Andrew: Is Joss Whedon making fun of us?

Do you ever get the idea that Andrew, and to a lesser extent Jonathan, are based on the way Whedon sees his fans? Does he see us as fanboys and geeks? Are you offended? I am referring specifically to their pop cultural references etc.
 
I think they're stereotypical geeks, but adorable with it, and Joss' work fits into that geeky sphere...so if anything I'd say he's poking fun at the genre.
 
I think Joss Whedon and the writers have genuine respect for the fans. I saw on one of the special features that they had so much fun writing the geeks because they basically got to write themselves.

Well him and his writers sure have an awful lot of knowledge about geek culture to be mocking it. Andrew was pretty over the top nerdy but I highly doubt it was a dig at his fans.
 
I didn't see them as disrespectful representations of 'us' as such but they certainly don't paint a good portrait of geeks in general.

The writers of Supernatural however, there's some folks who know how to insult their fans.

Yeah, I think a lot of the stuff said on supernatural is pretty jerkish towards the fans.

wow, glad I've never even seen supernatural now, and I was going to give it a shot. thanks for the heads up!
Joss did say that Xander's character is based on him. So it could be that those other geeks are also his mirror to himself. I'm not too convinced though.

Not sure I understand what you mean by that...

I doubt Joss was making fun of us by that... And even if he had been, I wouldn't mind. I'd love to be as much a nerd as Andrew XD
 
I thought the Supernatural episode 'The Real Ghostbusters' was totally disrespectful to the fans of the show in a 'this is how we see you' kind of way. I love the show but I felt massively insulted by that particular episode.

You mean the Ghostfacers? I don't know, it was funny to me. I just don't see the disrespect in there... But maybe that's just me..
 
Why would it be?

Buffy was based on parodying* a stock American film stereotype of the small blonde girl meeting vampires, etc. He also used the Valleygirl stereotype for Cordelia, the geeky one for Willow and don't even get me started on the OTT Britishness of Giles. The nerds were just a continuation of that really.

*perhaps not the right word but I couldn't think of a better one

I would say he is definitely taking the mick out of us and himself, but wouldn't be offended, feels more like an inside joke, that we're all in on.
 
I think Joss himself is a geek, just like us Buffy lovers, so i dont think he's making fun of us at all.

If I were to say I was offended about anything it would be that I was offended that the 'trio' became major characters, as they suck all the light out of BtVS, and undermine everything great about the show. That offended me. Although in saying that, I did enjoy Jonathan's running cameos in BtVS.

True it can be said that a bit of silliness is exactly what BtVS needs at times, but to make an entire season based on essentially a joke, demonstrated a severe lack of storytelling judgement IMHO.
 
For me the trio was more of a representation of the writers and their goofiness as people, Andrew included, I've mentioned it before and sadly don't remember which commentary it was but I do believe that one of the writers mention that they were (it was one of the season 6 commentaries, I will have to watch again and see if I can find it)

So no, I don't think Joss was making fun of the fans at all. I think he was rather fond of Andrew if anything.
