Amsterdam - Any tips??

Hello all of you who know a bit about this town!
My friend and I are planning in December to stay for a few days in Amsterdam... Since both of us never were there, we are struggling with the obvious things...

Has anyone ideas about where one could stay for not too much money but still have a good time?
Some good places to eat/ go out?
What should we visit? Beyond the well-known attractions, what is worth seeing?

I've never been to Amsterdam, so I don't really have any advice there, but if you happen to pass by Maastricht (which is in the south of the Netherlands), feel free to drop by and I could give you a tour of that city 😀

Oh I love Amsterdam. I was there twice. Both times I was in a Hotel Pulitzer, it's in the centre, but sorry I don't know how much it costs. As for eating I loved Golden Temple, it's a vegeterian restoraunt. Cafe Diner De Munck is a local cafe, very lovely. You must to the Hard Rock Cafe, and I also liked Bonnes Choses. And for sight seeing, well I loved The Van Gogh Museum, Rembrandt’s House, The Anne Frank House and Heineken Brewery. And oh, you have to take the canal cruise, and visit Vondelpark. Everything is so close in The Netherlands so you can easily visit many cities while you're there. Me and a friend went there last year and stayed three nights in Amsterdam, two in Rotterdam and one in Leiden – all very nice places (except for one night in Amsterdam when we didn't have anywhere to sleep and were wandering the streets for hours trying to avoid annoying and gross men).

Anyhow, we went to this lesbian burleque club, very awesome. Oh and you have to go to the lgbt bookstore (if you get one of those gay maps it'll tell the address). Basically though, just walking around in Amsterdam is what I'd tell you to do, it's a beautiful city and there are bridges everywhere. Oh and eat stroopwafels! And buy hagelslag!

We stayed at this hotel a few years ago - Hotel Multatuli Amsterdam
- it's in a very good location near the central railway station
Also stayed at this one - Amstel Botel - Home - in a similarly good central location
I'm not sure what they are like currently but when we were there they were both OK budget hotels - it may be worth checking the reviews on Trip Advisor or similar sites.
Buying a ticket on the Museum Boat is a great way of spending a day - you get to travel around the canals and can stop at pretty much all the brilliant museums and galleries, like the Anne Frank House and the Rijksmuseum.

You should visit Madam Tussaud.
And if your 18 years and older: The Sexmuseum 😎 I've never been there, but ok.

Last but not least: Kalverstraat. A lot of shops there.

Actually the sex museum really disappointed me. I study gender and sexuality so these things interest me a lot. Like history of norms about sexuality etc. But the museum was basically lots of photos of penises "“ which isn't really my thing (but hey if you're into that it's probably alright!). It was also mosty about heterosexual sex, but not only.

What I also found really weird is that there were quite a lot of photos of people having sex with animals (which I guess isn't illegal in Sweden anymore, I don't know about other countries, but should be). These pics where also in the same room as photos of BDSM sex, and I think it's really really strange to compare those two activities!

BTW - the Botel seems to have moved since we were last there but according to their website there is a free ferry service from near the Central railway station.

I am super jealous. I have never travelled abroad and Amasterdam is one of the places I would love to see. Hope you have fun and remember to be safe. After seeing Hostel I dont think I could ever actually stay in a hostel. Too scary!!

I been to Amsterdam twice, only short visits over the weekend though.

Mostly I spent the time at different bars around Leidseplein.
