I do not think it was done to 'throw' the audience off. It was a nod to Amber and the Tara character. She was the character with the second highest amount of 'guest stars'(Joyce was obviously 1). She was a character with a huge following and had been part of a somewhat controversial role.
I think it was definitely a thank you to Amber and Us.
Well if they really wanted to honor her they should have included her in the all of seasons six's opening. But alas they did not. Oh well. Anyone know if this is the real reason, or was it to throw fans off?

In "Seeing Red," the episode in which Tara dies, Amber Benson (Tara) was added to the opening credits. This is because Joss Whedon has "always wanted to kill someone in the opening credits."
tons of sites say that same quote. wiki says something similar also.
