American TV Sci Fi in UK, Australia and elsewhere in Europe

I'm just curious. If you're not in North America, do you get any of these (via TV)?

Are you a season behind? I guess a better question would be which one's don't you get.

In NA we get Doctor Who and Torchwood a season behind, but we don't get Primeval, or Afterlife. We just got Jekyll. Never got the Hogfather, Sarah Jane, or Dracula. The BBC America guys might get other stuff.
 
I was well-impressed by Hogfather. Dr Who, I'm not so hot on. Torchwood... eep.

Battlestar Galactica, Ghost Whisperer, Supernatural, 4400 and Stargate Atlantis are available on Sky, the satellite/ cable/ digital stations, and I reckon most households have access to some form by now.


Medium and Smallville are on terrestrial though, just at weird times.

I think that's about right, but to be honest, I've fallen out of the habit of watching TV, so I'm not sure what seasons anything's on.

Really curious to see Bionic Woman, for the sheer novelty of hearing Michelle Ryan's American accent. For God's sake people, Zoe Slater!

That said, I've heard very good things about it too, and Bionic Woman was my idol as a kid. From the people who remade BSG, so it can't go too far wrong.
 
I don't think this will really spoil you in a bothersome way, but there's this cute bit in Bionic Woman where
Jaimie Sommers is going undercover, and her boss asks her, "How's your British accent?". Michelle Ryan gives him this look like "What are you? Stupid?"
 
4400, Smallville, Battlestar Gallactica, Bionic Woman, the old Flash Gordon [ is there a modern version ?] Ghost Whisperer, Medium, Saving Grace, SG Atlantis, Supernatural. I have seen, although last year was said to be the final Supernatural.

Moonlight, Reaper, Cavemen, Chuck, Eureka, Journeymen, Medium, Pushing Daisies. Some of them I've never heard of, others I get info from this site. But then again the names may change like the names of films.
How far behind they are is anyone's guess. Plus those who decide when a show airs have been known to do strange things. Season eight of Charmed is a classic example, the first episodes were at 8:30, then the next 4 were shown at 6:30 pm on a Saturday evening, then several months later the rest of the season was shown in the early midday afternoons. Mind you the DVD's were on sale before they were shown.

I like Michelle Ryan a lot. The storylines she got towards the end of her run in Eastenders were increasingly crap, but she's a solid actress. Possibly the least likely British-to-American TV transition ever though. Well, after Hugh Laurie, anyway.
 
Actually there's a few British actors in the American shows playing Americans. Sophia Myles is good to. She plays the TV newscaster sidekick, possible love interest of a vampire detective in Moonlight. She's good. She was in one the Doctor Who ep - Girl in the Fireplace.

There's this other British guy who plays an American, schizophrenic photographer in dirt. He's great. He might be my favorite. Oh, except Jim Dale who does the audio narration for the Harry Potter books, also does the narration for the new series Pushing Daisies. That one's superior.
 
Yeah, but none of them would have been quite as famous or as iconically associated with an accent as Michelle Ryan was.

Guarantee you practically everybody in Britain or Ireland would know exactly who you were talking about if you repeated that phrase to them. 😀

Probably the biggest soap storyline since the Jordache's put Trevor under the patio, and boy does that reference show my damn age. Anyway:

Torchwood is on BBCAmerica here, and BBCA is a season behind SciFi on Doctor Who (which is a season or so behind the UK). I *thought* BBC America had Afterlife at one time, but I don't think I ever watched it. What's the one with the medical examiners and police? I just am remembering a scene where a girl gets hit by a bus lol. Maybe that's Wire in the Blood? I know we had that for a while.

I don't mind not getting Primeval, but I wish they would show Skins.
 
Oh, and I just remembered - Life on Mars. That's time travel, isn't it? We get that one. Is that the one you're thinking of with the cops and the meds?
 
No, I know that one. This is the one with the girl who was on Coupling in the ep where Jeff can't figure out if he's on a date with the girl from his office.

I've just read this in the current Discworld Monthly regarding The Hogfather, which may be of interest to you and other N American members -

It looks like The Mob and SkyOne's excellent adaptation of Hogfather is finally coming to US television.

Hogfather will make its US premiere on ION Television at 7/6c on Sunday November 25th.

I understand that ION might not be that well known a channel - I've spoken to a couple of people that didn't realise they could already receive it.

BTW - I was at school with the guy who plays the actual Hogfather (not a huge part, despite the title 🙂)
 
The only ones that I know if in Australia out of that list are:

I think they're all pretty much streamed from the US now so we see them at the same time (or at least the same week).

Medium I think we're a season behind. I vaguely remember seeing a station possibly picking up Chuck but I'm not sure.

Haven't seen hide or hair of 4400 or Battlestar Gallactica for ages.

I wish Ten hadn't screwed up the times with Torchwood to the point of taking them off it off the air. We also get Doctor Who but I never got into it. Channel 9 was showing Primeval on Saturday nights a few months back but that disappeared too.
 
I think Bionic Woman is going to be shown over here in the UK in the new year.

Plus the Sarah Connors Chronicles is on Sky in new yeat too.

These are the shows that are broadcasted on regular Belgian cable... and I think we're behind on all of them (They only showed Angel season 5 last year 😵), but with the most popular shows like Lost, Heroes, Prisonbreak, Desperate Housewives, CSI5('s) the gap between the American release and the European release is much smallen methinks...

You might be able to get those other shows on other channels on digital television, but since we don't have that at home I can't be sure...
 
For those wondering, Pushing Daisies is coming to ITV early next year (talking UK here). Suppose having a British actress made the networks interested. Its a great show too, I reccomend it.
 
Had to check IMDB. I did not know Anna Friel is British too. So that makes 2 Brits on PD. Anna Friel (who plays an American), and Jim Dale (who narrates).

Used to be every time I heard Jim Dale's name mentioned I could hear him saying "Hermione", but now I only hear him saying "the Pie Maker" in my mind's ear.
