came from. So weird haha

Hey Angel! How's are you??
I always loved that all the main characters had interesting names. So much better than your everyday, run-of-the-mill names!
