Am I the only one?

haha. I'm naming my kid Anyanka. I considered naming my other kid Halfrek, but decided against it. That'd be too cruel and way over the line. haha

Am I the only one that noticed at how there is no such thing as a normal name for a BuffyVerse main character?

Buffy - I heard that this is often short for "Elisabeth", I'm not sure if they ever said whether Buffy was her real full name or not
Angel - Not his real name - Liam is a compeltely normal name
Xander - Short for Alexander, a very common name
Willow - OK, yes, unusual name
Spike - Not his real name - William is very common.
Dawn - Dawn is actually quite a common name.
Anya - I know a couple of Anyas. Nothing strange here.
Giles - Surname, real name Rupert is old-fashioned but still relatively common
Fred - Odd nickname, and Winifred really should be an 80 year old woman, not a hot 20-something.
Gunn - Surname, Charles is a normal name
Wesley - Old-fashioned, but not too weird
Doyle - Surname, his real name is Allen Francis though, which isn't much better
Lorne - He's a demon, it's excusable.

So yeah, you got two or three there.

Joss knew people would think Buffy was a weird name. I love that he played with it:

GIRL 'What kind of name is Buffy?'
GIRL 2 *passing by* 'Hey, Aphrodesia.'

:-D

Hahahahahaa. I'd take "Buffy" over "Aphrodesia" any day.

Oh yeah, lmao. :D
He used the name "Buffy" because he knew it would look ridiculous in conjunction with "The Vampire Slayer". It's a very silly name, and definitely conjures up the image of a silly valley girl. Which she is, but she also kicks people's asses and saves the world.

William first named himself William the bloody, but after Angelus made fun of him he changed it to Spike, cuz he tortures his victims using railroad spikes

Angel/Angelus - a demon with a face of an Angel

The Master - well, he was a master

Darla - means "dear one" or "darling", she's hot so that explains it

Drusilla - means fruitful, I think the visions are some kind of fruit, metaphorically

Faith - opposite to her character

Gunn - guns mean power, he's strong for a human, & the AI team often call him the muscle

Angel, Spike, & Darla's names & their meanings were mentioned on the show, the rest are just me playing around, I couldn't think of anything for the rest of the names, though

My husband actually had chosen Alexander Riley if we had had a boy for our first child. 😉 And of course, we were going to call him Xander. 😀 However our sweet little boy turned out to be a precious baby girl we named Emily. I fought for Cordelia but hubby said no. LOL

Aw no Cordelia? :( I've fantasized about naming a child after her, I think Cordy is the cutest nickname. Chances are my future husband won't go for something so unusual, but hey ya never know. ;)
You know, I never really thought characters' names on Buffy were unusual until my mom pointed it out. I guess I just always went with the flow and accepted that everyone had original names because it's a one of a kind show.

As far as future children go, I've thought about Alexander "Xander" Thomas. I'm also totally down to have a daughter named Willow. I don't know how the father would feel about that though. I suppose I would have to marry someone equally absorbed in the Buffyverse.

My hubby likes the Buffyverse names on the Buffyverse characters; he's not crazy about any of them in the real world though.

It's funny, I've thought of that many times. Definitely some creative names...

me too! however, i have a buffy tattoo... so people might wonder to what insane extent my fandom goes. It's a great name, though.

I can't imagine naming my child Buffy though... There's a native american artist named Buffy st. Marie, so the name is in existence. I just don't think I could use it...

William the Bloody has a nice, homey ring to it...

I love that all the names are unusual. Just adds to the uniqueness of the show, imo. 🙂 But I really do wonder where Joss pulled Buffy from. When I first heard the title Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I remember thinking, "Buffy? Interesting nickname, I wonder what her real name is." lol

I've never thought the names on Buffy were crazy, but almost all of the guys have extremely unusual nicknames. While Willow and Buffy go by their full names, or a slight shortening, the guys names (Oz, Xander, Spike, Angel) are a little more out there. I didn't even know Xander's real until recently. I just thought he had a weird name.

I'm also totally down to have a daughter named Willow.

So would I. I've always loved the name Willow, even before I watched Buffy. But, I've always loved names that are more, well, nature oriented. I have no idea why; maybe I was a hippie in my previous life.:tongue3:
