An argument against recycling

Hmm...that's never come up. I don't think I have any bags from an actual grocery store. And there's really only one in my town that is half-decent. But I guess they should be happy you're giving them your money instead of the other guy lol

Well, I go to three different friggin groceries and they are all trying to sell me THEIR own bags. I'd need at least 5 bags. So buying 15 seems crazy!

You could always buy non supermarket ones! Many charities also do them, so you could get one of them instead and I doubt anyone would complain

I don't want to buy a grocery one period! But you get another discount off your groceries if you use their bags. So not only would I have my grocery card and get a discount but a discount from using their bags

We have a limit of two bags of garbage per week (with a charge of $1 for each extra bag) except for some designated times like after Christmas, Victoria Day and Labour day but we have unlimited free recycling. Our local park has garbage and recycling 55-gallon drum containers, but it's all a scam - everything goes into the same truck from both containers so it doesn't matter which you use. If you ask the people cleaning out the parks why recycling is going in with the garbage, you gat a two-word reply: contaminated load. We also have separate food waste green bins and garden waste goes in large 4-foot tall paper bags. Things are quite complicated here in the Mississauga/Toronto area.

As for store bags, some places give them away and some charge five cents each. Since I walk the dog and pick up after him, we save the free bags. The large permanent bags are available including some that are insulated for carrying meat and dairy products. I have no problem walking into a store with another store's large semi-permanent bag - in fact it makes sure I don't get charged for the store bag since they could assume I had just bought one of theirs but not one from a different store.

I recycle out of habit. There's always been a recycle bin as well as a trash bin from the city where I live so I've never put much though into why I do it.

Is composting more usual than recycling in terms of helping the environment and using less space for garbage? Seattle seems to get a lot out of it.

Odd fact: my very first "job" was to go into my dads work and collect their recyclables (cans and bottles) and take them to the recycling center. I was in 5th grade and got between $30-50 a week.

The plastic bag charge has only just started in England, whereas it's been going on a while in Scotland.

No I can see that, but then I just don't think in theory that people should be charged for something like a bag, its almost like a punishment for forgetting which some people just do because of other things. Even give someone a bag or don't but I don't think it should cost anything.

Here, in some states, supermarkets have just started charging for plastics bags, too; not in my state though. They offer cardboard boxes, too, but I prefer plastic bags because I use them to discard the garbage - instead of buying... plastic garbage bags sold at supermarkets.

And I don't drive – when I go to the supermarket, I walk there, so it's not always that I can (or want) to fill my purse with reusable bags, and I can't carry boxes (when I buy just a few things and don't get a taxi) in the way out.

Now, Brazilians love cars as much as Americans love guns – and they drive (with their brand new cars payable in very long installments) everywhere when they could go on foot or take a bus. Now, cars are a big problem in the cities, and the amount of pollution they cause, the problems to the environment are far worse than use and reuse plastic bags, IMO.

But I believe - and that's just me, not an "official" opinion - that Brazilian love for cars is a sick love! We buy cars that we can't afford - instead of paying private schools for our children, or helth ensurance, for instance (and then complain about public services a lot). The amount of people who die in car accidents is just absurd - a Vietnam War per year, as we use to say. And the traffic is becoming worst every year - but God forbid to suggest that people should leave their cars home and take public transportation (or taxis)! And public transportations work in some places, but not everywhere, because politicians are, after all, Brazilians, and as they love cars, they don't give a crap to buses and taxis.
