I was always surprised by the character's development of Amy.
In the beginning she is a nice, normal girl. She becomes a witch, and uses her power with a form of moderation (okay, the thing with the test was not right, but it wasn't really bad). Like when Xander forced her to do the love spell on Cordelia, she was extremelly reluctant. In season 3, she performs her famous rat-spell and stays a rat for three years. When Willow derats her, Amy comes back as a magic-addict, hatred character. And one of the first thing she does when she's human again is go to Rack, and she apparently is one of Rack's favourite. Does that mean she already was going there when she was cute nice Amy?

Why do you think she became that dark and vengeful when she became human again?
 
I have no idea. Pretty inconsistent and basically they just used Amy as a plot device. I dunno how she went from nice, innocent girl to magic junky who puts a curse on Willow within a year.

I guess we're supposed to believe she was seeing him when she was a teenager. It's hard to buy, though.

As for why she's vengeaful, I dunno. She turned herself into the rat, no one else did. Unless she is somehow trying to take what Willow had for her own, to learn how she became such a magic guru. That's the only thing I can think of but I don't know what stopped her from asking. Also, Willow was a burn out at that time so it wasn't like Amy had a good example about what that addiction would do.

To sum up, inconsistent plot device. 😛 RIP Amy's character.
 
Amy is my most hated plot device of the series. It is flat up impossible she would come back that way... I mean, we saw absolutely no indication in season 3 that she was using magic for anything other than temporary personal gain (like homework) and she couldn't even do the love spell right. For her to have the kind of power and magical proficiency she had in season 6 is, to me, absolutely ridiculous.

Absolutely. She wasn't an expert before rat-days, she'd have to be practising to be such a knowitall, not eating cheese.
Agreed so far with everyone in the thread....weak plot device.....I said the same thing to myself when I first watched...It would of made more sense if somehow she switched bodies with her trophy mother again lol
 
I agree it was weak writing but I think we're supposed to believe she was evil all along.

Amy grew up with a very abusive mother and I guess that did it's share of damage. She never hung out with the Scoobies that much in high school and they didn't really supervise her use of magic like they did with Willow or know what she was up to the majority of the time and in Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered she manipulates the teacher into thinking she did her homework (something Willow wouldn't have done until she was addicted) and also knows how to turn people into rats and perform love spells. I think she was into some bad stuff that no one knew about in high school (i.e. Rack) She isn't really shown to have the friends or family support to keep her in check.

Willow went from a nice,innocent girl to a magic junky. Maybe that's just what the addiction does to you.

Sure, Willow overcame it and she was good again after S6, but she had friends and people there for her. Not to mention her best friend, Xander, who actually saved her in the first place.

I don't think Amy had many friends. She missed 3(?) years of her life because she was a rat. She was jealous of Willow because of her powers and friends.

I'm not saying I like Amy or the writing really, but I'm just trying to get an explanation.
 
I don't like the direction the writers took Amy. I always wish that Amy would have been the one that Willow would have explored her withcraft/sexuality with instead of Tara. Nothing against Amber Benson- she's a lovely girl and a wonderful actress- but I wasn't really crazy about the character in regards to the Amy we got in the early seasons of the show.

My point is Willow was not a rat for years and had time to develope it while Amy ran on a rodent wheel. I doubt Rat Amy was practising magic and seeing Rack inbetween napping on her woodchips. She went from one extreme pre-rat to another post-rat which is inconsistent. Was Amy addicted?

I always thought Amy in the later seasons was driven by her anger at Willow at spending all that time honing her magic skills and getting so good, yet taking sooooo long to de-rat her. Amy spent a large chunk of her life as a rat, while Willow got to be out living her life, experiencing love and loss and everything in between. Amy was mad. She was driven by her rage and jealousy at Willow.

I'd buy that, but she came outta rat-mode more powerful than she went in. How? Was it really that infuriating that her powers were growing stronger over it?

I don't think she she became more powerful. I think she was back in high school. Jonathan got into some bad stuff that the Scooby gang didn't know about. The Scooby gang was too caught up and and distracted with their own problems to take notice of the minor characters and whether they were okay or not.

I suppose you can say that, however Willow was hanging with Amy and Michael in high school. I think it was Gingerbread - the same episode that Amy ratted herself - that it was shown they were working on that spell together for Buffy. If that's the case then I'm shocked Willow didn't notice nor allude to Amy's abilities at any time during the series, especially as an aspiring witch. Conisdering they are monster hunters and have had to deal with Amy's messes in the past I don't think they'd overlook this but that's just me.
 
Amy is basically a walking talking plot device. And I am saying this as someone who likes her pre-rat. It's never explored why she started dabbling in magic after the traumatic experiences with her crazy mother. Or how the heck she knew about Rack after spending years as a rat. I have no idea why she is still around in the comics since post-rat she has been even more one dimensional than Andrew (imagine that!).

But I am almost willing to forgive all that just because she is hilarious is Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, especially when she says petulantly "You have no idea what am I going true" or when she calls Jenny "too old". The latter is funny because the actresses are practically the same age. And there is also one of my favourite fanfic quotes ever:

"You remember that year I bought her [Amy] a deluxe exercise ball?" Willow said, lifting aside a slightly charred binder. "There's five bucks wasted. A-And all the times I told Miss Kitty no?" She sighed regretfully. "One blind eye and we'd all be a lot happier."
 
Agreed with a lot of people on here! I think the development of Amy is really odd, especially since she was a RAT for three years. How in the world could she become/revert to "dark Amy" so quickly? SHE WAS A RAT FOR THREE YEARS! I would think she'd be getting reacquainted with being, like, human again.

Makes sense. Was Amy addicted? She stole sage and magic stuff from Willow. Then Buffy caught her and she confessed that she needed it. I think she was addicted.

She was very much into magic in high school and not really in a good way. Then she became a rat and was that for so long, she just couldn't wait to get her hands on magic the moment she was normal again and she went crazy with it.
 
I liked Amy. I named my car after her. Because my car's pretty, but she's got problems... Amy is a good example of how you can hide addiction very well.

I think she was interesting because she was a rat for so long, which must have been traumatizing. I'm sure she feels like some of her youth was robbed, even though she did it to herself.

She had to have been going to Rack before she be-ratted herself. Because when Willow brought her back, she already knew him.

Also, she only thought she was a rat for a few weeks, remember? She didn't know that she had been in that cage for 3 years.
 
I was kinda shocked to see Amy change into the witch that she did. I thought that after what her mother put her through, and her mother's magic, that Amy wouldn't do that. Personally, I really dislike her as a character. I wanted her to die. Admittedly, that may be a little extreme.
 
Interesting topic, I think Amy knew of alot of magic before she became a rat. Also that it took quite a bit of magic for her to turn into a rat. But I don't think she was a junkie before becoming a rat
