Right i have seen loads of comments saying how Spike CHOSE to get his Soul ...wel i was watchin the ep n i dont remeba Spike choosin to get the soul i remeba Buffy rejecting Spike and Spike wanting to KILL her so he went to get his Chip out then he promising he would kill her he didnt choose to get it he wanted to became the Vamp he was before the chip!
Am I Wrong?
not being bigheaded but i dont think i am wrong as i have the Video to prove it and also im sick of every1 sayin he choose to get his soul for Buffy well i think thats a load bull**** he wanted to KILL her! and dosent he say to her that he got it for her..well wot a arse he is!

No. Joss confirmed this in an interview. He only wanted to make it seem like he wanted to get the chip out. Infact the whole time he wanted the soul.
 
yea spike went to get a soul... to be better for buffy... he had gotten past the whole i want this chip out phase.

spike didnt choose anything he was used like an instrument in the bigger play of things ,,, the evil needed a vamp with a soul and knowing that they had no chance with angel they found themselves another candidate ,,,, spike thinks he made the choices but in reallity he was used
 
Honestly... I think he went first just to get the chip removed so that he could harm Buffy.

but... hello... Spike, honey you could kill her anyways... your chip wasn't working in "Smashed", so...

But then he said "I want to be what I was before..." to the creepy glowy eye guy. He fought the trials and one... the creepy guy said "We will return your soul"

I think the creepy guy knew deep down what Spike maybe meant when he said he wanted to return to what he was before. A nice 'guy' (yeah, okay, he's not a guy, but bear with me) with a soul.

Make sense to anybody?
 
Since both James Marsters in lots of interviews, and Joss Whedon have said Spike wanted his soul all along I'm going with that. Plus Spike told Buffy in season 7 that he went to that demon because he knew from a legend that he could give him his soul too.

Also, it was supposed to be ambiguous on the show on purpose, so we would think Spike wanted the chip out but all along he wanted his soul, thats why it was written the way it was, and Spike didn't wear a sign that said "I want my soul!!" It was a little confusing but if you think about it, he could already hurt Buffy without a chip and he knew it, and killing her sister I guess would have hurt Buffy the most, dont' think he was planning that, when he said give her what she deserves, he meant someone with a soul. If you notice in all the eps before that they tried to point out the soulless thing, like Spike mentioning it to Anya in Entropy
 
Yeh i get everyone saying about spike wanting to get a soul, but shouldn't there at least being some kind of hint that he wanted his soul? instead of him just saying it ages after he got it. grr arrghh, i do'nt know!
 
I think that the purpose of Spike just saying he wanted to be the way he was, was to throw off the viewers. We all expect him to go back to his evilness, so it was a nice surprise for him to get a soul. Although, when he first said that I suspected he might want to be human again, I was kinda close, they both have souls. 🙂
 
yeah that did confuse me too, the whole time until the demon actually said "and now i will return your soul" I thought that Spike was going to get the chip out. From everything that he said, it really sounded like that was what Spike wanted....but i guess not

THANK YOU!!! I TOTALLY AGREE 100%!!! That is the perfect take on it. It was true that Joss wanted to leave it up in the air so he wanted James to play it like he wanted vengece but later they chose to take the other road. We always wanted the soul.
 
I think SpikedBuffy might be onto something here. It seemed to me after (multiple) watchings that Spike wanted something...it really seemed like he wanted that chip out so he could be what he was before...so he would be able to hurt not only Buffy, but all those who meant something to her. That he really wanted his soul would be a surprise to him as well as us (it was to me). That is the perfect take!!

I think he always wanted his soul because he's always been second next to Angel. When he went to the magic guy I think he was telling himself that he wanted to be able to hurt Buffy because he was angry. But subconsciously he knew he could hurt her if he wanted and deep down all he really wanted was his soul. The whole chip thing was him lying to himself. The magic guy of coarse knew what Spike didn't want to admit to and gave him what he was really asking for. His soul.
 
I agree. What had I meant was that I think after he tried to rape Buffy there was alot of pain and guilt on his part. Like he realized that the only thing he could ever do right is be bad. It's like falling off the wagon. Once you do you go hog wild cause what the hell does it matter anymore? I think he went with the intention of getting his chip out so he could lose himself in his evil self. He couldn't be a man after all. I think what was really in his heart was to be real again and to be with her. I don't think he knew getting his soul was a possibility until it happened. I think the demon knew that on some level. If Spike had known he could I believe he would have tried sooner. I can understand what he must have been feeling with the guilt eating away creating an anger that is easier to deal with. But he would have done anything for her so if he'd have known it was possible that would have been attempted long before.
 
well Joss said that Spike went to get his soul but they did 2 differnet scenes and they chose that one but Spike got his soul for a selfish reason if you ask me, he only got it so he could redeem himself for what he almost did to Buffy

isn't that enough to make him seem like a good 'person'

I mean, since Angel got his soul he has never fed on a human (oh wait, that's right---- he slipped, so he's not perfect either). So, the 'not feeding on humans' thing was to redeem himself for what he did to so many others...

what's the difference? Why is it bad for Spike to get his soul to redeem himself for what he almost and most regretably felt bad about to Buffy?
 
AMEN SPIKEDBUFFY!!! Another good point. See? Angel and Spike are very different characters but they neither is guilty of any more or less than the other. They have both been killers, and, well you know, and they have both tried to kill Buffy, both loved her, both saved the world...I like Angel but I would just never say he was better than Spike. Just different.
