I wasn't sure what forum to put this in, so apologies in advance to the mods if this has to be moved.
I posted this on Live Journal on Tuesday. Thought I'd share it here, too.

Dear Fandom,
Today was a pretty awful workday for me. As some of you know, I work for a non-profit that assists at-risk young adults with their education and employment goals.
Today we found out that one of our clients had been murdered in a very brutal and senseless manner by two of his friends. He was only 15 years-old.
Needless to say, I was pretty shocked. I could nothing but go home. And what did I do? Immediately, I went online, logged in to LJ and read some fic. This was not a conscious decision. It seemed like a vital one, though.
It was then, after I'd calmed down, that I realized something; fandom is my sanctuary. Buffy, my friends online - you keep me sane. This is where I go when I'm angry, or stressed, or need to be distracted from the harsh realities of the world around me.
And for that I thank you all. I am forever grateful for this fandom, and for all the amazing and creative output you all graciously allow me to consume. You have no idea how much this fandom and all of you mean to me.
